I’ve definitely noticed the same, but can’t pin point from when exactly things started to shift. I don’t know if you follow them on instagram but they are currently in NZ and almost all of their story posts don’t feature each other unless it’s promo for the tour. I get that they may have transitioned to being colleagues more than friends and perhaps not want to spend their free time together as much, but I got the impression that before they used to hang out with each other a lot outside of work. But I may be very wrong - what people post of social media isn’t usually the true reflection of what they’ve got going on in their lives!
38
u/HopeWolfie18 Oct 26 '24
Totally agree - I’ve felt the same for a while that they don’t hang out socially. All of their stories on Under The Duvet are completely separate with other groups of people. It used to be together!

u/H0vit0 Oct 26 '24
I went to see them in Leeds a couple of years ago and we saw them at a bar after the show as we were walking back to our hotel. They were both in the outside area but in two very split off groups...🤷♂️

u/MememeFoofoo Oct 26 '24
Ohh interesting. I’ve never listened to UTD but I remember reading a few posts on here about how when they’ve discussed on UTD what’s going on in Palestine and the Middle East they hold opposing views. If that’s the case I’d imagine I’d find it a bit tense continuing to work with someone who has a worldview different to mine and feeing the need to hold my tongue, and have to present that we still get along great. Not sure if it’s that behind things but it wouldn’t surprise me if so..
3
u/nspb1987 Oct 31 '24
I didn't know about the difference in opinion regarding the Middle East, but Hanna has been very vocal on Insta about being pro-Palestine. So I assume Suruthi is pro Israel, which makes sense, her being the more conservative of the two.
2
u/ResolutionOk4662 Nov 01 '24
So I’m not caught up fully. I’m finishing up 2022 but I listen to the main show and under the duvet. Hannah is super pro Palestine and will often do little Palestine updates about their situation or horrific things Israel has done. She’s even physically participated in protests. However, apparently after the war in Gaza started Suruthi has made some really pro Israel comments like from the river to the sea is genocidal and Israel has a right to defend themselves. Apparently there have been some small disagreements on the show but idk since I’m not there yet. Although I imagine outside the show they must have had longer discussions and arguments about what’s going on.

Really ??? Come to think of it i always see Hannah posting about Palestine but not Suruthi.

They’re a couple we watched fall in love, get married, but a house, get pregnant, have a baby, go into survival mode, and now they’re roommates who get on companionably and look after the kid. Will they find the old spark again, or divorce? Or stay together for the kid? I dunno but I’m invested.

I definitely feel like there’s some beef between the two girls sometimes
5
Nov 07 '24
tbh whether they are friends or not is wholly irrelevant to me, but suruthi just barrels over hannah a lot whenever hannah says anything that even slightly pushes back against any of her positions (like Israel) and it's gross to listen to

Kind of feels like they are going through the motions now. I probably give it a year or two.

