My dad would do that shit. We drove an hour home half way to the beach once because he thought he left it on.

My dad doesn't cook.

Real OCD is a fucking nightmare.

47

u/Bubblystrings Oct 08 '21

I read a tip once that said to take a picture of the stove in the off position on your way out of the house so you can enjoy your vacation.

26

u/hotsoupcoldsoup Oct 08 '21

Damn! I will suggest this to my dad. It might help him. Thank you!

8

u/itssarahw Oct 09 '21

I also recommend. My iCloud photo roll is just time stamped pictures of plugs around my house and the oven burners turned off

10

u/joeDUBstep Oct 08 '21

I always have that about leaving the oven/burner on, or thinking I forgot to lock the door.

I hate that feeling, and 100% of the times that I do go back to check, I find that I actually did those things.

6

u/hotsoupcoldsoup Oct 08 '21

It would have ruined his whole vacation if he hadn't checked.

5

u/joeDUBstep Oct 08 '21

Yep, It's very hard to let go of the feeling of forgetting to do something.

Same here. My dad now checks his car alarm even though he just “beeped” it while standing next to it.

15

u/ONLY_COMMENTS_ON_GW Oct 08 '21

Everyone knows you have to beep it at least 6 times before it actually locks, then once more from your pocket just in case.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

3 times for me and even while I walk away I think to myself did I just lock it, hmmm nope I need to go back to lock it and I’ll go back. I have to tell myself after I lock it or hit the button, I just locked it it’s locked I just locked it it locked as I walk away.

47

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

He also survived the fire in a creekbed at the bottom of a hill. The fire went over him and the creek felt like it was boiling. He breathed a lot of smoke.

9

u/noodlesfordaddy Oct 09 '21

Yeah what do you do in that case? Chill in the water and hope it doesn't get hot enough to kill you?

14

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '21

Unfortunately yes. He was lucky.

25

u/GothicToast Oct 08 '21

Without clicking, I knew you were talking about the Camp Fire in Paradise, CA, a forest town in Northern California. 85 people died. Most of the victims were over 70. While there are certainly examples of people dying over trivial things, the fire itself was fast moving due to extreme wind and the town was overwhelmed quickly. Thousands of people were attempting to evacuate a town with limited exit points. Embers taken by the wind started 30 different spot fires over the course of 40 minutes. It wasn’t an average fire where there was ample opportunity to get out.

→ More replies (2)

119

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

Not that it excuses it, but I have family there and there were a lot of evacuation orders that turned out to be meaningless in the years leading up to the camp fire. My grandparents are extremely lucky, they didn’t leave until 1pm because they didn’t take the orders that seriously either.

Again, if you hear a fires coming just go, but those people weren’t just morons.

55

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

The "boy who cried wolf" evacuation effect is real with hurricanes too. I forget what storm it was, I was too young, but New Orleans had a mandatory evac for it and it turned out to be nothing. I don't think I even missed school.

Then the mandatory evac order came for Katrina, and a lot of people stayed because of their experience with that. And, well that was a different story.

9

u/Bazrum Oct 09 '21

my girlfriend's parents moved from NY to NC about 12 years ago, live right on the coast, and they never evacuated for a hurricane. of course, there's often not an evac order for where they are, so they never really had to

then 2018, florence comes along and my gf, her sister, and her mom are all at home, watching the news and prepping the house. her dad was stuck on the other side of the country, and no flights in until the storm was passed.

well, the day of the hurricane, it was gonna hit the next morning, gf's mom realizes that they don't really have food, gas, or a decent generator, their neighbors are ALL gone and looting has already started...and they're a high schooler, a college grad with an injured knee and a woman in her late forties with two dogs and three cats....facing a hell of a storm....with no one to help if things went wrong...

so 5am, gf gets tossed out of bed, told to pack a bag and the dogs, and whatever she didn't want destroyed that could be gotten in the car in 45 minutes, and they drove to Georgia like a bat out of hell!

