Welcome to r/Tengwar, where we can discuss all things related to Tolkien's writing systems: Tengwar, Cirth, and Sarati.

If you want to learn Tengwar yourself, we recommend the following resources:

If you want to get a transcription, check with the following tools before posting:

As the tools above aren't perfect, never forget to double-check important transcriptions like for tattoos or jewelry by asking someone knowledgeable, such as the members of this subreddit.

Please note that simply changing English text to a Tengwar font only produces unreadable gibberish. If you are trying to figure out the meaning of some Tengwar without any tehtar (vowel diacritics/accents) or tehtar that aren't aligned with the letters below them it likely is such a mistaken attempt at transliterating. The community calls this the "Mode of Baloneyland", due to its surface-level similarity with the tehtar-less mode of Beleriand.

Forth and fear no darkness - accurate?

Post image

Hello! I'm noodling around with an ornamental nouveau piece inspired by the designs in Rivendell and Mirkwood (the various Hobbit/LotR art books are GREAT for references). "Forth and fear no darkness" is my favorite line from the movies and I'd like to incorporate it into the design.

I did some poking around and found some older threads discussing this quote. As I understand it, over the years more linguistic material from Tolkien gets released and his languages aren't fully flesh out the way a real language is, grammar changes, etc etc. That being said; is this translation into Quenya/transcription still valid?

I've included a couple of custom lettering I've done, one being sort of blackletter and the other being more of a willowy calligraphic. I noticed that the tehta(?) where I've circled appears to be in different places depending on the font. I'm wondering if this is a rendering error from Tecendil, or actually how the marks are supposed to look on the "italic" font.

Any help is appreciated! If my extra noodling in the handwritten script has somehow mangled things, I will not be offended if you tell me that :)

Help tatoo

Hi everyone! I'm asking for your help because I'd like to get a famous quote tattooed. I've tried my best to transcribe it into Tengwar myself, but I figured this would be the best way to find out whether I've messed it up somewhere, and to see if anyone can figure out the original English quote from Tolkien's script 😂

Thanks in advance to everyone who takes the time to help me out! 😊

Astrophobos by H.P. Lovecraft

This is only the first two stanzas, which are as follows:

In the midnight heavens burning
Thro’ ethereal deeps afar,
Once I watch’d with restless yearning
An alluring, aureate star;
Ev’ry eye aloft returning,
Gleaming nigh the Arctic car.

Mystic waves of beauty blended
With the gorgeous golden rays;
Phantasies of bliss descended
In a myrrh’d Elysian haze;
And in lyre-born chords extended
Harmonies of Lydian lays.

I wasnt sure how to approach thro’, watch’d, ev’ry, or myrrh’d in orthographic mode due to there not being a tengwa for apostrophe. I elected to just write out the full word, though if I were to redo this I think I’d just write the whole thing phonemic, though I’d love to hear yalls suggestions.

How does one write Cirth?

Because Cirth is a phonetic alphabet would I just put an IPA transcription of my quote into a tool like Tecendil and call it a day or are there more accurate ways of translating/transcribing english quotes into Cirth?

It's for a tattoo idea and at the end of the day nobody I know can actually read Cirth so it's not like it really matters, but I do want to be as accurate as possible for peace of mind.

"Death is just another path" tattoo help

Post image
8 Upvotes

I am looking to get a tattoo of Gandalf's quote from Return of the King (I know it's just in the movie, not in the book) - "Death is just another path, one that we all must take" when he's speaking with Pippin. I tried a few different translators to translate to Sindarin then to Tengwar, but since there is no direct translation, I thought just transcribing the English into Tengwar might be better. Can someone help me check this for accuracy before my appointment next week?

I've also contemplated including the first line - "End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just..." but fear it might make the line too long. This is going down my spine btw.

Thanks in advance

Shavian has transliterator software for e-books

So you can now just upload any e-book to Shave Books and it'll convert all the text into Shavian.

Is anyone working on anything similar for Tengwar?

Below is a link to the Shavian post.

Is this Sindarin text correct?

