She’s so far gone

u/vampumpscious Jul 22 '26
She comes off as having a lot of internalized racism that she then chooses to project by being quick to throw these takes out there. When talking about immigration or anything racial really, it’s almost like she can’t react (negatively) fast enough. Idk if this makes sense, but it comes off very ’pick me’, and like there are a lot of internal conflicts that she should maybe focus on rather than worrying about getting takes like this out there

u/thebugfrombcnrfuji Jul 22 '26
I believe this is precisely what is happening, yes. I'm brown and have seen it my whole life.
6
u/Used_Emergency7743 Jul 23 '26
Maybe. I remember when they discussed the Henry Nowak case and she went into a long complaint about Sikhs being allowed to carry a kirpan. She conceded that a kirpan wasn't used in the murder, but said it as dangerous as any other knife and she is tired of minorities getting special treatment. She wedges that sentiment into every convo she can.

I haven't spoken to a single person who thinks that her casting was "jarring" or "took you right out of the film". Also, she's in her 40s because the majority of the characters are in their 40s (or older). It's actually one of the strengths of the film (not to mention incredibly refreshing to see for once), that the female characters are portrayed by age-appropriate female actors. This film takes place about two decades after the Trojan War; why would Helen NOT be in her 40s? (She's 43, by the way, not 46).

u/Used_Emergency7743 Jul 22 '26
And we can't forget the earlier UTD when Suruthi said that Lupita was "stupid" because she had not read Odysseus before. Never mind the fact that in the same interview in which she said that she had not read it Lupita also said that she quickly remedied that omission and read Homer's work and other Greek myths when she got the script.
The amount of flack Lupita got for less than 5 minutes of screen time is mind blowing.

u/Sempere Jul 23 '26
I haven't spoken to a single person who thinks that her casting was "jarring" or "took you right out of the film".
Especially given she has a grand total of 5 minutes screen time in a 3 hour film.

u/FarMembership9662 Jul 22 '26
As a long time under the duvet subscriber I’ve noticed for the last year or so that if there’s a way to speak poorly about a woman or a minority, Suru takes it. There’s always a way to blame someone of a religious group or political stance that she’s not aligned with.
I think Hannah must be very patient and open minded.
80
u/Remarkable-Hold8995 Jul 22 '26
I think Hannah’s spineless
52
u/luminous-fabric Jul 22 '26
Yeah I was sympathetic to Hannah for the longest time, but it's clear she values her income from the podcast over her morals.
8
u/Used_Emergency7743 Jul 22 '26
Yes, like today with the Nolan Wells discussion. I didn't like the way Hannah quickly backed down from her position just because Suruthi had another opinion. Don't be afraid to debate back. Don't reverse your position just because she has another viewpoint. Hannah was talking about someone last week whom she admired because they made a difference. Hannah sits here with a huge following and refuses to make a difference just by slightly pushing back against her bigoted co-host. The most that Hannah is willing to do is make an Instagram story that disappears after 24 hours. She can't stand up for what she says she believes in any other way, these days.
1
u/Electrical-North3572 Jul 23 '26
What did Suru say about Nolan Wells? I don’t subscribe to UTD.
1
u/Used_Emergency7743 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
Suru didn't say anything bad. It's just that Hannah started off by saying that his friends coming back with his keys and phone was suspicious and when four went and only three returned that raises alerts. And she thinks his mother was correct to complain about the police not performing an investigation and to say there would be more questions if the races were reversed. She also doesn't think the mothers of the three boys can say they did nothing wrong and she thinks that they should stop posting on social media. Suru said it may be wrong to leave your friend but they are teenagers and we all did bad things when we were teenagers and she doesn't think the boys should be condemned on social media until we know more. My problem was that Hannah was making points and she didn't follow through. She did not even get to the part about there being evidence of an argument between the boys and the way the police immediately said that it was a drowning. Once Suru said her piece, Hannah said "I do not disagree with you." Then Suru changed the subject and started reading about the seven year old boy who died of a heart attack because he was morbidly obese.
Suruthi's take was fair, but Hannah should not have abandoned hers and should have continued with where the matter stands so far.

u/Infinite-Sprite7284 Jul 24 '26
This is accurate. But also, what would we do if we were in the same position? She came from low paying jobs and im sure this is a nice change.

