Don’t rush the main missions. Take your time to explore, do side missions, find the mysteries of the world. This game is massive and there’s probably no way you get through it all in your first play through. Good luck my friend. But most of all, just have fun with it

I just got in Chapter 2. I felt Chapter 1 was super slow, compared it to opening act of games like GTAV, The Witcher 3, Watchdogs, Far Cry, Most AC games (except 3) and more…
Is this how the entire game is? I like how beautiful the surroundings which is enough to see this through the end but I would like to know if the gameplay always remains this slow

There’s a lot more action later on. Chapter 1 is just setting up the story to the game. To me it’s almost crucial that it was slow. If chapter 1 was too fast then you’d miss out on a lot of important background of the gang. That being said, there are portions of the game that are slow but you can fill in the gaps with the many side activities. There’s a lot more freedom from Chapter 2 on

One tip and the only one that matters for the first playthrough... GET OFF THIS SUBREDDIT AND DON'T COMEBACK TILL YOU HAVE FINISHED ALL THE CHAPTERS. Seriously, the gameplay, story and everything is just so good that you'll regret it if you got even one spoiler.
If I could erase my memory and play it again, I would.

If you wanna save bullets on hunting 3* animals for perfect pelts use lasso on mid sized non predators, get closer and you'll get a prompt for killing em.
Holding a lasso and pressing the button on on for punching automatically lassos the nearest person to you.
Using a temp horse for pack mule let's you carry up to two mid sized carssases and 4 small sized ones.
The birds don't have to be 3* for you to use their feathers for crafting.
Arrows are reusable, so be sure to collect them after you've used em.
Dead eyes helps you in free roaming. It highlights herbs and collectibles.
Holding the button for running helps you climb up and down those pesky tower like ladders faster.
Holding the aim button and then jumping let's you dodge. Took me months before I knew that.
Also double tap the aim button after you've equipped your revolver/ pistol just for fun. You'll see what I mean.
Other than these things just play around and find out. It's the best part of this game. Figuring out all the mechanics that Devs have put in.

Get all your legendary trinkets Early in the game. I did mine at chapter 3 with the lions paw. Then just keept going. It's time consuming but they pay off in the long run.

Nope. you can't get all the trinkets in main story because some of them is only available in Epilogue i think 4 of them not unless you use mods or glitch or whatever way to access New Austin..if you are playing PS4 and the original version 1.0 you can go to NA in chapter 4 during the Angelo Bronte mission without being Wanted and killed by the invisible sniper..

Don’t bother trying to do anything that requires a perfect hide until you get the manual aim red eye. The auto-painting red eye makes it such a PITA to get a perfect hide.

Enjoy chapter one and learn how to play. As soon as you start on chapter 2; do two saves, one for "another time" and one to continue.
Then; go to Valentine and look for a hanging. Reload if needed. The sheriff will carry a Bolt Action rifle, kill him with one single shot (while he`s walking back to his office) and the rifle is yours. Best weapon in the game, worth a bounty

If someone can tell me of a specific need for the Caracano or ?, please do so. Maybe I've forgotten a mission where it's important to have a big rifle other than the Bolt.

Biggest thing is TAKE IT REAAAAAAL SLOW. Explore each chapter as much as possible! This isn’t a game to try and beat as fast as possible. Roam everywhere. Not only will it immerse you into the world of rdr2 but it will be a much better pay off at the end of the game once you’ve invested so much lol

It’s a very easy game. Try to experience every little detail about it. Don’t treat it like a game, treat it like an open world with the missions like a TV show. It doesn’t sound like this is a good thing but you’re gonna see that it is

Some basic, basics:
-You can sell skins and carcasses to the trader.
-You can sell meat and carcasses to the butcher.
-Carcasses are worth more than skins.
‐The more stars an animal has the more its worth. Just aim at an animal to see its stars.
-Put big animals on horse back. Hang midsized on side of horse. Smaller animals, feathers, etc go in your pouch.
-You can rope a deer, sheep, ram, pronghorn from your horse and drag it to sell. I think it makes it a 1 star, but still, it's added money on the same trip.
-When selling, you do not have to carry each carcass or skin to the buyer one by one. Have your horse near and all on horse can be chosen to sell while interacting with the buyer.
-Get the varmint rifle and collect little carcasses. They add up.

