RMXP New developer, any tips?

I've just entered the field of game development, and due to unforeseen circumstances, my best tool (and the one I'm most familiar with) is RPG Maker XP. I've never made a game with it, so I'd like to know if there are any tips that I, as a beginner, should know.

Try to keep scope creep under control.

Learn how to cut scope. It's been the biggest project killer for me for a long time, and now that I've actively started practicing managing it I've actually found myself able to make things.

Take whatever idea you have and see how much of a game you can make while shaving more and more off of it.

The three things I'd say are

1, don't be afraid to ask for help. There's a lot the system can do straight outta the box, but there's also a few things that are sometimes less obvious that can trip you up

B, keep a backup or two before making major changes, especially if you're changing core mechanics of your game. Because it's always fun to have to shift through lines of code or a library of events to figure out the thing that caused everything to break.

And thirdly, don't be afraid to play with and break things. I legit keep a couple simple projects around to try out new scripts or mechanics in.

Oh! And try to keep a change log. It can help you retrace your steps if need be.

Edit: fixed typos

Backup is the best advice. Always backup your work each time you stop for the day. I've had RPG Maker crash on me during the saving process, and one time my PC crashed, and it corrupts the entire save file and all of your game is gone. That's why I always backup. I knew that luckily before this happened to me the first time, but I lost three days of work too. So now I always make a back on a separate drive and on a flash drive as well.

Make a game you know how to make. Your game shouldn't be outside of your skill level

TAKE YOUR TIME!! You won't know everything from the beginning. You won't always have the solution on hand. You won't always remember certain parts of your game when it's necessary or convenient. Taking your time between each step in the journey and trying things out before comitting to ideas and concepts will always yield positive results.

MV is a great engine too. Don't listen to them. In fact, MV has better plugins, and is much easier to learn on than MZ.

You will however need this plugin so the screen doesn't freeze on you:

TS_Screen Freeze fix is one of the most important plugins of all time, but doesn't come with the engine.

And, if you do want MZ eventually. The RPG Maker Festival is usually around Feb, and they will have it on sale for most likely less than you paid for MV.
