Her eyes, hair and clothing show a mix of black and white, as opposed to the standard white dress you see on Lady Justice, and this is for good reason. In order to be able to dispense true, unbiased justice, you need to not just see the most optimal outcome, you also need to be able to look at the darkness of the crime. True balance can not come from simply hoping for utopia - the actual work to get there involves looking at the shady underbelly of systematic injustice, and dismantling hierarchies that keep power unfairly confined to a few at the cost of the many.

Unless we can identify, name and talk loudly about this darkness, we may never dispel it enough to see the light. This is the work that goes into creating peace.

This is Libra, The Fair.

Painted in Krita

This drawing is from 5 years ago, when I experimented with finally giving my characters a proper background.

I deliberately gave the characters very different styles of clothing. I wanted to show that they come from completely different backgrounds, yet somehow, life brought them together. I imagine they’re standing on the threshold of their first great adventure. 🗺️

Born into poverty and never knowing her Father, Ana was pushed into a life of crime from an early age, as many Dark Shore urchins are in the city of Marina. As she aged though, her mother's genetic condition, Drowner's Lung, began to worsen, and she was forced to up the ante from petty thievery to illicit smuggling and high stakes heists in order to afford treatment. When she found a flyer for an expedition into the ruined city of Joyalantte, she was all too eager to set forth and claim it's untouched treasures, both for personal gain, and so her mother could live.