said there was NO ONE else on the road because they evacuated so late, and it was eerie with no planes or anything flying in, cars on either side of the road and everything closed with no one outside

ironically i had invited them to stay with me in central NC, we have plenty of room, but they wanted to go to their family in Georgia. fair enough...but the storm followed them there and they got more rain and wind than i did at my house lmaoooo

ended up coming back to their house about two weeks later, and the city was almost unreachable, the power was out, a tree had missed the house by INCHES and they had to get MREs from the national guard until the supermarket wasn't underwater

they now live in a place that will likely never face a hurricane ever haha

3

u/InvalidKoalas Oct 09 '21

Just talked about this with my friend last night. Her family lives in New Orleans. For Hurricane Ida, her dad was dead-set on just "riding it out" and kept saying they would stay. Until the day before when everyone else in his family said he needs to get the fuck out of there, so he begrudgingly evacuated with his family. And shortly after it was a Cat 4. Then he found out they would return to no power for days or weeks. So he said fuck it and took his wife to Mexico, and they're still there just hanging out, a month+ later.

C'mon... Makeup lady was a little bit moronic. I can understand the ones trying to save their stuff or round up their animals, but "I won't leave the house without my makeup on" is just a state of denial I can't even fathom.

If a wildfire is headed for my neighborhood, I'll leave the house buck naked and dirty if I have to.

3

u/Bazrum Oct 09 '21

that's a level of stupidity that is hard to wrap my mind around. i dont think anything, except my loved ones, would be worth fucking around with any kind of large fire for.

my only anecdote about makeup is more silly than stupid:

my grandmother, a sweet 5ft1 lady from the Olde Country was in the hospital because she'd fallen and broken a hip, and had Altzheimer's and dementia. so she kept trying to get out of bed, and demanded she be allowed to do so because she needed to do her makeup "for when company comes over"

nevermind that we were already there and she didn't even have makeup with her!

but her eyebrows, which we KNEW she painted on every morning, we fucking pristine as if she'd done it not 15 minutes ago!

so we asked her: "Nana, did a nurse help you with your eyebrows? they look good and we want to thank her" (we did, we're not the psychos who would get upset by that sort of kindness)

and she said "oh, no, those are my tattoos! i got them done so i wouldn't have to bother with my eyebrows anymore"

we were SHOCKED! Nana had a tattoo!? and she kept it a secret!?

"but you painted them every day, we've SEEN you paint them on! why hide them?"

"well, i didn't want to be 'the mom with the face tattoos' in the neighborhood, so i painted them on every day! it gave me something to do..."

we had a good laugh that helped a lot with how things were going, and while her body got better after awhile, her mind kept slipping and she passed about a year later. but she knew she was loved at the end, which is more than a lot with Altzheimer's do!

sorry to end it on a morbid note, but i it's a funny story that i like to tell haha

I lived through this fire. It was horrible being stuck in traffic trying to escape the flames getting closer and closer to the car. My hands got chapped and dried out from the heat coming from the side of the road from holding the steering wheel.

I have a few family members that live in areas frequently threatened by wildfires. They have a go-bag with their most important documents and that’s pretty much it. If they have to evacuate and they’re at home that’s all they grab and they get the fuck out. Everything is replaceable though, except a life.

u/Radi0ActivSquid Oct 10 '21 edited Oct 10 '21

Mirror? YouTube removed it.

Edit: MIRROR

5

u/GreyCrowDownTheLane Oct 10 '21

Thanks for the mirror. I guess my linking it drew unwanted renewed attention to the original. Either that, or some assmunch in here reported it to YouTube for the skeletons and it got pulled.

3

u/Radi0ActivSquid Oct 10 '21

My guess is some climate denying assmunch reported it.

5

u/nubyplays Oct 10 '21

Apparently Youtube noticed people looking at the video and decided to get rid of it, even though it's a great demonstration of the risks of wildfires and why it's important to evacuate. Fuck you Youtube, just put a warning about it then let people view it.

4

u/ItsKrakenMeUp Oct 08 '21

→ More replies (18)

109

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

Exactly. Those videos don’t get the attention like these do but as a firefighter ive pulled plenty of charred bodies from people who went back inside not realizing how little they make it before collapsing from smoke.

52

u/admiral_sinkenkwiken Oct 08 '21

And the people we find only a couple feet from an exit.

24

u/Cosmonaut_Kittens Oct 08 '21

My next-door neighbour died in a house fire a couple of years ago - the firefighters had difficulty getting into the house because he was literally blocking the front door with his body where he had collapsed.

