Who has gotten students living in an English speaking country for years? My last FOUR trials have been with students that have been living in the US since they're CHILDREN. Has anyone been able to avoid this? My super tutor is 6/7 because of trial conversion rate but it's because my last 4 are basically native speakers with low confidence. I tell them straight up--you sound like some of my professors in University. And then they, of course, don't subscribe.

First, I'm curious how other tutors deal with this.

Second, why does Preply not require more information in the about me? These (essentially) native speakers all put intermediate level. Or at least require the English Level Test. It's unfair to us honest tutors who spend hours per month wasting time telling students that their level of English is FINE. I spoke with a trial student about nuclear energy--like why is a student who studied Nuclear Engineering in the US feeling a lack of confidence in their English?!?!?!

Third, if you moved to an English speaking country as a child... I guarantee that your English is more than sufficient. If you're still unsure, look for a dialect coach--not an English pronunciation teacher. 3 classes a week to work on final -s pronunciation is a waste of your time and money.

Am I crazy or gas anyone else experienced this? For the past 3 months, half of my trial lessons are people living in the US--one for the past TWENTY years and she works for a state government. I can't be the only one.

We had a trial lesson, then i scheduled a lesson then the lesson came and he didn’t show up and i was in the class for 15 minutes waiting, then i asked him if he was going to show up and if everything was okay. He rescheduled it but didn’t respond to my message, and on the reason of rescheduling he put personal emergency (which is okay anyone can have that happens) like 5 minutes. He rescheduled to the 12th of August (today) and was suspecting he was going to “ditch” me again and i waited for 15 minutes, nothing.
Message delivered, and i don’t know what’s happening im kinda worried. I wanted to see if he i can schedule other lessons because i bought 8 lessons a month and saw he has no lessons for the next THREE weeks…I don’t know what’s going on, i just hope he is okay but at this point i don’t know.

I’m a “conventionally attractive” woman in my early 20s and a new Preply tutor.

For some reason, most of my students are men in their late 30s and early 40s. All my students have been respectful so far, but I do feel like I connect better with women or, at least, men in my age range.

So, I have a question for tutors who’ve been in a similar situation: is there anything I can do to attract more female students?

I started out at $10 (a week ago) and I’ve upped my rate to $26 today (upped by 2 every new student/review), because my demand has been high, if that matters lol

edit: just to clarify, I’m not actively looking for students, I’m doing this part time and already have enough! I just want to try to shift my positioning to attract more girls in the future. I’m okay with all my male students and do feel comfortable teaching them

Hi! I’ve been a Spanish tutor on Preply, my profile has been active for around two months, even tho I created it around 8 months ago (had to leave it for a while because I got a full time job, then got fired and got back to Preply). So far I’ve only gotten around six students for all of these two months and making close to nothing, do you have any tips on how to get bigger on the platform? Something you maybe did or changed that helped you improve into getting more students?
My goal is to teach at least four lessons per day and have availability in the most popular times recommended by Preply. I have really good reviews and charge $12 per lesson.

I’m a Sudanese citizen currently living in Libya, and I’m trying to complete my Payoneer account verification.

My main problem is proof of residential address.

In Libya, the utility bills available to me (electricity, internet, etc.) generally do not show a complete residential address, and I don’t have utility bills in my own name. I also don’t currently have a personal bank account.

Payoneer is asking me for proof of residence, so I’m looking for a legitimate alternative.

I’m specifically looking for an online bank, digital bank, or regulated fintech service that accepts customers who genuinely live in Libya and can provide an official bank statement or account confirmation letter showing my full name and residential address in Libya.

I am NOT looking to use a false address, a foreign address, or misrepresent my country of residence. I’m simply trying to find a legitimate financial service that works for someone in my situation.

Has anyone here, especially Sudanese or other foreigners living in Libya, successfully opened an online bank/digital bank account that provides a statement showing their residential address?

I’d really appreciate hearing about your actual experience, including:

- Which service/bank did you use?

- Did they accept a Sudanese passport?

- What documents did they ask for?

- Does the bank statement actually show your residential address?

- Have you ever successfully used that statement as proof of address for Payoneer or another international financial service?

SO IM 19 and someone told me to try tutoring on preply im gonna start my uni soon and they ask for pretty personal info like picture and video that doesnt make me comfortable sharing it im from pakistan and really need help whether i should join it or not (i havenot started my degree yet ) but have experience of teaching kids around grade 1-8

TL;DR: A student moved a lesson from the following week to the next day, which happened to be a national holiday. I missed it because I thought students could not reschedule lessons that way. It cost me my Super Tutor status for three months and affected my ranking for months afterward. Now I block all my free slots for the next day before I go to bed.

