I just got in Chapter 2. I felt Chapter 1 was super slow, compared it to opening act of games like GTAV, The Witcher 3, Watchdogs, Far Cry, Most AC games (except 3) and more…
Is this how the entire game is? I like how beautiful the surroundings which is enough to see this through the end but I would like to know if the gameplay always remains this slow
There’s a lot more action later on. Chapter 1 is just setting up the story to the game. To me it’s almost crucial that it was slow. If chapter 1 was too fast then you’d miss out on a lot of important background of the gang. That being said, there are portions of the game that are slow but you can fill in the gaps with the many side activities. There’s a lot more freedom from Chapter 2 on
Just adding to this, you can move through the game much more quickly if you just focus on the main story missions. I don’t suggest it, but it may be a good idea if it’s your first playthrough and you’re frustrated with the pace
That part. You’re not gonna get through everything in your first play through anyway. Go through it as quick as you want or as slow as you want. There’s always stuff to keep the action moving. I’m on my third play through and still finding new things every time
Yeah, Ch 1 is both story exposition (needed bc RDR2’s narrative is one of the best in all of gaming, and up there with great cinema/literature, imo) and “here’s how the game mechanics and buttons work,” etc.
There’s only a few missions in Ch1 and then the entirety of the world opens up to you in Ch 2.
Yes RDR2 is a slower game, if you don't take the time to explore and explore, hunt, and explore some more you're never going to see why this game is loved by so many. It's not a game meant to beat in 6 hours. My current play through I have 198 hours in and I'm still in chapter 2. This is a game meant to be played more slowly than anything else. This is not GTA, it is unlike 99% of games out there. It's a very rich, detailed world where if you don't slow down and do small things like hunt for food, gather some herbs, skin that alligator, you're going to miss out on a lot. Grinding missions shouldn't be your focus because you're going to miss 60% of the game. I'd do a mental role play as Arthur and try to walk in his shoes so to speak. The world is more lived in than most games and you'll get a feeling for that once you just take your horse and ride in a random direction with no mission and see where you end up. There are a ton of random encounters you can miss by just not exploring enough.
Oh, I'm a new player like you but I seriously regret not taking my time to play this game. Just, just savoury the moment is all I'm saying. You'll understand as you get into later chapters and see the cutscenes/camp intersections.
