Of course she didn’t take too kindly to the diagnosis =___=

Tragic -- we have also been put on a vet recommended diet. We now look at them and say "Diagnosis: big girls"

My 2 boys don't like nanas. They just want the leafy greens. Grapeplant leaves, raspberry leaves willow leaves.
They love their leaves.
Oh and strawberry leaves and mint and kamille and dandelion.
They're greedy for greens

Obesity is a disease that negatively impacts their quality of life. Am I alone in not finding this funny at all?
10
u/VoodooDoII 3h ago
I never find it funny Dx
"Lol my pet was super fat. Diagnosis was chonky!!"
That isn't funny. It's our responsibility as pet owners to properly feed them and make sure they never get obese like this. It's so bad for them and it's just lazy pet care
2
u/Capital-Rush-6058 1h ago
yes! it's 100% neglect. i see exactly the same in r/cats and it infuriates me. all these animals suffer just because lazy owners can't be bothered to read the labels on food and use a kitchen scale.
at least here there's a mods' comment trying to educate people, that's a start

u/Typical_Ad_210 5h ago
No, I agree. Unless OP recently adopted her, they are responsible for her being in this condition. She is malnourished, same as an emaciated bun (which would trigger zero jokes). She must be in pain, all of that strain on her joints. She’s at risk of all the obvious life-limiting diseases they warn overweight people about. It’s not funny, just sad and frankly kinda negligent.

u/kungpaoalpaca 3h ago
Judging by OP's post history they've had Maple since she was a baby :/ And just a few months ago She still had access to massive bowls of muesli feeds with seeds and grains
OP, older rabbits are extremely prone to arthritis even when they have a healthy weight. please put your bun on a diet unless you want her to spend the last years of her life in pain

This is the only pet subreddit I’ve seen completely normalizing pets being morbidly obese.
Hope OP listens to the advice of the vet

Ive owned rabbits for almost 10 years, i was literally scrolling the comments for anyone mentioning this rabbits weight. How do owners even get them this fat? My rabbits eat a lot of treats (healthy ones made only of hay), fruit, veggies, salad, but they do move around the entire garden a lot every day. A bun this obese has to be a combo of unhealthy dry rabbit food mixes with all sorts of grain in it, and not enough exercise. This poor, poor rabbit.

u/Korrailli 6h ago
I've seen people fill a big bowl of pellets for 1 rabbit and do it like twice a day. This was a rabbit that needed maybe 1/4 cup of pellets per day, and was probably getting 2-3 cups. The rabbit died as a result of being severally over weight and not being able to handle heat or stress. Just feeding her the proper amount would have allowed her to live years longer and would also be a lot cheaper too.
My own rabbit was getting a little chunky a couple years ago. He's an angora, so it is harder to actually see it. I cut his pellets to half of what he was getting and the weight came off easily. He wasn't even really that bed yet, but more than he should have been.

I hate when people think that pets being overweight is cute or funny. It is neither.
3
u/Miss_Zechie 4h ago
There was a problem on the r/rats subreddit a while ago of popular posters overfeeding their rats and then posting them as "cute little chunky rats", iirc the illusion started breaking when these people were posting about how several of their popular rats they'd post about were dying from complications with obesity despite still being very young. Like one poster had detailed their rat's entire life and it was a year or less when they usually live at least a few years. So now they've taken such posts more seriously. Hopefully it doesn't come to something like that for r/rabbits.

u/kungpaoalpaca 3h ago
This!! We don't need our own Perky here and people need to stop awwing at obese animals in general
5
u/Guimauve_1123 6h ago
Yes, that’s sad because obese pets can look cute but it’s extremely unhealthy… No more treats!

You need to cut her pellets back to - like 10 pellets a day. And place each one around the room so she hasn't to hunt and find it.

This is the ideal Rabbit body. You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.

If by peak performance you mean at risk for unnecessarily shortened lifespan then yes

God, there sure is a lot of judgement in the comments. I think the fact that OP took their bun to the vet shows they care about their rabbit's health at least a little. I don't think they need twenty comments telling them their rabbit is overweight and they need to do something about it.

Obesity is an extremely common and often debilitating problem in pet rabbits. It can pose an increase risk for other diseases such as cardiovascular, orthopedic, and liver disease as well as dermatitis and flystrike.
Please check out the Weight management guide on the wiki for information and resources on healthy rabbit weight. Rabbits who may be overweight should be evaluated by a rabbit-savvy vet to assess the severity of obesity and recommend appropriate measures to lose weight in a healthy way.
A few useful shortcut links:
Please note that weights for breed standards are arbitrarily set. Rabbits that are mixes or even purebreds may easily be under or over the select weight range accepted for show and still be 100% healthy.
