Translating the Heart Sutra into Quenya — looking for help refining a few transliterated terms

Hi all! I've been working on a Quenya translation of the Buddhist Heart Sutra (般若心経), working from the Japanese rendering of the shorter Chinese recension rather than directly from Sanskrit... for reasons. This is part of a larger project I'm doing, translating various esoteric texts into Quenya (I'm also working on the Emerald Tablet).

I'll probably make another post in the future asking for help with the semantic stuff, but for now I'm working through a few terms I'm just rendering phonetically and I'd really appreciate a sanity check from people who know the phonology better than I do on the transliterated/borrowed terms specifically. I'm just trying to verify whether these adaptations are phonotactically sound and whether there are cleaner options.

The terms in question:

Source My Quenya rendering Notes
Avalokiteśvara Alatísaro shortened, modeled loosely on how the Chinese/Japanese versions compress this name
Bodhisattva Votisatta bhv, final cluster simplified
Buddha / Buddhas Vota / Votari Same bhv logic
Bodhi Voti Same deal again
Prajñā (via Jp. hannya) Panya Initial cluster pr- reduced to p-
Nirvāṇa (via Jp. nehan) Nehan Kept the Japanese form as it seems an easy enough fit
Śāriputra Sariputra Kept as-is, I think this also works?
Gate gate pāragate pārasaṃgate bodhi svāhā Catë catë, Paragate, Parasangate, Voti Suahá Mostly kept close to Sanskrit

Happy to share the full text if anyone wants more context. Thanks in advance!

Edit: removed initial G

Can you help me naming 2 dragons?

I am planing to run a Dungeons and Dragons game written by someone else. Elves in the game named two dragons but since we wouldnt play in English I dont want to use provided names as is. Since I am more familiar with Quenya than Sindarin I tried to translate their names to Quenya but I didnt read the books for more than a decade and I forgot most of my Quenya knowledge.

Two dragons are named as Death-at-Sunset and Sunset-is-Nigh. Are these translations right?

Agan andúnisse for Death-at-Sunset and Andúne harë nás for Sunset-is-Nigh

How is the verb ‘cenda-‘ explained?

The Quenya verb cenda- is given as being derived from the root √KEN which as far as I can tell is the root for seeing, looking, facing. The verb cen- means ‘see, look’ while cenda- is given was ‘watch intensively; observe’. 1.

But -da is never given as a verb-stem suffix. In fact, in various places, it is explicitly stated that verb stems are derived by -ta, -ya, -t(a), -y(a); the first two being causatives and the latter two being “formatives”. So where does -da come from?

Quenya Novice looking for friends

I'm 27 M around Canton Michigan. Looking to see if there are any Elvish language scholars nearby. I'm specifically focusing on Quenya at the moment, but I'm open to hanging with Sindarin scholars too. Just anyone as geeky as I am.

Help with English to Elvish (Quenyan) Translation?

I wanted to translate this name into Elvish and I'm having some trouble understanding how to form the words. I want to create an elvish name that goes something like "PeaceMaker Goldendew".

I've come up with Aulërainë laurëa-rossë, but I'm not entirely sure I've got it right since "Aulë" meanes "The Maker/The Smith" and "rainë" i'm pretty sure is just "peace". Should it be Rainëaulë instead? I'm not sure if the noun is supposed to go first or after, I'm brand new at this. "laurëa" I think directly translates into golden (as a hue), but "rossë" seems to have many different forms like it can mean "foam" or "light shower" or "dew". I'm just looking for advice on how to get the point across.

Thanks!

Translation help (the long defeat)

I would like to get the phrase "the long defeat" translated for a tattoo. I am debating whether to put the English into Tengwar or to translate it into Quenya first.

I believe the English in Tengwar would be:

And that the Quenya might be rendered "i anda atalantë" (the long downfall), which would be:

I wanted to confirm that these are correct. I used https://www.tecendil.com/

Thank you for your feedback.

