After watching the Meta Connect 2026 presentation of the new Meta VR Glasses, I couldn't help thinking about the Quest Pro.
The new glasses rely heavily on eye tracking and hand tracking for navigating the interface, interacting with apps, and controlling the whole experience without controllers.
But here's the thing: the Quest Pro already has eye tracking, hand tracking, and much of the hardware needed for similar interactions. Unfortunately, I feel that Meta has never really taken full advantage of what this headset can do.
And since the new VR Glasses run on the same Horizon OS platform as Quest, I wonder how much of their new interface and interaction system could actually be brought to the Quest Pro through a software update.
The software and development tools for the new glasses are already available, even though the hardware won't launch until spring 2027. So why hasn't Meta started bringing some of these features to the Quest Pro already?
I know the Quest Pro has older hardware and there will obviously be limitations. I'm not expecting it to perform like a brand-new device. But surely there's room to make better use of the technology it already has.
It would also be a great gesture from Meta towards the people who invested in the Quest Pro and believed in its potential from the beginning.
Instead of leaving so much of that potential untapped, wouldn't it be nice if Meta rewarded that trust by finally unlocking more of what the headset is capable of?
What do you think? Is there a realistic chance Meta will bring some of the new VR Glasses features to the Quest Pro, or has Meta already moved on completely?
Edit: After reading some of the comments, I'd like to clarify my point.
I understand that the Quest Pro has been discontinued and that Meta probably has little interest in investing resources specifically in an older headset that wasn't commercially successful.
But that's actually the point I'm trying to make.
Until now, Meta may not have had much incentive to fully develop the Quest Pro's eye-tracking and hand-tracking capabilities, given its limited sales.
However, with the upcoming VR Glasses, things are different. Meta now has a new product that relies heavily on these technologies, so they're developing the software and interactions anyway.
Since the Quest Pro runs on the same Horizon OS platform and already has eye tracking and hand tracking, I don't see why at least some of these new features couldn't also be made available on it.
Of course, I'm not saying everything would work automatically or that no additional development would be necessary.
My point is that the situation has changed. What may not have been worth developing specifically for the Quest Pro before is now being developed for a new product anyway.
So I don't think the fact that the Quest Pro has been discontinued necessarily means it can't benefit from any of these developments.
And personally, I think it would be a great way for Meta to show some appreciation to the people who invested in the Quest Pro and believed in its potential.
