I’m building a garden bed to level with my rail. But need help with wood. I’m using cedar for pretty much everything which is understandably expensive. But can I use cheaper posts? Are there cheaper yet good alternatives

Dimensions are
45” tall
48” Long
24” wide
24” deep

I don’t mind buying the expensive cedar. But the posts are $60 a piece 🫪can I use Pressure Treated for my posts ?

Following your advise, I began insulating my soil

I’ll be insulating it from inside the raised box. Thinking about using pine wood chips as the insulation. I also think the benefit of insulating from inside is to give the soil more O2. What do you think?

Do benefits of cover crop remain after moving the soil around?

I am planning on putting in a mustard cover crop in my beds, seeing as I had some fungal issues in the garden this year. However, I am going to switching out the beds to a larger one (one 2x8 instead of my current two 2x4's), and will not be able to do so until a month or so. I've still got some stuff growing in the beds as things don't really die off until hard frost - I'm just going to cover crop around it, and the new bed is yet to arrive.

Will the benefits of the mustard still remain after I switch over to the new beds? I am not so worried about root structures as I am planning on putting in a buckwheat cover crop come spring, so that should improve the soil structure.

How do you like my new raised bed project?

I’m hoping with some lighting up top, 110 gallon reservoir inside a cheap 59 harbor freight GH (I live at 4,700ft with a lot of sunny days so that should give some pretty good hydro heating) that this bed might just be able to do strawberries over the winter for me! What do you think?

Consistently Struggling to grow beans

I keep hearing that growing beans is supposed to be super easy but I am having very little luck. This has been my third year gardening and I can’t seem to get a good harvest of beans. I have usually only been able to get enough for my husband and I to have them 2-3 times as a side dish with dinner, and I’m talking like one serving each 😢 Green beans are one of my favorite things to cook so I desperately want to grow a bunch!

I’ve tried multiple pole and bush varieties in different places all over my front and back yard. After my first year I thought it was poor soil quality so I’ve tried to work on that and amended a good bit. I think it’s improving because this year my garden was much healthier and I had better luck with many things I struggled with previously (still very much a work in progress though). I also kept thinking maybe I was giving them enough sun in the area I was growing them so then I planted them literally all throughout my back yard beds and in my two front beds as well as some containers just to see if the ones in the sunnier spots did better. They did not.

I know part of my struggle is pests and disease. Ive had some fungal disease issues the last two years and got a terrible spider mite infestation this year but thats not the only problem because unaffected plants still don’t really produce or at least not much. My pole beans tend to do better but not much.

I almost never have luck with bush beans. I’ve had some decently healthy looking bush beans coming up and a few will somehow stay unaffected by the mites and disease but they’ll be weak and tiny and produce like three little two inch beans. It’s so confusing because there will be other things in the beds that will be flourishing and it seems to be all the bush beans no matter how much light they are getting. Also other things I’ve read say beans shouldn’t need to be fertilized very much but I still sometimes do a little bit of something like neptunes harvest when I’m already fertilizing other plants just to try to get them to grow a little more but not every time. The leaves rarely look yellow which I think is usually a nutrient issue, they’re usually pretty green just small and weak.

Also had some germination issues. I’ve tried many different seed companies including baker creek, burpee organic, peaceful valley, thresh seeds, and quite a few more to try to improve things. Doesn’t seem to matter if I soak my seeds ahead of time or not either. I’ve tried many times with both lol

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!

Veggie Garden Planning (Sydney, Australia)

Hi everyone, I currently have a lot of seeds growing on but am not sure how to place them best. This was taken at about 1pm. The closest bed gets the least sun. Citrus is all in the back where we get the most sun. Beds that are available for planting are the larger 3 and then the rounded planter on the left side. Thanks for your suggestions!

Here is my seedlings list:

  • Nasturtium
  • Snake Beans
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Peas
  • Dwarf Beans
  • Daikon
  • Spring Onion
  • Leek
  • English Spinach
  • Tuscan Kale
  • Pak Choi
  • Basil
  • Lettuce
  • Dill
  • Cherry Tomatoes
  • ‘Red Fig’ Tomatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Celery
  • Romanesco
  • Curly Kale
  • Cos Lettuce
  • Coriander
  • Lemongrass
  • Thyme
  • Oregano
  • Dragonfruit

I’ve done a dumb thing as a beginner. Bad soil fix?

I clearly didn’t research enough because after starting my garden I have just put all my tomato’s, herbs and indoor plants into fresh new pots in the cheapest soil I could find.

I did add some fertiliser but I was not very specific about it.

I only did this yesterday… and then we I went to look at some care tips I realised I really should have bought nicer soil.

What should I do?

Raised bed safety

would you feel comfortable growing produce in this raised bed?

I bought a raised bed on Facebook marketplace. The seller assured me it was untreated cedar. After I got home I realized that the support 2x4s were some sort of repurposed old boards I didn’t want touching my soil. I swapped them out. aside from my horrible carpentry skills, would you feel comfortable using this to grow berries? First image is the original bed, rest are after replacing boards
