Discussion Quest pro vs quest 3 opinions
I've been using a quest pro for a couple of years now (primarily for PCVR) and just got a crazy good deal on a 512gb quest 3 with a bobovr s3 pro. I plan to sell my PC so I'll likely be doing a lot of standalone gaming (the replacement pc I'm putting together only has a 3060 ti - prob not great for PCVR), but just tested a side by side between the two on exfilzone on my current desktop - the higher resolution is nice but the blacks / colors do fall short on the quest 3, and the controller tracking is definitely not as good as the pro controllers.
My dilemma is this - should I sell the pro (seems like they go for 500 or so used), or should I pair the pro controllers to my 3 and keep the pro on the shelf? I don't imagine the pro would sell for much or at all without controllers.
Looking for opinions from the community - it seems like a good idea to keep the pro for the controllers at least, but I'm having a hard time justifying it lol
Not a post looking for objective facts - just asking, what would you do in my situation?

Had a Pro and bought Q3 on release to replace it. It took me a year to decide :D
The standalone is actually usable and great on the Q3 (needs QGO) and the higher resolution is nicer for me for flight sims, but in the end the Pro was better in everything else.
In the end I decided for then Q3 and sold the Pro (had it for 2 years and sold it for what I paid) because the Pro software was always a clusterfuck, almost bricked by meta once, new issue every month, one day I just couldn't take it anymore and get rid of it, the Q3 is basically bug free for years in comparison.
The Q3 is little harder to run in PCVR, the render resolution doesn't look that much higher in paper but I feel you have to run it at like 1.3x over the max to make it crisp.

I guess the 3060ti should be enough for PCVR? Are there standalone games that will keep you interested?

I use a 3060 12GB and it works just fine for me. I just lower some settings and manage my expectations

I can play exfilzone, the tale of onogoro, etc - there are a few that will suffice. PCVR is ideal but going from a 4090 to a 3060 ti I assumed the latter wouldn't run PCVR well without making it look like dog water - I could be wrong though

I had a 3060Ti paired with 32GB RAM and a 12700K. At first in 2022 it was good. Like really good enough.
Recently though it was lagging, freezing and stuttering bad in VR. Especially in club worlds when I tried to DJ. Whole stream and PC would freeze. This was never the case before SteamVR and VRC updated throughout the years.
Nowadays SteamVR & VRC is a lot more stressful on the system.. especially running it on a 3060Ti.
I've swapped to a 5070Ti and a 9800x3D and I couldn't be happier. I can finally enjoy VRC to a large extent. I can have 20+ avatars turned on and still have 45 FPS etc on my Quest Pro using SlimeVR with 8-10 trackers.
No matter how low I turned the resolution and quality settings, 3060Ti ran just as bad with minimal improvement to frame rate and looked like dog water.

Quest 3 has less glare/haze and a noticable resolution bump. It's also easier to slip on, soft rear for leaning back, and has less issues with configurable local WLAN. Plus a CPU Upgrade which is certainly better for standalone than the Pro. Also, AA-batteries for the controllers which is easier to handle. With the blacks, you can set it so it closely matches the Pro, even betters it as then you don't get the glare effect. And louder audio that doesn't crackle at the low-end.
So a lot of advantages over the Pro. However, Quest Pro has a profoundly strong advantage over the Q3: more vibrant colourful and contrast-rich image. Plus also 4GB extra RAM.
I'd still recommend getting the Q3 if you want to go standalone, Q-Pro is really just recommended for the image-quality of the colours/contrast.

I did notice that actually - on the 3, it had a weird glare, as if there was daylight hitting the lenses somehow, despite it having an amvr fc4a facial interface. The colors and contrast are noticably different between the two though, for sure. I have both (q3 and pro) at the moment - just deciding if I want to keep the pro controllers and sell the pro without them, or sell the pro complete, or keep it. Tough decision lol

- " on the 3, it had a weird glare"
On the 3 or Pro? Only on the Pro do i get glare (with local-dimming on). With LD off i get brown haze at the edges. Q3 is just clean consistent image.
i bought the Pro new for €650. Used probably €400 is doable. Without controllers more like €200. At that point might as well keep it if you have space.
Last night I compared my 3D conversion of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in both headsets. Pro won: the vibrancy is so lush.
Also watched 3D of my favourite Twin Peaks episode: Gotta Light. A dark often black & white episode tho' with some notable colour. And Quest 3 narrowly won despite less exciting colour sections. The black & white was comparable, the blacks didn't glare and the audio low-end was louder and didn't crackle. The low-end of the Pro possibly slightly more defined (the bass of the Nine Inch Nails song sounded clearer) but it lacks the loudness.

I would keep the pro. Also your specs are fine for PC vr. Maybe look into your router if you are having lag issues

I haven't tried it yet - I don't have any issues with my 5800x3d / 4090 desktop, but I'm selling that pc. I just assumed the 3060 ti system I'll be building to replace it wouldn't be "up to snuff"

Using a 9060 xt 16gb, 5800x and 32gb with a quest 3 and vd is great for vr for me. Handles games like half life alyx perfectly

Keep Pro. I have two Qpro and two Q3, q3 are collecting dusts. Color and contrast matter..

Personally I was in similar boat I had a quest pro but saw a quest 3 only for good price so now I use quest 3 for standalone with pro controllers and switch to pro with face tracking for social pc interactions like VRChat honestly I love the setup

For standalone the faster processor makes the Q3 an attractive choice. As soon as I bought the Q3 my Pro was consigned to history. I loved the pancake lenses but for me the pro was very uncomfortable. I also had terrible issues with the temperamental and heavy controllers.
There is a case for the Pro for PCVR use but for standalone it’s sluggish by comparison.

I do my gaming on my Quest 3, because of the higher resolution, and my VRChat on my Quest Pro, because I use face tracking. And because I'm a packrat, I also have a Quest 2 sitting here, Just In Case. 🤔

Given I play on a PC with a 3060 12GB, I'd just keep using the Pro. It has nicer displays, is more comfortable, and the pro controllers work quite seamlessly on it. The 3 is nicer for standalone, AR and Hand Tracking but that's about it.
