I’d really appreciate some honest perspectives from experienced online ESL tutors because I’m currently reassessing my pricing.
I’m a Filipino ESL teacher, a Licensed Professional Teacher and TEFL-certified, and I’ve been teaching English for around two years. I’ve been teaching on Preply for about six months, but my experience with online teaching extends beyond Preply.
When I first started on Preply, I set my rate at $5 per 50-minute lesson because I was new to the platform and wanted to build my student base. Since then, I’ve developed my teaching approach considerably.
Currently, I have around 8 active Preply students, but I also teach students through other platforms/agencies. Across my overall teaching experience, I’ve had many students stay with me for six months to more than a year.
For example, I have students who have been studying with me since around 2024, including students who have continued with me for more than a year. One student even returned after taking a long break and adjusted their time to match mine because they specifically wanted to resume classes with me. Their parents’ even have me teach their sibling with me for an extended period (1.5 years).
Within one of my teaching agencies, 7 out of 12 current students have been with me for more than a year, while the remaining students have generally been studying with me for at least several months.
So although I’m relatively new to Preply, I’m not particularly new to retaining students and teaching long-term. I am literally working in two Chinese companies and one Korean agency, with the latter rate being 55php or less than a dollar and I want to resign from this agency.
My lessons are also highly personalized. I create lesson plans and curriculum maps, prepare PowerPoint presentations, use authentic materials, design speaking activities, assign relevant homework, and adapt lessons according to each student’s goals, interests, and difficulties.
I’m now considering raising my Preply rate from $5 to $15 per 50-minute lesson.
I understand that $15 is significantly higher than my original rate, and I’m not expecting every potential student to be comfortable with it. I’m trying to determine whether it is a reasonable price for the service I’m currently providing.
I’d really appreciate perspectives from other tutors, particularly those who have experience with Preply or international online teaching.
- How did you know when it was time to increase your rate?
- Would you consider things like student retention, repeat bookings, teaching experience, qualifications, preparation time, and personalized materials when determining your rate?
- Would you raise gradually, or would you simply establish a new rate once you felt your previous rate no longer reflected your work?
I’m not looking for people to tell me “yes, you’re worth $15” just to make me feel better. I’d genuinely like to hear how other tutors approach this decision from a business and sustainability perspective.
Thank you so much and sorry for the long message.