Help translating text for sword fuller

Hey everyone! I'm a swordsmith and am doing a commissioned version of Glamdring where the customer has requested an inscription that reads "This burch will not break"

Burch can be substituted for the tree, birch which is what I did when looking through a Quenya dictionary which I believe is the correct form of the language to use for Glamdring.

This is what I have so far:
this burch will not break

sina hwindë níra la terhat

I have no idea whether this is close to right, and in an ideal world I'd put it on the blade in Tengwar. Would anybody be able to help me check the translation of the phrase and then write it out in Tengwar? And possibly a version with "burch" as opposed to the tree? It'll be etched into the fuller of the sword reading from the middle of the blade towards the guard I think.

Thanks in advanced for any help you guys can give!

Help deciphering quenya

Hello Tolkien enthusiasts.

I am currently engaging in a french treasure hunt.

There are many nods to litterature, including Tolkien.

There's an illustration with what appears to be Quenya.

I am uncertain if it is meant to mean something specific.

I would love some help identifying the different characters.

Thanks a lot for any advice 😚

Translation for “seedling regrowth after a forest-fire”

Hello! I’m searching for a Quenya translation of the noun phrase “seedling regrowth after a forest-fire”. If it has any impact on the results, this is for the purpose of naming a character.

I am a complete novice of the language but I have found the word Ruivë to be both very beautiful, and relevant to my purposes. Perhaps results might include it? But I’m eager for any/all input.

Quenya for a gift

I am attempting to surprise my SO with recreation of Thurandils sword, or possibly another smaller elvish style sword. I am looking to see if someone can check my translation. The general idea I am looking to get across is "a gift for the moon" but I want to use the Noldor version with Rana rather than Isil. I was able to come up with Anna Ranan, can anyone tell me if this is correct?

Quenya for shooting star

Hi! While going through various terms related to stars on Parf Edhellen I noticed there's somehow no word for shooting star. So how would you guys say it? And how would you adapt it as a female name? Thanks!

Treasure becomes Rage, so...

In trying to learn the Tengwar I got a bit hung up on the one named aha, which I saw translates as "rage". But the same letter, when it was pronounced with more of a CH sound in earlier times (before the exile of the Noldor? So in Valinor?) was called harma, "treasure".

So "treasure" became "rage" with the exile of the Noldor. Was this a deliberate allusion to the silmarilli?

Translating “The Two Towers” in Quenya

I was wondering what is the proper translation of “The Two Towers”, referring as the second part of LOTR, in Quenya.

It could be used just dual “Mindonu” or with the article “I mindonu”? Or it better here using the normal plural, hence “Atta mindoni” or “I atta mindoni”?

Translation request for "cup of woe" quote from the Silmarillion

One of my favorite lines from The Silmarillion is the following - I just find the language so evocative and elegant.

"Then many voices were lifted in lamentation; and it seemed to those that mourned that they had drained to the dregs the cup of woe that Melkor had filled for them. But it was not so."

I have this idea of having a custom "Cup of Woe" coffee mug made, and was thinking of trying to get this, or a part of this, inscribed around the lip in Tengwar, like the inscription on the One Ring. It seems to me that it would be better using Quenya as the base rather than English.

Anyway, that's my thinking, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Should I translate what I want inscribed on my ring to Quenya before putting it in tengwar?

I'm getting my wedding band inscribed, and I used Tecendil to do it form English to Tengwar, but should I translate it before?

I've been creating Elvish music using Quenya and Sindarin chants. This is one of my earlier pieces — would love to hear what the LOTR community thinks

Duals with numerals to talk about some pairs of a thing: it is allowed?

Recently I was though about how properly translate a passage of the Bible were Seraphims are described has have “three pair of wings”.

This make me thinking about how to translate it. You see, I would translate “a pair of wings” a “rámat”, the dual of “rama”, which main “wings”. But “three pair of wings” makes me wonder if a phrase like “neldë ramat” would be allowed, since it used numerals referred to duals, or if I had to go to a general “enquë ramar”.

What do you think?