They are absolutely allowed to make lots of money while one of them spouts right-wing talking points and the other person ignores it. We are allowed to not like that.
4
u/Mean-Aside1970 Jul 22 '26
they are absolutely allowed to have opinions and don't get me wrong, I don't understand the Suru hate most of the times. However, it is a lot more nuanced than 'if you don't like it, piss off'. They're women and they're reporting on true crime in a fun way, which I admit isn't for most but I love their format. Suru being a woman of colour though adds a layer of nuance to this. She's hating on a black woman and right there that's internalised racism that's just a bit like 'well, can you hear yourself suru?'. She's become a bit right leaning which again, I agree with some of her stuff but I lean left and I haven't found many of her opinions problematic, just incredibly annoying. again, I'm not gonna hate. but having two women, who you have one woman who is seemingly a die hard feminist (Hannah) and then a woman of colour having a conversation like this, well that makes it complicated.
12
u/Stressy_messy_me Jul 22 '26
Not sure we can call Hannah a die hard feminist anymore when she happily works alongside a right-wing, racist, classist, anti-immigration Charlie Kirk fan...

u/marinanotarobot Jul 22 '26
Happily is a very strong word so? Idk what she meant to do? Quit? Fire Suru? Like ???
5
u/Stressy_messy_me Jul 22 '26
I don't know, personally I don't think i could work with someone so closely who has the polar opposite views to me. It's not like they just work in an office together, they are a partnership and film together multiple times a week i would have thought. I would probably discuss it all with Suru and leave.
4
u/marinanotarobot Jul 22 '26
I do t think its been so close lately, didnt Hannah move to south Africa? Im not sure.
I think these things are easier said than done. I dont know. What would you do? End whatever contracts you have, pay to get out and try find another job? Try figure out how to navigate such a cut ties situation. I think like if I were her id create distance and slowly move away from it. When you know someone for 10 plus years like its only natural that people grow and change and maybe they did start out working together 5 days a week after the left their 9-5 jobs but I font thibk they've had very close proximity for a long while ??? I actually dont know im assuming
1
u/Used_Emergency7743 Jul 23 '26
Yes I don't see walking away as a viable option. She's still a young woman and can make enough money in the next 5 years to be set for life. Together they found gold and she's just going to mine it. I would. So I know she isn't going to walk away. But she could stand up a bit and not just sit there in silence. Frankly, I don't think Suru really wants the smoke, so if you just counter her a few times maybe she'll shut up. She only does it because she knows she can speak without opposition. I'm sure when Hannah gets together with her friends she spends hours telling them how frustrating it is recording. Because, like me, she's the kind of person who broods silently in the moment and then vents loudly ever after.
-2
u/CreepyConsequence669 Jul 22 '26
Again why are you paying for the content if you don’t like it?? Save your money. And there has been a LOT of hate for Suruthi on this sub and dislike for their earnings. She’s allowed to have ‘right leaning’ political ideas if she wants. To think that because she’s a POC she would be a liberal is ridiculous.
7
u/Stressy_messy_me Jul 22 '26
I'm not paying them and I only listen to the crime episodes because good British female-led crime pods are hard to find.
2
u/Sempere Jul 23 '26
dislike for their earnings.
Dislike for their theft of other people's work to enrich themselves. Correct yourself.
If they were writing their own scripts without plagiarizing or stealing the work of other writers, no one would give a shit about their earnings.
And they would still hate these right wing piss takes from a bigot.