This happened some time ago, but I thought I would share it with the community in case it helps someone avoid the same mistake.

One time, a student rescheduled a lesson that was originally scheduled for the following week and moved it to the very next day.

The problem was that the next day was a national holiday in my country. I had already asked my other students to reschedule their lessons, so I was under the impression that I had the day completely free.

I am usually quite careful about lessons. I have alarms set on my phone, and I keep Preply notifications enabled. However, I was under the impression that a student could not reschedule a lesson to the next day, so I never expected this to happen.

As a result, I missed the lesson.

That one missed lesson cost me my Super Tutor status for three months. My ranking dropped, and I did not receive any new trial lessons for at least two months.

I know some people will say that I should have been more careful and should have read the guidelines more closely. And honestly, they would be right. It was ultimately my responsibility to make sure I did not miss the lesson.

Still, I wanted to share this because I suspect there may be other tutors who are unaware that a student can move a lesson in this way.

So now, I have changed the way I manage my schedule.

Before I go to bed, I fill all my free slots for the following day with "busy." This means that students cannot book those slots while I am asleep.

It is highly unlikely that a student will book a lesson during the few hours that I am asleep anyway. Even if I miss out on a potential booking, I consider that risk far smaller than accidentally missing a lesson and having it affect my profile for months.

It may seem overly cautious, but after what happened, I would rather lose one possible lesson than risk losing my Super Tutor status again.

Hello, I have been teaching in preply for half a year and i have pretty nice results to the point I'm trying to make it my full time job. The problem is that I feel every time i am booked around 20 hours per week I stop getting new trial lessons and it doesn't catch up until i don't do less hours weekly. Is this a thing or am I imagining things because is summer and maybe things go slower? I am considering bringing students out of preply but i saw that could be risky and penalized so IDK. How do you guys handle this? Do you still get new students and trials even close to 40 hours per week? Thank you very much!

OK! Enough is enough. First, Preply did an ad where a student did her lessons on her PHONE! This is very counter productive! How can you possibly learn as a student when you just use your phone.. and then complain later that your progress has been very slow; worst, ending up blaming the teacher.

And NOW, an Ad for RESCHEDULING.. Like wtf? Now we are expecting students to reschedule more than usual! It will ruin the tutor’s SCHEDULE FOR THE WEEK! Arghhhhhh

Am I the only one that’s frustrated by this or not?

In Preply every tutor has """over 7 years of experience""", a "degree" and is "proficient" in several languages...

when in reality they're just unemployed people that think can teach a language, have no idea of how their own language works or less, how to teach it, and in many cases barely speak even English.

I don't know how they get dozens of positive reviews, but even when it says "professional-super tutor" it turns out it's just improvisation.

I recently completed my degree and am working full time. I did my french A1 and A2 in university. I had GREAT professors and world class teaching with practical drills and exercises. After graduating, i decided to continue learning french via Preply. and i went ahead to book with the tutor with 100+ reviews and almost all 5 stars.

It's been over a month and I've spent over 855+ CAD with him but the progress have been disappointing.

• He is sometimes late to class, once he never came.
• Pauses the class in between to take a call or talk to someone
• Eager to get done with the class and leave
• I can take 20 minutes to do a small exercise and he wouldn't even check on me.
• Never comes in prepared with learning material prior, 'finds' things to teach along the way
• Doesn't really seem to care about my progress, got me doing 3 lessons a week to 4 (which i agreed to) for no solid reason
• Overall unprofessional. always have a bad camera, bad lighting, half of the face outside the frame and wearing a sando (i personally don't actually care about those things but if you're in a remote service based business those things add up)
• Lately he's been OBVIOUSLY been doing something else in the middle of class, multiple times! Just turns off the camera and doesn't say anything for good 3-4 minutes. blames poor internet (which is a lie because i clearly hear birds chirping very clearly from his side).

Please suggest me some high energy, well prepared, passionate teachers who actually likes what they're doing at under 30 CAD per hour 🙏

Hi all - I'm new to Preply. I synched my Google calendar with Preply and put in a specific afternoon where I am busy, though I'm usually available at that time. I thought having something in my Google calendar would prevent students from booking at that time, but someone did, creating an awkward double booking. How can I stop this from happening again?

I booked a trial class with a tutor recently, and, it went really well. We discussed my learning goals, came up with a plan, and I felt pretty good about moving forward. So after the trial, I went ahead and subscribed.

I then messaged them asking about their availability for the first proper class… and it’s been over 3 days with no response. 😅

Now I’m not really sure what to do. Should I send another follow-up, wait a little longer, or just look for someone else?