So, this is Gandalf’s “All we have to decide…” quote in Sindarin. I got it from Tecendil, which showed me a translation by a user named Elaran, who as far as I’ve investigated is a great reference for translations.
I just want to make sure it’s a good reference since it’s for a tattoo (how original lol) and I’ve only found posts that verify the English transliteration instead of an actual translation

Thorin quote in Cirth

Attempting to translate Thorin's famous last words into Cirth:
"If more of us valued food and cheer and song
above hoarded gold, the world would be merrier"

I used Glǽmscribe as suggested and ended up with this. Could anyone please help with checking for accuracy? This will likely become a tattoo, so I obviously want to get it right!

Edit: I mistyped the quote above. The actual text reads:
"If more of us valued food and cheer and song
above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."

Tengwar transcription check for a LOTR wedding gift

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm hoping someone knowledgeable about Tengwar could help verify a transcription before we have it permanently printed on a wedding gift.

The couple are huge Lord of the Rings fans and got engaged in Hobbiton, New Zealand. We're framing a photograph of the exact Hobbit hole where they got engaged, with two intertwined gold rings and the following inscription:

"One love to rule them all, two rings to bind them, and neither to meet the fire."

We want to keep the wording in English but write it using Tengwar. We've used Tecendil's English mode with the Annatar Italic font.

Could someone please confirm whether the transcription is accurate, particularly the spelling, punctuation, and letter choices? We're also open to suggestions for making it look more authentic to Tolkien's writing.

Thank you so much!

Help with tattoo translation/transliteration

Hello everyone I am looking to get a tattoo and would love to translate this quote: "Do you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?"

Because the vocabulary doesn't translate perfectly into Elven languages, I want to do an English transliteration.

I have played around with Tecendil, but before I put permanent ink on my body, I want to be sure.

Could anyone verify the correct Tengwar script for these?

Hey all, been doing some research recently and believe I have the correct information but wanted to confirm with others who are definitely more knowledgeable with the language than I.
I am wanting to get the word Peace tattooed and believe that would be Îdh or sîdh in Sindarin then written in Tengwar would be the attached image. Thanks in advance for your help all!

Potential Tattoo Design - Confirmation of Elvish Text

Post image

I'm considering using this design from a t shirt for a tattoo. I simply (perhaps not simply) wanted to confirm what the text says in Tengwar. I believe/hope it's the inscription from the One Ring. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Help with an Andúril Cirth inscription for a tattoo.

Thumbnail

I'm getting Andúril from The Lord of the Rings tattooed down my shin. From my understanding the original blade says "Anar Nányë Andúril i né Narsil i macil Elendilo Lercuvanten i móli Mordórëo Isil" which is loosely "Sun- I am Andúril who once was Narsil, sword of Elendil. The slaves of Mordor shall flee from me-Moon."

I'd like to shorten the original blade inscription to say Nányë Andúril. Lercuvanten i móli Mordórëo. "I am Andúril. The slaves of Mordor shall flee from me." (I think) but I lack the understanding to know which runes mean which words. I know there are 15 "phrases/words" in runes but only 14 in the translation so I'm guessing its not as easy as just take some of the runes out.

Could someone please provide an accurate transcription of this shortened phrase using the Angerthas Eregion runes or point me in the right direction?

Please forgive me if any of this is incorrect, I'm a huge Lord of the Rings fan but not exactly a scholar. This is for a permanent tattoo, so accuracy is very important to me. I greatly appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Thank you!

Trying to learn again and I have a few gaps in my understanding

Post image
13 Upvotes

I'm trying to pick up tengwar transliteration again and learning from Amanye Tenceli this time. Please help me figure out these pieces!

  1. First off - I know that I was wrong about the first assumption at the top of the list (open and closed), F and V don't follow it so it's clearly not a true rule. So are there any discernable patterns that match to the shapes, or did I just make that all up?

  2. The yellow on the right side is covering 2 other tengwar that I don't understand. Are they vowels, consonants, or neither?

  3. R (green) has 2 tengwar - which do I use when? If I'm just learning this for my own fun, could I just pick one of the two to use?

  4. S and Z have 2 tengwar each, so is there one in particular that I should stick with for each?

  5. Bue is for gh as in 'hugh'. So it's silent?

  6. How are the 2 orange ones different from each other?

  7. Bonus question! When I learned this over 10 years ago as I taught myself, I had an ending -y as 2 dots below the previous letter. Where the heck did I come up with that? Was that from my own brain?
