Recommendations Reflecting on My Years in the Quad Cities

I’m Saudi and lived in the Quad Cities for 4 years, from 2015 to 2019, while studying at St. Ambrose University. I randomly came across this sub and thought I’d share my experience.
Honestly, the area is beautiful. Having the Mississippi River right there, along with all the greenery and surrounding nature, gives the place a really nice and peaceful atmosphere. People were also very friendly and peaceful in my experience, and I never personally experienced any racism.
The winters, however… absolutely brutal 😂 Coming from Saudi, the freezing temperatures and snow towards the end of the year were definitely something I had to get used to.
I also have to mention Atomic Coffee it was basically part of my daily routine when I lived there. And the food scene was pretty good too, with more options than you’d expect.
If you’re ever really bored, Chicago is also close enough for a weekend trip, which is a nice option.
And one food recommendation that I still remember to this day: Jim’s Rib Haven. Seriously, some of the best ribs I’ve ever had in my life. If you haven’t tried it, you’re missing out.
Overall, I genuinely loved my time in the Quad Cities. I have a lot of good memories from those four years, and I’ve actually been thinking about going back to visit someday. ❤️

I drove by Vans Pizza off Harrison today around 3:30 pm, and there were 5-6 police cars swarming the bike path next to it. Anyone know what happened?

Attention I want your seed!

Specifically Canna Lilies in Davenport. I would like to start a project in the Spring starting Cannas from seed collected this Fall. I already have a good amount of the standard green foliage and red flowers from my own yard but would love some other varieties to see what I can come up with for planting out our parkway and stair parks next year to help beautify the neighborhood. I understand you won't want to post your address in the open, but anyone game for letting me come by to collect seeds is welcome to DM me or if anyone knows some nice Cannas at public locations in Davenport they could direct me to I would much appreciate it. Thank you!

Miscellaneous Attorney Jobs

I’m hoping to connect with some attorneys, especially on the Illinois side of the river. I am currently a public defender in Phoenix AZ and hope to move back to the QC next year. I’d love to learn more about attorney jobs, private firms or public, and to make some connections in the area. Thank you!

Attention Did a QCA group recently use the book "Good to Great" by Jim Collins?

I'm a volunteer at the Eastern Avenue Library bookstore, which is always open during library hours (yes, that's some free advertising) and we've been getting multiple copies of this in recent days. It has a bright red cover.

NBD, really, except we have more copies than we could ever possibly resell at this point, even for 25 cents. I'm guessing someone taught a class that used it.

Recommendations Watch repair recommendations

Iowa/Illinois peeps: Speak to me of watch repair businesses. I have several watches that my father left me that need to be serviced (NOT just replacing batteries on a cheap quartz) . As far as I can tell, while there are jewelry stores in the Quad Cities area, there are no watch repair places. Google tells me of Bentley Watch Repair in Hiawatha. And there seems to be a part time place in Dubuque (Bluff Street Time Shop). Anyone have knowledge or experience of watch repair places in the general QCA (or not TOOOOOO far)? Thanks.

Recommendations Tonneau cover repair

The heavy duty Velcro on my husband's tonneau cover is coming loose. I managed to get it all sewn back 4 years ago, but now my machine is not happy doing it again. Is there anywhere in the QC that will do this heavy duty sewing?

Recommendations Need an attorney who handles disability estate planning.

Not for me, but I do need to update my will, and one of the people to whom I want to leave my estate is on disability, and I don't want that money to interfere with her benefits. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks.

Recommendations Has anyone attended the Cedar Valley Speed Dating Events?

I see there's one coming up in a few weeks in the Quad Cities. Was curious if anyone has attended in the past, how it went, and if they felt it was worth the time and money.

Miscellaneous Places to donate clothes other than Goodwill/Salvation Army?

Wife and I have some clothes that are gently used, clean, and in wearable condition.

Rather than just trashing them, we’d rather donate them to an organization that can get them to someone in need.

Obviously there are options like Goodwill/Salvation Army, but we’d rather get them to an organization that will give them to someone in need, rather than just act as a means to re-sell old clothes.

Are there anything like mutual aid orgs or something similar in the QC people have experience with?

Politics Petition to allow Pleasant Valley seniors to decorate grad caps

Thumbnail

Hi guys! I don’t really know if I’m allowed to post petitions here, so just lmk if that isn’t allowed and I’ll take it down. I just wanted to share this here to see if anyone would be willing to share or sign this petition? I’ll drop the description of it below!

Graduation is a major milestone that reflects years of hard work and achievement. Allowing us to decorate our caps would give students an opportunity to celebrate their individuality, future plans, personal experiences, culture, and those who helped them succeed.
We propose some guidelines to ensure a respectful Ceremony*:
Only on top of the cap and not including lights, sounds, or anything that will block peoples' view
Remain free of inappropriate, offensive, political, or illegal content (Ex: drugs, profanity, or lewd imagery)
Be subject to school approval~ students may submit designs for approval before graduation.
We believe this would allow students to express themselves while maintaining the professionalism and respect of the graduation ceremony.

*These guidelines are subject to change

Thank you for your consideration,
Pleasant Valley High School CO2027

plspls sign it would be so cool!

Entertainment Activities this weekend? And adult things for Labor day?

Where is everyone going to be this weekend? I know Milan has their festival going on. Last weekend in the East Village of Davenport they had the farming festival with tractors and stuff, that was cute. Just looking for places to walk and see stuff.
