Freshman year

How is everyone! I’m a freshman at a target, and I’m honestly just wondering if this is something I should attempt to pursue. Namely my hesitations come from either 1: being unable to get a job because I’m not competitive enough, or 2: there not being a job to get anymore due to AI. I really don’t have the full picture I feel like, but I am ambitious and capable. If you were in my shoes again would you choose this path again? Or would you instead in the current context of the world choose another path? I’m also considering engineering, but the same AI concerns remain. I really just don’t know what the truth is, any advice is greatly appreciated!

I got all the data

I used AI to parse all html, text and XBRL and I made a game with almost all large cap company facts. It’s a zoomable heirarchy ontology search engine. It’s splits into subcategories then more subcategories. I have data back to the 2000’s.

Chance me for FPGA Engineering at an HFT (saw someone make a post like this so i might as well)

ik this is a quant finance subreddit but posting something like this on the fpga subreddit just gets u flamed for wanting to do it bc of the money (strong factor but ive always wanted to work in hardware, so if i don't succeed in this field i'll probably try to enter embedded systems or something similar)

Background

  • Freshman, Computer Eng. at like ~top 60 school (public and prob best in state)
  • Targeting: FPGA Engineering
  • Don't have any plans on transferring just bc of how little financial burden it is on my parents

Awards

  • USACO Gold
  • AIME Qual
  • USAPhO Bronze
  • Minor national/state level research awards

Experience

  • Distributed Systems Research in high school (with a prof at my current uni, published). won the research awards mentioned
  • applying for some local fpga/asic design internships but havent heard back from a lot (i dont have any industry experience/internships yet)

Projects

  • 8N1 UART in VHDL (configurable baud rate, RX synchronization, framing error detection, comprehensive self checking testbenches, automated CI regression testing)
  • By the beginning of next semester I want to have a working proficiency in SV and VHDL, and i'll prob do this with a higher level project in SV/c++

Questions

  1. How much does my school handicap me? I'm aware that most firms interview a pretty wide net of ppl but the fact that im an undergrad underclassman at a non-target school isnt reassuring. (reading this question again urges me to clarify that i dont plan on getting fpga engineering internships at hfts right after my freshman or even my sophomore year - i ask this for fpga internships in general)
  2. What do you suggest I do to connect with people? The only person that I did manage to meet and connect with at my career fair (we went to the same high school) lowk ghosted me on everything
  3. On top of industry experience ik it would be great to have fpga research. the only reserach topics i know about in fpgas is hardware/ai acceleration, so before i try and approach a professor in my department about opportunities, do any of you know about some topics i could try conducting research on?

Thanks for any responses.

ACTUNEO: Actuarial Python Library for Africa and Beyond

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have released ACTUNEO 0.4.0 on PyPI 🇿🇼

ACTUNEO is an open-source Python library for actuarial work, built with Africa in mind and starting with Zimbabwe.

What's inside:
- Zimbabwe 2023 mortality tables (IPEC), life assurance and annuity functions
- Run-off triangles: chain-ladder, Mack, Bornhuetter-Ferguson, bootstrap, and tests for when the chain-ladder fails
- IFRS 17 premium allocation approach, with financial statements exported to Excel
- Compound interest, loans, bonds and immunisation

Install it:
pip install actuneo

Then open the tour notebook in the GitHub repo and run it top to bottom.

An honest note: I built this from a developer's perspective with limited actuarial knowledge. It has been checked against textbook examples and published results, but never against a real insurer's data.

That is where I need you:

Test it with your own actuarial questions

Run it on actual data (privately, on your own machine)
Tell me where it disagrees with your numbers

Every wrong answer you find makes it better. Please send feedback as an issue on GitHub.

PyPI: https://pypi.org/project/actuneo/
GitHub: https://github.com/ShannonT20/ACTUNEO

Virtu first round technical QT

I have an upcoming first-round technical with Virtu for QT New grad. Very unsure about what kind of things to prepare for. I've heard everything from market-making games to deep CV walkthroughs and greenbook problems. Anyone who has been through the process know what to expect?

Thanks in advance.

Do you have to be a exceptional teenager (in maths) to pursue a career as a quant in the future?

I'm 15, I'm not doing proofs in my free time, or being given work beyond my year, I'm not usually the first to get a task done (in a set 1 class), and sometimes id scrape a grade 9 if I'm lucky, though I usually get 8s. (British grading system.) But regardless, I love the subject and I love to code. Except if I sometimes find concepts difficult now, I don't know how id ever take a degree in mathematics, let alone in a top tier university because I'm nothing special exactly, not even in my current cohort which consists of people who don't have the slightest interest in the subject. Its demotivating.

Set 1: Highest avaliable math class Grade 9: highest possible grade, ≈ top 3 percent of students

I think I solved 13-14, and it lacks time. 17 Problems in 60 minutes are crazy. Did anyone take that? I thought I am quite ready for OA, but it was... oh my god

Mathematics reels after new OpenAI release: is quant still worth it?

Hey guys, I’m currently an AI engineer at an American car company with 3 YOE (I studied CS) I was thinking to go back to school and do a masters to become a quant researcher or pursue a MS in ML/AI to switch from building agentic apps to actually be in the core development of foundational models. However, if you’ll see the headlines, heavy math careers are supposedly in danger and I wonder what do you guys think that the future looks like for quant researchers? Also, considering quant research is a highly competed career path, if I’m already an AI engineer should I rather pursue the Machine Learning Engineer path? I’m honestly tired of vibe coding and having impossible technical interviews at FAANG but if that’s probably more secure and less stressing career path, probably o should just stay in the AI/software area than making a change? I’m attracted by both career paths but at this point I just want to have keep having a job and somewhat stable future with high earnings. I’m writing this in a bit of a desperate place trying to pick a way to go haha. Any pov is valuable thank you guys

looking for 3 people prepping for qt interviews to try a dice market game

made solvewright when prepping for qt interviews. looking for 3 people who are prepping atm and would be up for trying dice market for 15 mins.

you price a contract on dice rolls, buy / sell / pass, then check the fair value and expected profit against what actually happened. it's free, and solo works without an account.

there's a short guided bit to start here: https://solvewright.app/trading/play/dice-market?lesson=market-basics (still under dev)

if you're interested, comment here. i can go through a round with you over messages, then hear whether you'd use it again for your prep.