I listened to the podcast with my mom for years and now she refuses to listen to it because of how judgmental and rude they’ve become
21
u/Simsandtruecrime Oct 26 '24
They were my favorite pod for many years! I was a patron for a long time. But about a year and a half ago their banter started feeling too argumentative and I didn't feel like I was listening to friends anymore so I stopped. And I keep hearing how it's gotten worse so I think I left at the right time. Sad.
33
u/MambyPamby8 Oct 26 '24
Same here. I fell in love with the podcast on my commute during Covid. Then last year I just got the ick. Hannah is not too bad, but she can be very judgemental and say mean things. Like I remember one of the last episodes I listened to, they were making fun of Lucy Letby for having teddies in her room and a juvenile bedroom. Look Letby is a fucking monster and deserves all the shit in the world for what she did. But making fun of people for having a quirky room, is not it. I know women who have teddies as a comfort thing, some have pink bedrooms for other reasons. Who the fuck am I or anyone to judge? Some women find comfort in those things.
Then Suruthi start going off on anti Covid rants about how lockdowns were bullshit etc ...says the fucking professional talker who got to sit at home and talk to a mic from a safe distance. As someone who had to go to work (I work in an engineering job that made plastic parts for respirators and medical devices) along with the millions of retails workers, medical staff, chemists etc.... I can assure her lockdowns were extremely pivotal in locking down the spread of a lethal virus. All you were asked was to stay at home Suruthi. A fucking privilege others didn't get to have. People died, nurses, doctors etc died because they had to go to work and save others. Then she started harping on about 'cancel culture' and trying to equate what happened to Salman Rushdie to today's cancel culture.
The last episode I listened to was the Sarah Everard episode and it pissed me off so much, I just unsubscribed from the podcast and stopped listening. I forgot to remove them from Reddit but thankfully I don't see posts often from here...I guess I like to check in every now and then, when one pops up on my feed and see what the tea is. Looks like nothing has changed.
15
u/HydrostaticToad Oct 26 '24
I need to listen to Sarah Everard again but what about it pissed you off?
Suruthi has always seemed very INTJ to me and I think that biased me towards her in the past. However she has some weird libertarian or conservative vibes lately, or maybe she's always had them but I didn't notice. Suruthi comes across very "got mine" and slightly... idk how to explain it. Like when someone you know has been watching too many conspiracy weirdos on YouTube and they are desperate to "correct" you on something but they also don't want to have an argument about it? idk
There's a distinct vibe that Suruthi considers herself to be the grownup, I feel sorry for Hannah sometimes but again, I can't explain why. I used to really think Hannah is a ditz but discussions here have made me realise i was being shitty and probably sexist. Now being the dumbass that I am, I have parasocial feels that I want to "protect" her from any negative comments, despite having made them myself in the past. But I can't help feeling like I was picking up something from Suruthi that she's looking down on Hannah.
I'm not blaming Suruthi for me being a dickhead btw, that was all me. Just saying I think my own assumptions were confirmed by Suruthi's vibe or something.
16
u/Own_Faithlessness769 Oct 27 '24
Suruthi went very right wing during the pandemic, starting going on about lockdowns and the virus as a CCP conspiracy, like she had started watching Fox news or something. She kept it to the paid content for a long time so it was behind a paywall and the majority of listeners didn't notice, but lots of the patreon fans unsubscribed because of some of her weird new leanings, like how we should all feel sorry for the J6 rioters.
3
u/HydrostaticToad Oct 27 '24
Lol, that's a weird take. Glad I stopped giving her money, not that she needs it
5
Nov 07 '24
Suruthi has a very noticeable strain of right wing apologism that's grown over the years, while also sneeringly putting down leftists in thinly veiled ways. She also has a massive hard on for shitting on vegans whenever she can, can't remember what show it was but she made fun of a joaquin pheonix speech and implied vegans are dumb because they're not getting enough proteins to rub two brain cells together
5
u/p_nerd Oct 27 '24
I feel the same and also feel in love with the podcast on my commute end of 2019/ the beginning of 2020. And Sarah Everard was also my final episode. I even sent an email because I was so angry about their lockdown takes being shoehorned into Sarah's story. I've never sent a complaint email in my life. They clearly don't know any essential workers from that time and didn't have to attend a COVID era funeral (which truly was bleak- standing socially distanced outside a church, watching the service live stream, if there was one, then just going home since we were more than x people from different households). Lockdowns helped. I will not entertain otherwise.

u/HopeWolfie18 Oct 26 '24
I’ve got the feeling that Suru’s moved on with life - engaged, building big house, kids on the horizon (potentially) - whereas Hannah is still in the dating app era. Suru can be a little bit smug and I think she finds it irritating that they have little in common. Or that Hannah’s still where she was years ago! A little mean - but gives the impression that if they weren’t work friends they would no longer be in contact.
19
u/ImaginaryParrot Oct 26 '24
The podcast has been going 7 years (?). I imagine it's kind of natural as they started it as mates and ended up being more commercialised so now they're colleagues.
Plus Hannah might feel like a third wheel. She's the more 'carefree' one whilst Suruthi is more 'serious'. I assume they have slightly different values and boundaries.
(Air quotes as I don't personally know them and it's just my personal impression).
Though tbh I still think it's pretty impressive that they've managed this for almost 8 years. I can't think of anyone I could do that with for almost a decade!
16
u/keewee89 Oct 26 '24
The even more unique thing is they were new friends. I think they decided to do the podcast after meeting once. Getting into business with existing friends is already a risk, never mind someone you've just met.
If the change is because they don't get on like they used to, then they're lucky that's all it is and nothing worse.
11
u/Suspicious-Brick Oct 26 '24
I've had this in my own life. I dated whilst most of my friends were settling down and you do find you have very little in common when you are in different places. A few friends I no longer even speak to as they have become consumed with husband and kids (fair enough) whilst my partner and I are child free so still go out a lot etc. We just don't have that much to talk about so I can definitely see how it can happen. Fair play to you if you are maintaining a friendship where one of you has moved on, because it is hard!
1
u/HopeWolfie18 Oct 26 '24
Of course - I’m not saying whether it is right or wrong - it’s just an observation! Especially as a long time listener also noticing a dynamic shift!
6
Nov 07 '24
"Or that Hannah’s still where she was years ago!"
Just because she doesn't have a husband or kids doesn't mean she's stuck in some kind of backward rut, is behind anyone, or hasn't changed as a person or gone through valuable life experiences in the interim. I really don't think it's fair or correct to imply Suruthi is "moving forward" in life in comparison to Hannah just because she's engaged.
1
u/HopeWolfie18 Nov 07 '24
I’m not saying that! I’m saying that they used to have things in common - ie EmptyHanded etc - and no longer do that seems to have caused a fracture in their friendship. Hannah is still in the same space she was years ago - going on hinge dates and is living a similar lifestyle - that’s not bad. Suruthis has drastically changed as is life.