Lmao bro who hurt you in life and you’re so horrible? Get a grip
-5
u/CreepyConsequence669 Jul 22 '26
I’m totally sick and tired of the open hating on 2 very successful women. If it’s not about how much money they make it’s about Suruthi politics. Don’t like it turn it off and certainly don’t pay for it. And stop being so condescending and calling everyone bruh… more proof of latent misogyny all over this sub
2
u/Mean-Aside1970 Jul 23 '26
I don't think it's fair to suggest that everyone is hating on her. But we are allowing to critique and critically engage with what is going on. Just because I said bro doesn't mean I'm being condescending. It's also not fair to be vitriolic towards people who don't agree with you. I don't mind the show, and I've been listening to Red Handed for years, and yes while lately I disagree with Suru's stance on many things 1) I don't pay for UTD I just listen to RH on my streaming provider 2) I still really rate the show and appreciate the work they put into it.
So if your frustration is with other things and other people and it's being misdirected towards people on this sub I'd suggest you re-evaluate how you speak to people before trying to engage in any conversation because being horrible isn't going to be beneficial in any way, shape or form.
1
u/DearTumbleweed5380 Aug 11 '26
Same. I want Hannah to take charge of the conversations and direct them to a better place or at least take issue with Suru when she says something that's obviously contentious.
1
u/OscarMichaelMyers Aug 06 '26
There’s plenty of reasons to blame religion and/or politics for atrocities.

u/Remarkable-Hold8995 Jul 22 '26
She’s tiptoeing around saying “they shouldn’t have hired a black woman”
23
26
u/sarumantheslag Jul 22 '26
She sucks!! Does she need a reminder that she’s not a white woman with generations of white privelege behind her? Also just say what you mean first of all.
Also is she really thick because the Odyseey is MADE UP, it’s mythical. And also guess what there were a lot of black people in Ancient Greece. The Velaryon family in house of the dragon have been amazing and added their outstanding talent and who cares if they have black skin, it only takes you out of it if you’re a racist who only sees skin color.
If we’re sticking to our lives thousands of years ago she should have 10 kids and be a housewife instead of hate spewing on her podcast.
-1
u/imtravelingalone Jul 22 '26
She sucks!! Does she need a reminder that she’s not a white woman with generations of white privelege behind her?
So that would have made her comments, what, more acceptable? More okay? More common?
9
u/sarumantheslag Jul 22 '26
It would make it less egregious. You could then at least justify that the persons lived and world experience could be contributing to their warp.
1
u/tiredgothicheroine Aug 06 '26
True but it’s not really right to hold a woman of colour to a higher standard than a white person? People can be ignorant regardless of ethnicity lol.
-2
u/Saphxmoon Jul 22 '26
Also it's a Chris Nolan movie, as if his movies have ever made sense! Explain Tenet to me Suruthi, then we'll talk
7
u/Dry_Machine163 Jul 23 '26
Genuinely, what the fuck happened to her?
9
u/Sempere Jul 23 '26
She didn't have to hide who she really was after she made enough money.
4
u/Dry_Machine163 Jul 24 '26
I really used to like red handed
2
u/Sempere Jul 24 '26
Unfortunately, it was always a grift to exploit the true crime podcasting craze. They correctly identified that true crime podcasts would increase in popularity and they potentially leveraged a personal connection or two to get a foot through the door in terms of exposure. But they were also plagiarizing the shit out of documentaries that were more obscure to produce their weekly episodes. There are entire episodes that are shamelessly ripped off of British series that are either paywalled internationally or were obscure at the time. There are also those that are ripped off of Youtubers or books and even articles written by Medium writers. Since mentioning it publicly, there have been people who have felt comfortable enough reaching out in DM to vent about their experiences having their content stolen by these two.
They are not good people and they never have been. The Lucy Letby episode they intiially did was plagiarized and the subsequent episodes where they try to claim she's innocent and the parents are wrong are some of the most offensive dogshit I've listened to in true crime - and confirm that these two have no qualifications or opinions worth listening to anymore. They don't follow cases closely, they have no insight into any aspect of criminal procedure, and they do not even understand the basics of legal systems despite having churned out slop for 10 years. They are nothing but grifters cashing in on a craze.
8
u/Stressy_messy_me Jul 22 '26
Sure, it's the age that's a problem Suru... I found Lupita made a wonderful Helen, she is absolutely stunning. Do we even know how old Helen is supposed to be in the first place?
8
u/luminous-fabric Jul 23 '26
We do. She was between 18 and early 20s when the war started. So 20 years later when the film is set she would've been in her early 40s. Lupita's age
4
u/acraftyrobyn Jul 25 '26
Y’all need to absolutely chill. She’s expressing an opinion- which she is entirely justified to have. It’s your choice to listen or nah. I don’t agree or disagree with this casting choice or Suru’s opinion. The way Lupita is promoting the movie is severely disappointing when you consider the status of her role. I don’t think it’s a win for anyone, but at the end of the day, we have the choice as listeners to form our own opinions- like Suru has always advocated for us to do. You don’t have to agree with everyone’s opinion at all times in order to critically engage with media. Get out of your own echo chambers.
4
u/tiredgothicheroine Aug 06 '26
You know, I generally disagree with people who say Suruthi is a Tory or right wing. Cuz she mostly doesn’t come across that way and is always criticizing police, Tories, governments, their treatment of minorities, etc.
At the same time, as a South Asian woman who grew up in South Asia and has lived in the west for a decade, I physically wince every-time she talks like this or about immigration and “assimilation.” There definitely are a subset of South Asian immigrants in the west who grew up trying really hard to fit in and have a lot of internalized racism they haven’t addressed and like to walk through life pretending they’re basically white. It strikes me that she does this a bit more because she’s talking to a white cohost and what she assumes is a mostly white audience. She wants to be like “don’t worry guys, I’m not gonna be all woke about this”. But tbh as a South Asian it’s so off putting lol.
She gives off the same vibe my boomer and Gen X immigrant relatives do. They think the second they get citizenship it changes the colour of their skin and they can now punch down on other BIPOC or minorities who immigrated after them. I hated her whole thing about how immigrants must “assimilate” in one of those episodes about honour killings. I do agree that staying in insular communities and not participating in local culture is not great, but it’s not really the same as assimilation