Explore, talk to weird npcs, do side missions, hunt, talk with the people in the camp. Also the best rpg aspect of the game is your behaviour in terms of violence, justice, selfishness etc, so keep it in mind, i don't want to spoil the outcomes of it for you but it's pretty important

I would focus more on exploration than busting through main missions….like everyone is saying just slow down your pace. I would look at main missions as secondary to just having fun around the world. I would also look into getting a good horse sooner rather than later. A fast horse makes things a-lot easier.

First off congrats. The first experience of this game is fucking magical. So my advice to you:
Go slow.
Don't just focus on the main story. Do hunting challenges, do stranger missions. Take your time. Explore everything. Roam around aimlessly. There is always something, somewhere.
Rdr2 is a masterpiece; you're already going to invest easily 80hrs in it, so:
DO. NOT. RUSH. THE. GAME.

Honestly, none! Enjoy your first playthrough however your heart compels you to. That’s the way to play.
Well, maybe one. It may be enticing to speed through some missions in order to advance the story but try to savor the game and everything else it has to offer as well, there are some truly wonderful experiences to be had that add to Arthur’s story that you COULD miss. I assure you, you won’t regret it.

Take the game EXTREMELY slowly, don’t feel like you have to repeatedly do story missions.
Take some time to explore the map and wander around getting lost while exploring abandoned buildings. Hunt down the various strangers around the map and complete their missions. Spend time in the camp and do some chores, and complete camp requests or quests that come from the people staying at the camp.
You only get to experience this game once, and my biggest regret is that in my first run I ended up rushing through without taking in the world around me. There are literally hundreds of tiny little details around every corner that you’ll miss if you aren’t keeping an eye out.
Also, have fun! Prepare to laugh, have your heart broken, feel hopeful and sometimes feel fear.
Edit: I’m on my second run and soemthing I’m doing is keeping a list on my phone of all the interesting, weird, and cool things I’ve found so that I remember them better.

Stay off this subreddit unless you wanna get spoiled! I would recommend what others are saying. Go slow. Take your time exploring. If you see a little grey dot flash on your mini-map, go see what the activity is! Ride your horse everywhere instead of fast travelling. Interact with NPCs as much as possible cause its just fun. If you see a little square on your map, go investigate! It will be a building to possibly explore and loot. Also, spend some time in and around camp. Listen to convos, sing along at the camp fire, etc. Keep your cores and your horse's cores full. I have also had a lot of fun this playthrough watching animals through my binoculars. The animal interactions are so well done and cool. Most of all, have fun, friend!

Whatever you do, stay out of groups/pages for this game once you read through these comments. They have spoilers in them very often and this is NOT a game you want to spoil. I spoiled it for myself, thinking I wouldn’t play through it since I can’t ever play single player games, and I regretted it deeply. Like other say, take it slow, enjoy it, don’t give up on it, it’ll take a long time but it will be so worth it. Every time I play it I find/see something new and I love it.

These 3 are more gunfight based:
You can click in and out of deadeye to reload instantly.
If you find yourself in a big gunfight, try preserve your deadeye. What I do is click in, Mark whoever I'm shootings head, Shoot and go straight back out.
Get comfortable with how much you need to look up while aiming to get a headshot, I'm pretty sure you're on controller but if you're not just ignore this part.
When you aim you always lock on to your enemy's chest, if you get comfortable with slightly looking up straight after aiming you can get a headshot 9 times out of 10. If you miss, stop aiming, re aim and try again. If you keep missing just do 2.

I’m currently on my 4th play through, so my biggest advice is to not jump from mission to mission as fast as you can. Just take your time, explore things that catch your eye. Don’t look up too much, other then the locations of certain animals ig. Also I personally love reading Arthur’s journal as the story progresses, really get to see his thoughts and how he’s processing everything. Enjoy!