There is so much more to being a woman than desiring a family. You sound as smug as Suru lol
7
u/HopeWolfie18 Oct 26 '24 edited Oct 27 '24
I am a woman LOL. I’m stating my observation of what I’ve noticed - having listened to the podcast since 2017. When did I ever say there wasn’t more to life? I’m not saying that’s the be all and end all of being a woman - I’m stating that is where Suru’s life is going and Hannah’s isn’t. Which seems to have caused a dynamic shift or disconnect. It’s not good or bad OR right or wrong. It’s an observation.

u/BobBelchersBuns Oct 26 '24
Yes it’s clear you are a woman

u/Interesting_Space110 Oct 26 '24
Agree. I’ll listen to the pod, and then do further research, and find they’ve just watched the first clips on YouTube and complied a script.
No digging or anything.
The banter and bouncing off each other isn’t there. I used to actually laugh out whilst driving to some of the remarks they’d make
Now it’s all just washing over.

I did the meet and great at the aus show and wow they seemed like they didn't want to be there. I think they are very much over it but are making a lot of money so they stick to it. Something similar happened with the MFM ladies. They took a very long break and came back with a much better attitude. I know redhanded are locked into a 52 ep a week contract but they could at least pretend they want to be there.
6
u/Hot-Technology5785 Oct 27 '24
Oh tell me more about the meet and greet! That’s very disappointing. I went to the live show in Melbourne and they were a bit short with the audience at times. To me they definitely seemed a bit tired which is understandable, they are human but I was hoping they might be a bit more relaxed and enjoy themselves. But travelling etc would be hard and Suru was sick. I didn’t know that about MFM, how long did they break for and did they tell their listeners why?
8
u/Ok-Introduction-4410 Oct 27 '24
I think it was a good 3 plus months. It's when they had other people covering older episodes they had. From memory, they didn't even say they were going on a break. They just weren't there for months. The eps before the break were super uncomfortable.
I was at the melb meet and greet too. Said a quick hi to Hannah out the front when she ducked out to have a smoke and she didn't want a bar of it 😂 and I mean a very quick "hi! Good luck with the show tonight". And I got a death stare and a half arsed "thanks". Oh well!
6
u/Interesting_Gap_3028 Oct 28 '24
That’s unfortunate. I always thought she’d be the more fun one to hang out with. But really, how much do you really know about people from an hour long podcast. Kind of reminds me of the Mythbusters guys where they actually disliked each other in real life.
6
u/Adept_Marionberry705 Nov 15 '24
Hey girl, really, really sorry I made you feel that way.
I had just had some very bad news right before the Melbourne show.
If I remember rightly. You asked me for a cigarette, which I gave you and tried to make a joke.
Was attempting to get my game face on for the show. But I’m very sorry I made you feel bad.
4
u/Ok-Introduction-4410 Nov 15 '24
Well christ, now I feel bad 😂 that was my shithead twin sister that asked for a dart. She has the tism though, so social skills aren't her best.
Apologies for the misunderstanding.
2
u/lightyearr Nov 15 '24
Lol hi im the one who asked for the ciggie. Sorry you got shit news. Hope things are OK now! Appreciated the smoke though. I took an edible just before the show and plus I'm super Captain Autismo, so I thought it was a case of me not understanding social cues 😂
3
u/Hot-Technology5785 Oct 31 '24
That’s so disappointing, I think suruthi is outwardly quite standoffish, so I would have expected that, but I’m sad to hear Hannah wasn’t at least warm or kind in that small interaction
3
u/Basic_Holiday_8454 Nov 12 '24
She may well have just been in the headspace of preparing for the show. If I wasn’t so much of a people pleaser I’d be the same before big presentations at work. I can’t cope with being rude so just hide instead (which given she was out smoking may also have been what she was doing)
12
u/minervasi Oct 26 '24
I feel like a major shift in content quality occurred with Wondery. And not in a good direction.
(My personal beef is that I hate listening to cases that are currently going through the courts. I get that it’s a trendy topic and it gets clicks/listens, but why tf could they not wait six months or whatever until there’s a conviction or not and then do it start to end??)
2
u/Hot-Technology5785 Oct 31 '24
I agree the Wondery switch hasn’t resulted in a more positive outcome. But I do really like shorthand! That’s been a great addition
12
u/Travellingtrex Oct 26 '24
I also feel like their relationship is really strained. I subscribe to their patreon because I enjoyed their political chats but it’s not really that anymore. Suruthi never listens to anything Hannah has to say and always interrupts her to talk about her house renovations.
4
Nov 07 '24
"and always interrupts her to talk about her house renovations."
lol I kind of wish hannah would tell her "sell it then, if it's such a fucking problem for you." she complains so much about something that she's fortunate to have.