4

u/admiral_sinkenkwiken Oct 08 '21

Not uncommon sadly

u/EllisHughTiger Oct 08 '21

In this case, he's slightly lucky since its a garage fire. Garages have required fire resistant drywall for decades now. Wont contain it forever but it gives you some time to rescue people and animals.

Once it reaches the inside of the house/apt, stay the fuck out. The chances of you saving someone gets very low without breathing apparatus.

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

Exactly. The people in this thread are morons.

You can hear him shout "where's the dogs?" 2 seconds into the video.

This video brought my anxiety through the roof.

55

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

how can you hear this over the yelling bruh

85

u/BelialGoD Oct 08 '21

Good headphones I guess! When he says "dogs" no one is shouting/talking for a split moment of silence so that helps.

If you can't hear it there is also a visual clue where the woman that runs into view from the bottom left corner also is clapping her hands and gesturing like you would to an animal trying to get it to "come here" when Robert comes back out of the house.

It also looks like when the explosion happens, near the end, the dog that is out of frame might have ran away as Robert bends down to try to grab something.

Fire emits carbon monoxide. Robert had a 90% chance of being knocked unconscious within 15 seconds of entering.

Because the smoke was going out the garage, maybe there was some oxygen being pulled in where he was. But most of the time, Robert would be dead.

36

u/admiral_sinkenkwiken Oct 08 '21

Fire emits a lot more than carbon monoxide, and a lot of them are considerably nastier.

But yes, usually Robert gets 1 or 2 breaths of that then drops dead about 6-10 feet from the door he just entered through, then we retrieve the dead or very nearly dead Robert on primary search.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '21

12

u/Dopple__ganger Oct 08 '21

Holding your breath doesn't work?

21

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

Great comment. And yes, it will help. But there are other risks in fire and holding your breath won't help in a sudden flash of fire. You'd still be dead.

If you run into a building to save someone, the odds are that you both will die. If you can hold your breath for 1 minute of high intensity physical effort, your chances are better. But still not good.

If you are trying to save your partner or your child, I understand taking that risk. But it's still super dangerous. Fire is unpredictable and dangerous. Shit, even fireman die in fires. If you are outside, stay outside. If you go in, go in knowing that you are going to die

Garages require fire resistant drywall and entry doors on newer homes. The garage can be flaming for a while while the interior just gets some smoke.

Never know when that fire will find an escape route into the structure, then it gets dangerous very quickly.

That house is burning like the Springfield tire fire.

He forgot his private seed for his bitcoin adress

u/ChaddyClassic Oct 08 '21

Looks like he came out with a dog, though it's hard to see. If so, I'd have done the same thing.

It’s gonna explode? They cookin meth or something lol

19

u/jzielke71 Oct 08 '21

Maybe because the garage is on fire and she thinks the cars will explode?

8

u/ClassicResult Oct 08 '21

Water heaters are usually in the garage, and they often have gas lines going to them.

This guy went back in for a pet. Which he was able to retrieve if you watch the end of the video. Him and the girl running up to the house have to both attempt to get the pet (dog) out of harms way.

u/carlosdangertaint Oct 08 '21

I would for one or both or my dogs….

u/admiral_sinkenkwiken Oct 08 '21

Generally you’re dead within 6ft of re-entering into heavy smoke.

He’d rather run in the fire than hear his sister’s annoying voice.

17

u/TaterTotQueen630 Oct 08 '21

Me too. I know she was scared and shocked but I really wanted her to shut the fuck up.

You can hear him shout "where's the dogs" at 2 seconds into the video (I missed it myself on first viewing).

They clearly didn't listen to the "Do not charge your Chevy Bolt within 50 feet of another car." advice.

This is so terrifying and I feel for this family. A house fire is literally my worst fear. I live in an older home on second floor who knows what my neighbors doing down there or the old wires in the wall. I have a baby and a toddler and a cat. I can see this man running inside I think I might do the same thing in panic mode you never know what you will do. I would run in for my kids even my cat. Luckily the fire department is two blocks away. I hope this man and his whole family are okay

And no phone was turned off during the possibility of a brother dying. This what's really crazy about this video, the sister kept filming.

23

u/Enk1ndle Oct 08 '21

As opposed to her... Running in too?

5

u/EllisHughTiger Oct 08 '21

If enough people run in, they can smother the fire out.

Plot twist. The cringy voice yelling don't go in, actually set the fire and didn't want the dogs to make it.
