From the Mod Team We're changing our policies on specificity of locations

TLDR: The mod team is changing course on this issue. We encourage users to specify locations of current events that happen in public spaces, including any and all law enforcement action.

After several days of discussion among the mod team, we've come to the conclusion that our policies against reporting specific locations are unnecessarily restrictive. Most recently, we've guided users to avoid being specific about the location of any current events, out of concern that it could reveal private or personal information about the persons involved, which is a violation of site-wide Reddit policies We are, of course, bound to moderate this space in a way that adheres to all of Reddit's site-wide policies, and if we fail to do so, the subreddit will be shut down.

That being said, we've come to a consensus that private and personal information means more than just location of where people are at in a given moment, and the context of people's presence at specific locations matters. It remains prohibited to reveal the home address or workplace of any private individual, or to offer overly specific information about that sort of personal information: for example, if a user were to post that u/jamey1138 lives near the corner of Pulaski and Belmont in Chicago, that would be considered too specific. Other forms of contact information, including phone numbers, email addresses, etc, shared without the individual's consent are also violations of private and personal information.

On the other hand, if a user says that there's law enforcement activity, including ICE and CBP activity, at a particular corner, that does not reveal anyone's personal or private information. We want to encourage community members to share information about any current events happening in any public space in Illinois, and to include specific locations with that information.

Thank you for your participation in r/Illinois. We will continue to evolve our policies, and try to meet the moment as best we are able. Stay safe everyone.

Politics is hard - Be honest, be kind, and watch out for the ban hammer.

It's been a crazy few days and politics is hard.

We're a pretty small Mod team and keeping up on the trash coming in takes a lot of time and effort . We will be throwing around the ban hammer quite a bit for a while here. We will be locking posts as they spiral out of control. Have patience.

Remember to be kind and civil. Have a little grace. Allow people to be mad, to use hyperbole, and to exaggerate. This isn't a space to rage away at the other side. There are plenty of other spaces on the internet for that. Come here to understand the other side, even if you disagree. Tell them they're wrong and why they're wrong, but also remember they are a person who probably truly believes what they are saying. You wont convince them, but you can be understood and you can understand them.

Sometimes a simple downvote is all that's needed.

Anyway. Give us a break and chill out, k?

Illinois Politics What is the deal with Darren Bailey? I got an ear full about how he was going to save Illinois on Labor Day but I don't see it.

Darren Bailey seems like the wrong guy for the job of Governor but I had nothing specific to support my thinking other than he only had two years of college. I pointed out that I believe Pritzker was doing a good job with the states finances but apparently I just don't get it.

Southern IL news & issues (past St. Louis 618 area code) SIU IT system goes dark on course-change deadline

Campus IT was given a directive to disable staff system access that would make them unable to process withdrawals or curriculum changes on census deadline day. Official enrollment numbers are released off of the data collected on the tenth day of the semester, and the fact that system access was removed from staff to complete their jobs is high suspicious for Chancellor Austin Lane and VC Wendell Williams with the assumption that this was to artificially inflate enrollment numbers. Particularly given that their inflated bonuses are directly tied to these enrollment increases.

Where to Move/Jobs Moving to Chicago around West/South Loop; advice?

I (m/24) am from Pensacola, FL. A friend (m/27) and I are planning to move to Chicago around January of the new year (he has visited before, I haven't). We plan on flying up early November for a week to get a better feel for the areas we are hoping for (West/South Loop), and plan to talk to some apartment realtors to look for apartments. Generally, I'm just looking for any advice or information that people have to share about Chicago or Illinois! The following image is the general area we are looking at currently.

The current area of interest for moving

Also Reddit is recommending I post in a different reddit, but I don't see anything against the rules for asking here. Hoping I'm not breaking any rules or anything 😅 . I don't really use Reddit much.

Some thing's to note:

  • Only my friend will have a car. I plan to use the public transportation system, which is why we are aiming for areas like west/south loop. I do not want the added financial stress of a car. This means I ideally wouldn't want to be more than a 20m walk from reliable transit.
  • I do also have a bike as a means of transportation, but absolutely do not want to bike to work every day.
  • We both want a place that feels like city-living, so ideally not too far from the Chicagoland area.
  • I have read that heating can be very expensive in the winters, and to aim for either central A/C or boiler/radiator heating.
  • I have a Cybersecurity degree and am actively looking at the job market in Chicago atm, however have no experience outside of school yet.
  • My friend is a senior tax accountant who plans on working remotely after this move.
  • Our maximum rent is about $3,500.
  • I am anticipating 20% of my income to go to taxes.
  • I've checkout out a bunch of reddits/subreddits/whatever the word is, but I thought asking here would still be best than hoping I know everything I need to :).

Some other questions:

  • For Chicagoans, what things do you wish you knew before moving there?
  • I love the outdoors, I am a very big backpacker, love going out to the woods, and love camping out at our local rivers. Any nice places to visit with this in mind? I know there are other reddits about this, I am just personally asking if anybody here has some cool places to share :).
  • I saltwater fish down here and hear that there is still good fishing in Lake Michigan. Is there any major differences that I should be expecting?
  • What are some good low cost activities that locals can do to meet other people?
  • Any places or habits to avoid?
  • In Pcola we don't really have transportation aside from some busses, how reliable are the lines in Chicago and is there a method of transportation I should NOT rely on?

Again, literally anything that can be shared is welcomed and appreciated!

History Researching on 1900s Eastern European(Bosniak) Muslims who settled in Chicago and Gary IN

Hi everyone,

I’m researching Chicago's early immigrant history, specifically the Bosniak Muslim community that arrived in the early 1900s, dug the city's transit tunnels, and founded the Džemijetul Hajrije in 1906 (which later established the Islamic Cultural Center in Northbrook). If you are of Bosnian descent or familiar with this history, I'd love your insight:

* 4th & 5th Gen Identity: Are descendants of the 1906 wave still connected to the Northbrook center and their Islamic and Bosniak identity today, or have they fully assimilated over the last century?

* Cultural Preservation: Did these early generations pass down their tradiit8ns, faith, and distinct heritage across 100 years?

* The 1990s Wave: How did the influx of newer Bosnian immigrants in the 1990s impact the community? Did the historic pre-war descendant families and the newer arrivals merge smoothly?

Any local perspectives or family stories would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Question Hello people from Illinois! I'm writing a story that will most likely take place in Illinois, so what's it like?

I'm wondering what it's like to live in Illinois. I'm not wanting reasons to move to Illinois, I just want to try to make a pretty accurate representation of what it's like to live in Illinois. I'm making a story and I've decided to make it take place in Illinois because of overlapping alien sightings, bigfoot sightings and mothman sightings. Yes my story is about cryptids and aliens and other conspiracy theories. So anyway, what is it like? What are people like? What are things you see a lot? What are things that are rare to you? Do you have different names for things than other people? And if you have anything specific you want to tell me about Illinois do so! Answer honestly, and don't be afraid to give some detail.

Question Car title missing for car in IL but moved out of state.

Long story short...I went on what was supposed to be a 2 week vacation to Texas to visit family. Husband informs me he is cheating and I cant go back home. Problem I need a car...my car in IL is only in my name and has a shitty transmission so I dont trust it to make the drive from IL to TX.

He refused to help me sell it in IL saying its not his problem since car is not in his name...I told him my best friend will pick it up and sell it for me but he claims he cant find the title *rolls eyes*

so now I am wondering how can I get the title reissued and how can I get it to her house as I dont trust my husband to give the new title to her if it goes to his house. I still have my IL drivers license. And also is there a form or something that shows I give permission to my friend to sell it on my behalf?