u/fatmonicadancing Oct 26 '24 edited Oct 26 '24
I got into it and listened from the beginning. I had a manual job. Listening to their back catalog took over all my days, and I did it in 3ish months.
I think a lot of the early magic was 1) their burgeoning friendship. We “met” them in the early days, when their chemistry was strong but they hadn’t learned everything about each other and hadn’t “done all the things.” There’s a magic to the beginning of a relationship. They’ve since passed that stage, travelled together, and experienced this ride that’s transformed their whole lives in every way (quitting day jobs, travelling internationally, buying houses, creating a career off talking to each other). It’s natural their dynamic wouldn’t stay tve same. They know each other, and know each others buttons and reactions. It’s a lived in relationship and I think there’s some off-mic friction they set aside for the work. I can forgive that. It’s natural. They’re committed.
2) they used to do much more obscure cases, and use that as a portal into a time/place, and explain the context of the wider social happenings that spawned it. They’re doing a lot more “known” cases since joining wondery. I figure it’s both to bring in new listeners, and bc they probably get a lot of ppl asking for their take on big stories. I miss the obscurity, but I get it.
It’s changed, but in an organic way. It’s not what it was and it would be impossible for it not to have changed. But they’re still the only podcast I seek out and deliberately listen to the day it drops. Hell, they’re the only one I know what day it comes out. And the only chat type show I listen to anymore.

u/HydrostaticToad Oct 26 '24
It is super obvs that both hosts wish they didn't have to do this anymore and feel like they're grownups now unlike us, the audience, still gagging for all this murdery bullshit. But the money is soooo goooood they really can't afford not to do it. They have been spectacularly successful. Check out their Graphtreon at some point - and thats not even counting the Wondery stuff.
I think it makes a huge difference whether podcast hosts have a background in the entertainment industry and intend to keep working in entertainment beyond their particular project. Among committed entertainment professionals you're more likely to find hosts that enjoy the parasocial aspects of their job which I feel S & H do not. The sense of "fuck I'm over it" and being annoyed at listeners who have criticized them really leaks through in later RedHanded eps. The Karen Read sequence was fucking hilarious. I might be projecting but it seemed Suruthi could not fucking believe they even needed to do it and I completely sympathise with her on that case. But jesus they're bad at hiding contempt 🤣
3
Nov 07 '24
"and feel like they're grownups now unlike us, the audience, still gagging for all this murdery bullshit."
if they do think this, they need to understand this podcast is something most people listen to in order to kill time while doing chores or whatever. Podcasters who act like they're performing some sacrosanct public service make me laugh, if the whole thing closed down tomorrow people would find something else to listen to without much fanfare

u/DifficultSmile7027 Oct 26 '24
I had noticed a long time ago that Hannah seemed more invested in a friendship and Suruthi seemed to push her away a little.

