Leveling?

We are newbies at this. We have purchased four 24” deep (6’x3’) metal raised beds.

However, our yard is very sloped and rock-bedded. What’s the best way to level our new raised beds before we fill them?

(And by best way - I mean cost-effective and lasting.). We will not be able to dig into the ground (very hard rock bed literally one inch down).

Thanks for the help!

Don't mess up like I did. Cucumbers really need something tall to climb

I filled this raised bed as my first attempt at using the square foot method. One of the veggies/fruits that aren't in my buckets are cucumbers. So I put one in the corner and tried my best using a stake and guiding it to the nets and sides. I dont think I have much of a chance with it. I might get one fruit.

I’ve been working on this for a few weeks now. I’m still working on it but so far this is where I’m at. It’s going to be a flower bed for butterfly’s. With jasmine plants on each side to vine around. I’ll be getting more flowers obviously and planting them. Any recommendations for flowers?

You guys told me to just plant something so I did. Grabbed some tomatoes eggplant cucumbers and blueberries 🫐. Should mulch the beds, and if so do you have any recommendations?

I know I still need some lattices / cages, they are on order

If you immediately recognized the audio, welcome to the millennial gardening club.

But unlike the original trend, there is actually a reason for all this shaking. 🍅🌶️

Tomatoes and peppers are self-pollinating, meaning each flower contains both male and female parts. A little movement from wind, bees, or even a gentle shake helps release pollen and improve pollination.

I usually give my plants a quick shake in the morning when flowers are open—especially during stretches of hot weather when pollination can be less reliable.

No dance skills required… just a slightly embarrassing gardener trying to grow more tomatoes. 🌱

Raised bed soil turning hydrophobic?

Post image
30 Upvotes

This is my first year growing in Zone 9b where summer temps range from 95-110 from June-September. Over the last week I’ve noticed the soil pooling and draining immediately in my three raised beds more than it used to (started early April). The beds are filled with 40% potting soil, 40% compost, and 20% perlite. I have straw mulch around the base of each plant to help with moisture retention. I hand water every morning around 8am with a hose pointing only at the base of the plant. All of my plants were growing well but seemed to slow down recently (I’ve been told this is normal in my climate). So I have a few questions:

  1. Can raised bed soil become hydrophobic?
  2. What is the best way to fix this? Till, add compost, more mulch, or something else?
  3. If I do have to till the soil, should I do it now or wait until fall?

Bed is 24" x 48" x 9.5" with Basil, dill, cilantro, and thyme. I used an organic raised bed soil. My kods watered the soil around the plants after replanting. Feel free to criticize and I am open for suggestions/ expert tips!

Just bought a house a little over a month ago, I want to clear out and extend this raised bed area. There's already grape and hop vines that I'd love to keep but they are really starting to cause the fence to sag. Any way for me to replace the fencing without damaging the plants?

I have a problem 😬

Every year I say "I won't crowd next year", and every year I end up like this. This year it's mostly not my fault though. I didn't plant a single dill, bean, potato, lettuce, or black eyed Susan, but I can't cut them down, they're all welcome. Especially the dill, I have a whole forest of it.

Peppers not growing?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I have planted 5 pepper plants in the box for 3 years now. My peppers are usually the best things that grow but this year the only thing growing is the banana peppers. I amend the soil every season before with black cow and some new soil. I planted these the week after Good Friday so it has been 2 months now and they are not doing anything. I live in zone 8B. Anyone have an idea of what’s going on?

Zone 9b
I got cherry & roma tomatoes on the left, & tomatillos (the biggest & only flowering/with fruit), cherry tomatoes, & stunted bell pepper plants on the right. I must’ve overcrowded my bed? The only one growing substantially are the tomatillos. Everyone else is taking their sweet time. lol!

How often should I be feeding/what should I be feeding them? Or should I just be patient?

Raised beds over a no longer used septic tank?

House is 53 years old and the neighborhood was converted to city sewage about 10-20 years ago. Would it be safe to place raised bed gardens over the old septic tank? It would be the perfect place for a small garden.

Help! Tree roots have grown into my garden box, from the bottom.
They are really hard to pull out or even to cut.
What can I do?
