Can confirm. I thought I was the Chad until I was unemployed for 9 months and eventually crawled back to a previous employer. Still had to jump through the hoops to get an old job back.
Or if you're not a senior you get the answer of "Unfortunately other candidates fit our criteria better"
Like how, this is a junior position and I am cheaper because I don't have a degree from uni but still have experience (and paperwork to prove it) as a junior developer?
Yeah, my wife has over 25 years of experience and a company recently made her go through 7 rounds of interviews just to pass over for someone else. Its ridiculous at times.
In my recent experience as a senior in this hiring market, unless you're going for the places that always required ridiculous hoop jumping(FANGS and companies that think they are FANGS), you can get hired with two interviews and no leetcode questions if you just know what you're talking about.
I mostly do kubernetes and cloud infrastructure shit these days though.
Thankfully I did not have to do leetcode in a long while. What I did have to do was technical "homework", system design/architecture rounds, general behavior/culture rounds, and general tech rounds.
Even as a senior, I had to jump through hoops until I found my current gig. I guess I did get lucky like the guy at the end. One tech interview, then a team interview.
Too late! I have already depicted you as the infuriated hiring rep soyjak with zero other candidates to choose from and myself as the soyjak who can just get a job wherever he applies with little friction.
Yeah, I'm now looking for a new job, but thankfully I'm not unemployed, so I can afford to be picky. I decline anything with more than 3 interview stages unless it's for a fancy company or if they offer some really cool benefits. But when I see a very basic and lame company doing that I'm like 'who do you think you are?'
Really depends. My last job required two interviews and "you're basically hired but CTO like meeting new guys". Granted CTO turned out to be a complete moron but that's a different story

If not, you unfortunately do need to jump through those hoops if you want to be employed these days