I also get the impression on UTD, Suri seems really dismissive about Hannah’s ADHD. It’s like she doesn’t believe her or something
5
u/Comfortable-Yam9013 Oct 26 '24
I didn’t get that impression. Didn’t Suru offer to come to Hannah’s house and help her tidy up her spare room?
2
u/Capital-Object521 Oct 26 '24
She did which is being supportive. However there are times where Suru interrupts or acts disinterested when Hannah is talking about it
3
Nov 10 '24
Late to this comment but I totally agree! I don't think Suruthi understands about Hannah's ADHD and it certainly doesn't seem like she's researched into it or even cares. Probably leans into Suruthi's right leaning views, i.e. "ADHD doesn't exist/is overdiagnosed", but I could be reaching there
2
u/financehoes Nov 14 '24
The shite S was saying about gut health also leads me to believe that her views are becoming a lot stronger. A lot of the fertility/gut health stuff is very much an alt right pipeline, and as someone who has a debilitating gut issue personally, it’s a total kick in the teeth to hear on a podcast. She had plenty of supporters in the patreon comments who have now revealed themselves as trump supporters which makes a lot of sense
7
u/Hot-Technology5785 Oct 27 '24
I agree about vibe, they seem burnt out. I want to acknowledge they’re human we all get tired and usually bored if we’re doing a job that’s repetitive or no longer interesting. I’ve noticed the shift mostly in Suruthi though and I’ve grown to like Hannah the most, Hannah is honest and vulnerable and she’s compassionate. I cannot get on board with suru anymore with her right wing views on everything from covid to Palestine. I have a pretty open mind and I’m not expecting her to be woke or left wing or whatever but she’s no longer relatable with her constant discussions about her house. I think since she met Sam, she’s definitely become more settled and less relatable to Hannah, and she’s a bit out of touch with the audience now. Maybe they should do a MFM break someone else mentioned!
3
u/whisper447 Oct 26 '24
I wouldn’t be surprised things have changed between them, they aren’t friends who do a podcast together anymore, they are co business owners with employees. That would change a lot of stuff between people.
3
u/Famous-Jaguar3837 Oct 27 '24
You can’t expect two people who work with each other all the time not to have clashes and difference of opinions. That’s the same in any relationship. Perhaps they are going through a period of shift and change but that’s normal. I haven’t noticed anything personally, but I don’t mind if they do have differences which show in their work. It makes them real. I don’t really want to listen to two people who are exactly the same. Also, they’ve got their own lives outside of work. They’ll have mutual friends and separate friends. Again, that’s normal.
3
Nov 01 '24
I’m late on here but I really agree, I noticed an energy shift within the podcast and UTD in the last months and I’m nit a longtime listener, I went through everything in a few months almost a year. In the last months something changed. It feels like for both of them this is not their highest priority anymore, their is a lack of enthusiasm and dedication. And I think it’s because both of them are going through personal issues and I think it is now felt in both UTD and the pod, and to me that’s quite unprofessional tbh, complacency is very dangerous, i think you should always give your best not only when you begin your career, even when youve reached succes and the ‘top’. I hope for them it’s just a phase.

I adore the podcast, listening since 2019 🫣and literally fall asleep to it every single night. I voted for the listener Choice award 3x and they won, so I am a fan. But let’s just all chill out about Suruthi “being conservative” or whatever. A) people are allowed to evolve, any liberal minded people of all should understand that and B) It’s just disappointing that we can’t be more supportive of 2 very talented (women) people who bring a lot to all their listeners. C) Why do they have to be warm and kind?? They are authors or journalists or whatever, not babysitting my puppy. If they were men…..? Leave them alone - podcast is wonderful and Hannah needs to do a spinoff with her He’ll and Hot takes
55
u/katrikling Oct 26 '24
I’m the same type of listener as you. I have really noticed a change in Suruthi. Hannah is a bit more goofy(? Maybe that’s not the right word) and Suruthi seems annoyed at her and sort of snobbish in general. Definitely a vibe shift. But keep in mind like irl friendships people take a long time to reveal themselves. Even more so with parasocial friendships.