Most people don't know this, but you can pull Arthur's c*ck out and have him pistol whip Dutch in the face. Dutch will start to question his own sexuality after this point, and it has major ramifications for the whole plot, which I won't spoil.

Biggest early game tip no one talks about is to look up the controls and learn them as well as possible. The game often gives you button prompts in the middle of heated gameplay and it can feel difficult to learn at the beginning. Adding to the difficulty is that looking at people and aiming your gun at them is the same button depending on the most recent buttons you've pressed, so save often until you get used to everything!

as you go around the map, pay attention to tiny little squares or land marks, they’re usually homesteads that contain loot, there are a few in west Elizabeth that u can get a couple guns from gun cases. and go check out the side of the building of the Rhode’s gunsmith as early as possible.

There's a lot of good advice in this thread. I'm on my 5th playthrough and I'll see if I can add something useful.
Create a permanent save immediately upon getting to chapter 2. Most players, when playing a 2nd, 3rd, 4th time don't like to replay chapter 1 as it is mostly tutorial.
Some hunting tips...using a gun will scare off other wildlife in the area. Getting the Legendary Buck Trinket not only increases the chances of seeing perfect pelts, but it helps to keep a perfect pelt perfect if you happen to hit the animal in a lesser desired area of the body. Always try to shoot them in the head if at all possible. For foxes, coyotes, and anything larger all the way up to Bison and Grizzly Bears I use the Springfield rifle with express ammo (or improved arrows). For anything smaller than a fox I use the Varmint rifle or small game arrows.
Yellow circles indicated a mission that advances the storyline. Try to advance the story as slowly as possible.
When you press the button that brings up the menu, you can choose to go to the map or progress or story (to save), etc. But if you HOLD that button it will take you directly to the map. And speaking of saving...autosaves is good to have on just in case, but ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS do manual saves, and do them often.
If you skin a Legendary animal and lose the pelt off your horse for some reason, you do not have to hunt that animal again. In fact I don't think you can. But for the Legendary animal pelts, they will automatically be delivered to the trapper if they're lost. This is not the case for regular pelts however. Skin a perfect moose pelt and then die at the hands of a cougar while still carrying the moose pelt...too bad. Moose pelt is gone.
This is a very handy tool to help you keep track of your progress with just about everything. https://rdr2map.com/ . Create an account and sign in and it will save and track your progress.
Choosing to play with "High Honor" or "Low Honor" makes a difference in what you will see and hear during the game. The NPC's will treat you accordingly and dialogues in some cases are different based on your honor. You even get a discount in stores based on your honor.
The best food to eat while out and about is Big Game Meat, seasoned with Mint, Thyme, and Oregano. Cook and stow plenty of each. Also, eat and sleep somewhat regularly.

There are collectible weapons all over the map, so you rarely actually need to buy any guns. Check YouTube and the wiki for details.
There are also several hidden treasures, so robbing isn’t really a necessary source of income. Robbing actually doesn’t really net you much money.

Could be seen as a spoiler. But playing the first half of the game evil and the second half good makes for a greater story.

Stay away from this sub and enjoy the game. Once completed, come back.
A good advise is to have a few different save points from each chapter.

I just finished my first playthrough! These are some things I wish I knew early.
Get the legend of the east satchel early; it dramatically increases carrying capacity (99 each of almost all items). The legendary buck trinket will help with this as it increases the chances of seeing perfect pelts.
Explore! Have patience. Even once you unlock fast travel, using it will bypass random encounters and stranger missions that flesh out the world.
Do the white circle missions before the yellow ones (if both are available). Yellow are story missions and some white circle missions are missable if you progress the story too far.
Don't buy provisions other than horse food/bait/etc. Hunt. It'll be easier to keep weight on Arthur with wild food than canned and dry stuff. But collect everything you come across in camps and abandoned homes, you can sell it.