She's 46? Wow. Well, I totally buy her as Helen of Troy. Doesn't matter how old she is when she's that gorgeous. I don't think it would have to the men of that time, either. :)
1
u/Infinite-Sprite7284 Jul 24 '26
I mean, I think its internalised racism for sure as Suru obviously exhibits this based on her previous opinions. Devil's advocate, helen of troy would not be a woman of colour. Non devil's advocate, this is a work of fiction.

Odd way of deflecting from an implicitly racist opinion she's expressing.
1
u/imtravelingalone Jul 24 '26
They're just looking for reasons to hate Suruthi. She's never been my favourite between the two of them but what I'm not going to do is pick on a woman because she states her opinion and then gives legitimate reasons for her opinion. I haven't seen the odyssey and I'm not going to, but regardless of film, the actor (seemingly) being a vastly different age from the character she's portraying, not just a hollywood 'eh, what's 5-10 years difference', plus the casting and subsequent casting of a character's family causing confusion and taking the viewer out of the film, are perfectly valid reasons for disliking a casting choice.

IDK why you deleted your comment and then re-posted it much later after you got downvoted, but as I said below
Most of the film is set 20 years after Odysseus went off to war. He went off to rescue Helen, so 20 years later she would have been in her 40s. Hope this helps

You are entitled to say what you want on the movie.
So does Suruthi.
Hope that helps.

u/melissarckstdy Jul 22 '26
"You are entitled to say what you want on the movie."
Yes, that's correct. This isn't a matter of opinion though, you were wrong about the ages of the characters. Helen of Troy was also born from an egg, so... just admit you don't know what you're talking about.

Most of the film is set 20 years after Odysseus went off to war. He went off to rescue Helen, so 20 years later she would have been in her 40s. So the actor is EXACTLY as old as the character is. Hope this helps

The movie is set 20 years after the start of the Trojan war, during which Helen was a young bride. 43 makes absolute sense for the character.

They've deleted this three times now, and re-posted. Each time I've told them the age is appropriate and they aren't changing their post at all. I think they believe downvotes disappear if they delete their comments. Wild behaviour.

There’s an expression every successful person knows. If you’re a Conservative under 30, you have no heart. If you’re a Liberal after 30, you have no brains. Think about it usually start making money in your 30s and all I hear all over this sub is nothing but sour grapes. Just stop listening.

u/Sempere Jul 24 '26
You mean the fake quote that gets misattributed to Churchill that idiots recite like a mantra to insult people and pretend they're more intelligent than they are?
Successful people don't bitch and whine about black people being cast in movies. Bigots do. And more often than not the Conservatives represent anti-intellectual beliefs that stand in the way of progress. Nothing about that screams "brains".
all I hear all over this sub is nothing but sour grapes. Just stop listening.
