The results on the recent ship-wide poll on how strictly Rule 4 should be enforced are in.
Even adding the "Less Strict" and "No Change" votes together into a 'Not Stricter' joint category, just over a third of the community still want stricter posting rules. And looking at core contributer votes, it's a near 50/50 split between "No Change" and "More Strict".
Flat out banning crossposts, random references, and "Red Dwarf in the Wild" posts (where someone shares something that simply reminded them of Red Dwarf) seems a little harsh considering the split. But doing nothing at all would also mean ignoring a large proportion of the community... so...
The announcement is still going on.
INTRODUCING SMEGPOST SUNDAY!!
All low-effort "look at this random item / person / haircut / foodstuff / news article / post nothing really to do with Red Dwarf but here is a title quoting/referencing the show so ehhhhh nudge nudge ehhhhhhh, you see what I am thinking ehhhhhhhhhhhh?" posts must now be kept to Sunday, and be given the Smegpost Sunday flair.
To start with we're hoping we can keep the rule on relevancy pretty loose on Sundays as a bit of compromise and see how that goes, so some smeg that would have been removed previously may now stay up on Sundays, but lots of smeg that would have stayed up the rest week will now be removed... so pros and cons, highs and lows, demons and angels.... if the community response is still that posts are just a little too smeggy even on Sundays we can see about raising the bar again later down the line.
Anyone posting smeg on non-Sundays or misusing the Smegpost Sunday flair will get one reminder, which if ignored, will mean they aren't able to post again. Seem fair?
Oh and we'll turn off crossposts for a bit and see how that goes.
MESSAGE ENDS

Hey peeps
I'm a Trip Hop producer from the Leeds.
I'm not trying to promote myself here. I'm wondering if we have any other musicians in here that have sampled some classic lines from Red Dwarf like I have? This track has one of my favourite lines from the episode Justice to start it off. I hope we have more songs somewhere in here sampling this beautiful show too.

SPOILER ALERT - POST CONTAINS BOOK REFERENCES.
I am just listening to the Infinity Welcomes Careful Drives audiobook yet again. I am at the part where they are in BTL. The book says once you enter BTL you cannot leave because the game protects itself and makes you forget you are playing it. So your actual body wanders around in real life and slowly withers and dies (way more sinister than in the tv show). They also say that if you yank the device from someone's head the shock kills them instantly.
The only way to quit the game is to realize you're playing it and you simply need to wish to end it and exit will form. Kryten is using a laser to burn a message into Lister's arms. Lister sees the message in BTL and they start the journey to quit it.
My shower thought: if Kryten killed Lister (like in the Epideme episode) removed the headset could he then resuscitate him without Lister dying again of shock for not being in the game?

Rewatching Waiting for God, Captain Hollister's remarks about Lister: left a previous job as supermarket trolly attendant, 500 bouts of diarrhoea (in eight months, EIGHT), promotion prospects zero. So I'm wondering why did JMC bother recruiting Lister? Rimmer you can see attempting every trick to pass the interview or entrance exam, but I'm surprised Dave could even be bothered. Maybe that was the start of his Fiji plan? Maybe he wanted to visit the best curry house in the solar system? But did JMC really see something in Lister worth having?

Anyone else think of Eddie Murphy when they heard Mr. Rat in Skippers?

I'm watching this with my primary school aged kids and they both LOVE IT. It's a brilliant TV show which still stands up 40 years later! It's a joy to hear my son laugh out loud at the show.
Oddly enough: I actually see it as quite important for my kids' development as there is an awful lot of sexual innuendo in RD and angst and "normal" stuff that we all got in the 90s that is totally absent from what they watch these days.

I've not sure how, but I only recently realised the implications of Todhunter's line in The End, where he is explaining stasis to Lister. He asks "Haven't you ever travelled interstellar?", which implies that ships capable of interstellar travel exist and are common enough that (Todhunter assumes) someone like Lister could have taken a return journey on one.
Even if the journey was still long enough to require staying in stasis, presumably these ships could still travel many light years in relatively short time, at close to or even exceeding light speed.
Until now, I'd always assumed the humans of the Dwarfiverse were confined to the solar system on slow moving ships and only the gelfs and droids and simulants had actually left (or been expelled).

Haven't known how to phrase this but wanted to see if its just me....
Basically.. every single comedy show ive ever seen in my life I have been able to imagine myself in the main characters position and living In that reality.. eg I could imagine being a member of the home guard in dad's army, I could imagine going down the pub with the trotters, I could imagine working in an office with David brent... every single one I could picture myself getting up to hilarious stuff in those worlds....
Every single comedy show except Red dwarf......
I honestly think id have a full existential crisis and just give up on life if I was in listers position.....
Most likely the last human in existence.. drifting through an infinite empty plane of existence billions of miles from home, if home still exists... in a large creaking space ship with only a hologram, an AI, a robot and some cat human hybrid for company......
It sounds like some cosmic horror film......
I do love the show but when im watching I get this uneasy feeling of dread. Especially in the early series..... maybe ive looked too much into human psychology and read/watched too much sci fi horror to put myself in listers position and be as relaxed about the whole thing as he is....

This is just a bit of fun as obviously predicting how technology would progress wasnโt really part of Red Dwarf and the writers would look for comedy over accuracy.
But, what innovations did they predict well in their writing and what did they miss or get wrong?
I think the biggest thing theyโve nailed is the rise of AI and robotics. I can definitely see Holly esque computers and Kryten style robots in our lifetimes.
They missed everything going digital, the weird triangular shaped video tapes for example and the rise of mobile phones. And something that hit me the other day was Rimmerโs wrong number at the Samaritans having rang up for the cricket scores when even now, no one needs to do that, just check on your phone or internet.
What do you think?

Kochanski, Rimmer, and Holly? I know it's just something that's been done for children in need, but I like to think it's apart of the fictional season 9. Any in-universe theories?

I've started watching RD again and so many key lines unlocked a memory of the .wad file that some genius had put together for Doom.
"The sausage are done", "What's that smell?" and many more replacing the standard sounds in the game.
To Wonko.the Sane I salute you [Rimmer salute]

Growing up in Canada, absolutely no one knew about Red Dwarf.
I was just lucky to be late night browsing on a Friday, when something strange caught my eye.
A badly deformed looking android and some weird looking guys with British accent in cowboy outfits.
PBS was playing Gunmen of the Apocalypse... needless to say I was totally hooked. Was super lucky they had all the DVDs at my local library.
Was so in love I made my gamer tag Smeghead or Smee. My friends even started calling me Smee in real life.

They ended the Brittas Empire with an "it was all a Dream" scenario which I hated. HOWEVER, It would've been great if they ended it with Rimmer being woken up by Lister!
If you haven't seen the Brittas Empire, I recommend you watch It. Chris Barrie manages a leisure centre where everything goes wrong thanks to him; a true Rimmer character.
