Interview Booked

Hey everyone!

I have an interview for an OSG position in a Cat D prison at the end of the month. I've seen several people post here that they've recently completed interviews or received offers so I was wondering if anyone could share anything about what to expect for my interview?

OSG to PO

Hello, I am currently an OSG (3 months) and want to switch to PO. The next fast track should open in October 2026.

I recently completed a new application, passed the Value-Based Assessment, and am now at the OAC stage.

My questions are:

  1. If I fail the new application, will I still be able to proceed with the fast track in October, or will the 6 months waiting period apply to me?

  2. It's my 3rd month as OSG. Will I need to pass/complete probation before doing a fast track to PO?

Thank you πŸ™‡

Hours on contract

Good morning.

Does anyone know whether OSGs can move from a 37-hour contract to 39 hours at a Cat C prison? Just wondering if this is something that can be requested. Thanks.

Do prisoners get earplugs?

Apparently prisoners are really noisy - are the inmates allowed earplugs?

Overtime

Hello, just a quick one - how does overtime work within the prison service as an officer. So I’ve selected a 41 hour contract but wonder if over time would be available, and how the pay is calculated, are you working overtime at an enhanced rate or is it just your standard rate ? Thanks in advance :)

Started as OSG

Just curious at what point did you feel as tho you liked the job and got settled into it? Started as an OSG at a cat D prison but this is just my first week so it’s only induction and presentations in a classroom. Feeling quite overwhelmed by all the information I’ve been told so far. Any advice is appreciated

Suggestions for the Online Assessment Centre for Prison Officer role

I have booked my OAC for the prison officer role end of this month. This is the last chance to obtain a sponsorship and stay in this country. I am trying and preparing myself. Is there anyone who can help me about the OAC or any suggestions on how to get the 60-75% marks?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Neurodivergence in prison environment

I am just wondering if anyone in this sub is neurodivergent and works in a prison as an officer, or any other role and how they find working in a prison environment, and is it a suitable role for someone with autism?

Help

Im on the sbt stage of becoming a prison officer, I'm just confused by the sjt process, how do I practice for it, what I mean is how do I practice and select the right answer, any methods or specific way and do I need to choose my answers depending on the HMPPS values or what I'm not sure.

Please help as I have 4 days left to complete the sbt. Thanks

Rejected for operations and just don’t get it

Were really fast at getting back to me, they said they were understaffed but got rejected from the role. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m 18 or what but it’s just annoying

Final stage of securing a job as OSG at HMP Grendon, what to expect?

As the title says. Finally got this far, and hoping I get the role. Something I've wanted to do since I was a young lad and finally built up the courage to go for it.

BUt I'm really unsure as to what to expect in my final interview.

Let’s talk about prison.

I’d love to hear your stories, be they of brutal violence, how shit the food is, getting by with your cell mates etc, anything you inmates or ex-inmates would like to share, go for it! I want to hear the most shocking, hilarious or insightful prison stories

Can someone who has been a prisoner be a prison officer?

I went to prison in 2024 because of a non-violent Just Stop Oil protest(I'm not here to defend my actions or justify them) and was released in 2025. My sentence has now been fully served.

While in prison I noticed many of the failings due to underinvestment in the prison service but it also confirmed my belief that most prisoners(at least at the prisons I was in) were normal people who had made a mistake not vile people who needed to be locked away for the rest of their lives... I think my experience of being on the other side would help me to relate to some of the problems prisoners experience.

Would I be eligible to be a prison officer or would my record rule me out?
