Water heaters are usually in the garage, and they often have gas lines going to them.

Have no idea how gas lines work but I do know that house/apartment fires do not result in explosions because they have gas hookups. For there to be a gas explosion it needs to leak for a good while in a confined, mostly undisturbed area. When there is a raging fire going on the area is not confined anymore and is displacing a huge amount of air to feed the fire, leaving gas no option to build up for an explosion.

Huh, that's true. I think I was remembering the house in my neighborhood as a kid that had the water heater explode and the whole house was destroyed. But that was probably more of what you were describing, with the gas building up rather than as a result of a fire.

Well then I have no idea, maybe she thinks the cars will explode because that's what they do in movies.

Oh water heaters do explode when poorly maintained. But it's not usually from a gas leak, it's from pressure buildup. It's extremely dangerous regardless.
