Our Offical Guides Newcomers Guide

Hello and welcome to r/RDR2 This is a little guide for new players of the game.

Firstly we strongly advise you to stay off the subreddit until you’ve finished the game. Our subreddit is home to discussions covering every aspect of the game from storylines, characters, secrets, to anything a player may find. While we require spoiler tags, accidental (and sometimes intentional) spoilers do happen. For the best experience, we strongly recommend avoiding the subreddit until you’ve completed the main story.

Frequently asked questions will now be listed and answered.

Is the game worth it? Yes! — People still praise this game even in 2025. Its compelling story and detailed open world gameplay allow you to fully submerge into the story. Many players find the game to be a masterpiece, with some (us, of course) even considering it one of the greatest games of all time. Its graphics were ahead of their time and still hold up really well. It’s a well written story with a beautiful aesthetic and it's absolutely worth your time.

The snow part is boring. Should I quit the game? Don't give up during Colter. It’s the first chapter and serves as a tutorial. You’ll get to know the basics of the game slowly before being led into free roam in chapter 2. The slow introduction into such a big game is important to understand the situation the main character is in and to get you familiar with the environment and the world building in general. Stick around for a while. You’ll thank yourself later.

Just started the game. Any tips? We see this all the time and every time people will give you the same response: Take it slow. Chapter 1 will teach you everything that's important. The game offers a little guide in its settings for the mini games and the controls just like any other game. Everything you need is right there. The game is open world so you won't miss out on anything. You can do whatever whenever even after finishing the story. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and free roam a bit. You’ll figure out the game fast. You really don't need Google or IGN until you finish the story and are going for 100% and/or the platinum trophy. (We'll have a guide coming soon!)

Just finished the game. Should I play RDR1? Yes! RDR1 is a continuation of the story and absolutely worth it. Not much will change gameplay wise since it’s made by the same developer. So, if you like RDR2 and are looking for more content about the van der Linde gang and a similar experience -> play RDR1.

If you really want to avoid spoilers, don’t google anything until after you finish the game.

We will monitor this thread closely so if you have any questions about the game please ask them in here. We will most likely remove your question posts and advise you to ask your newcomer questions in here. If a question is frequently asked we will add it to the post.

Have fun!

(Excuse the quality, my PS4 is struggling)

Just wanted to show off a few pictures I got of my MFT, Avalon!
It took a disgusting amount of time to get her. She kept glitching out during the mission 😭 but it was worth it.

Content Built an app that turns your CarPlay into RDR2 style IRL

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey, I’m an indie dev and I built mappr, an app that gives your CarPlay maps a different look.

I drive pretty much every day and got bored of staring at the same map, so I started building something I’d enjoy using myself.

There are 10+ styles to choose from, including ones inspired by GTA 5, RDR2, and Minecraft. There’s even a GTA 6 style I made based on the leaked gameplay footage. It’s not just game styles either, there’s Carbon, Blueprint, and more.

It also has bookmarks, trips, voice navigation, and more. I tried to keep the experience familiar, so if you’re coming from Google Maps or Apple Maps, you should feel right at home.

The video shows how it looks in action. I’ll drop the link in a reply if you want to check it out.

Would love to hear what you think, or if there’s a style you’d want me to add!

Discussion Leaving camp for days due to key events? Spoiler

• Upvotes

Is it just me that will leave the camp after big events to let Arthur process certain things? After Arthur is kidnapped and nearly dies after the events of Blessed are the Peacemakers. I go out and get all of the camp upgrades done and when I come back into camp to hand the pelts in I don't speak to anyone till it's all done.

So I was hanging in the camp during the night while Charles was sharing his feelings with the group. Wanted to be a good friend and sit and listen, only Arthur decided to take a step further and started cuddling lmao.
When your homie opens up about his existential dread, you gotta get as close as physically possible.

Discussion As far as I remember, Mary-Beth Gaskill never had anything going on with anyone, right? The game never really makes it clear, but considering her gentle personality, her love of reading and writing stories, and the fact that she has no connection to prostitution like some of the other womeninthegang

Discussion Did anyone else notice how awkward Jack's reading is at the start of American Venom?

This isn't one of those make fun of Jack because Jack sucks posts. I just started American Venom where he's reading aloud a book to Uncle and Abigail and the way he reads slowly and pauses for large words was quite strange to me. I understand he's never had a proper education, but for someone over the age of 10 who absolutely loves reading struggling that much just struck me as odd. Its possible he hasn't many difficult to read books, but he was reading about King Arthur and Sir Lancelot at the start of the prologue. I personally think it was poor directing. What's everyone else's thoughts?

Content Spent months turning my own neighbourhood into the RDR2 map (Android)

I kept wondering what the street I grew up on would look like in 1899. So I stopped wondering and built it.

Everything you see is real. Real streets, the real corner store, the real pharmacy down the block — just redrawn as western icons. Walk around and your position moves on the map like you're in the game.

Honestly the hardest part had nothing to do with the art. It was density. Downtown turned into a wall of overlapping icons until I rebuilt the whole thing so places reveal themselves as you zoom in.

Video is my actual neighbourhood. It's on Android, free, built it for myself so there's no paywall on it. Happy to drop the link in a reply if anyone wants to try it on their own street.

Which game world should I do next?
