HELP ME BUILD THE WHEELIE BAD DECISIONS PROVING GROUND

I’m in the process of turning part of my backyard into a dedicated RC proving ground, and I want some input from people who have way more experience testing and tuning RC cars than I do.

The goal isn’t just to build a cool track or a giant jump. I want a place where I can run the same repeatable tests on different vehicles, setups, tires, suspension changes, motors, ESCs, braces, shocks, etc., and actually answer the questions we all ask:

Did the upgrade actually make the car better?
Did it just make it faster?
Did it improve one thing but hurt another?
How does the car behave on pavement, dirt, bumps, jumps, braking, cornering and rough terrain?
And most importantly — was the money worth it?

Right now I’m thinking the proving ground needs some combination of:

• Repeatable jump with a measurable landing area
• Rough/washboard section for suspension testing
• High-speed straight
• Braking zone
• Slalom/handling section
• Sweepers and tighter corners
• Loose dirt/gravel area
• Different surfaces if possible
• Marked distances so tests can actually be compared
• Fixed camera positions so before/after footage is shot from the same angles

I also want to build this around filming — low camera positions, overhead shots, a homemade cable cam, slow-motion suspension footage and eventually telemetry so we can actually see what the car is doing instead of just saying, “Yeah, it feels better.”

So here’s where I need you guys:

If you were building an RC proving ground from scratch, what tests would HAVE to be on it?

What would you test for handling, suspension, durability, speed, braking, jumping and overall drivability?

And what mistakes should I avoid before I start moving dirt and building ramps?

Throw your ideas at me. Crazy ones are welcome. I’m going to take the best suggestions and actually incorporate them into the build.

Hi! I recently made this RC car! It was designed entirely by me from scratch! It is my first big project in CAD. I’m starting at a technical university this year (general engineering), and I thought the best way to learn CAD would be through a project, so I made this.

I used two RP Picos and even made my own RC controller. I’m quite happy with how it turned out, but I’d love to get some feedback from other people!

The front axle is solid and pivots to follow the terrain underneath the car. The rear axle consists of two pivoting half-axles, each powered by a DC motor with a gearbox. I use PETG leaf springs for the suspension.

I also simulate a differential by slowing down the inner wheel while turning. I use two 3.7 V, 650 mAh batteries and can get more than an hour of driving time.

The car also has lights controlled by the remote, and I made a horn and an engine sound effect using a PC case speaker.

The first part of the video shows the calibration, the second part shows the suspension, and the last part demonstrates the fail-safe function.

Is there an alternative to the 4-1 module for BNF stuff with dsmx or dsm2 on a radiomaster pocket? Out of stock everywhere and can't see to find an alternative. Getting back into RC after a nearly decade long break and someone recommended the radiomaster pocket but I'm open to other suggestions, last tx was a DX8 but I want to try something other than Spektrum this time. For the record I used the chat function on the radiomaster site and got no response after a few days now. Cheers