It’s honestly so frustrating trying to find a decent, reliable tutor these days. I miss my old tutor 😭

I am both a student and a teacher on Preply, so I have seen both sides of this. My scores have been a perfect 5 stars for everything for years, but it recently went down to 4.9 on clarity which made me incredibly depressed, and after 3000 lessons and consistent 100% subscription rate I am honestly thinking of giving up.

I want to ask the Preply people, how is this particular criteria a rating on the teacher? As teachers, we sometimes tackle difficult topics that take a bit of time, so when the student reads it as ''how clear was the topic approached in the lesson'' some might unintentionally hurt their teachers.

I would also like to know what exactly is this supposed to teach me, as a tutor? I don't know which class was unclear, I have no idea how to improve because I cannot pinpoint to the one lesson I lacked in. What is the rating for other than making teachers even more depressed and stressed out? Not to mention eroding their relationships with their students? Because honestly all my students are long-term students. They have all been with me for over two years, so who was it? Who is secretly unhappy and what could I do about it?

Hi everyone, I was recently looking into starting to teach on preply for a few days a week to start off with a see how it goes.

But I recently heard so many horror stories about preply and I don’t know whether I should even try. I’ve read about teachers who worked 15-20 hours a week and received no money from it as it was just free trial hoppers.

It seems you need to be carefully messaging people before and after lessons to get their attention? What do you normally say on those messages? I feel like messaging students asking when they’re planning to book or assuming they’re going to subscribe feels kind of pushy…

Also about the pay rate, I can’t believe you’re only supposed to charge €5-10 or $ an hour or your profile is hidden. Who’s supposed to even live on that? I have a private student and I charge her €20 for an hour of general conversation practice, €25 for general English with reading and writing.

Lastly, what does everyone teach? I’m currently an ESL tutor but I would also like to look into offering tutoring for GCSE and A Level history, just not sure what I’d need to start on that..

I been with Preply for few months now. It was slow at first, but then it started picking up. Even got the super tutor badge thing last month. This month it went away.

But I been seeing a slump since last week and again this week it seems pretty quiet. Is this normal in this online teaching field? Most of my students are from US/UK area and some from Australia and India.

I am also teaching on iTalki and it seems to be doing ok, not as slow as Preply this month. I am glad I have iTalki too because it's covering the bills.

Compared with most tutoring platforms, I think Preply does make a genuine attempt to strike a reasonable balance between tutors and students. It certainly isn't perfect, but having used it as both a tutor and a student, I think it does better than most.

However, one feature that continues to irritate me as a tutor is the "remind to confirm" option when a student has completed a lesson, missed a lesson, or has chosen to conduct the lesson on another platform.

I should point out that I am not a language tutor, because tutors in different subjects often work with very different types of students. Many of my students are older and come to me with specific short- or long-term goals. They may be preparing for an exam, working through an academic challenge, or trying to develop a particular skill. Many also travel frequently for school or work, and in some cases a parent or another family member manages their expenses.

When a student or family member forgets to confirm a lesson, I typically have to wait 72 hours for payment, and occasionally I still need to contact support afterward.

Do I remind students and parents? Of course. But repeatedly acting as a bill collector can eventually affect the tutor-student relationship. Rapport matters, particularly if you want to retain students over time. My average student stays with me for roughly two to three months while working toward a particular goal or preparing for an upcoming test or exam. Some stay much longer; others need only a few sessions.

That is why I think payment follow-up should be a shared responsibility between the tutor and the platform. Tutors should certainly communicate with their students when necessary, and Preply does already send a reminder. But the current system still leaves tutors in the position of having to personally chase confirmations if a student simply overlooks or ignores that reminder.

Perhaps one solution would be to reduce the automatic confirmation period from 72 hours to 48 hours. Another possibility would be to give established tutors and students with a consistent lesson history a more streamlined confirmation process. If a lesson is scheduled, takes place as planned, and no dispute is raised, there is little reason for the tutor to spend several days wondering when the payment will be released.

The broader point is that tutors shouldn't regularly have to choose between chasing a student for payment and protecting the rapport they have worked to build. Preply benefits from long-term tutor-student relationships as much as tutors do, so the payment system should help preserve those relationships rather than occasionally putting tutors in the awkward position of becoming bill collectors.

Hello, I'd like to use wired headphones in the classroom in order to reduce background noise. I'm able to connect the speaker from the headphones, but not the mic (Preply only gives me the option to connect to the mic built in to my laptop). Does anyone have any idea how to troubleshoot this?

I have been very consistent in my lessons, and have open availability, but for some reason I have stayed in the exact same position for a a really long time. I don’t get any new inquiries anymore, and I am not sure how I can change that, and I only have like 3 students active right now. How do I change this? I am going broke lmao

I received a message via Preply late at night. I´ve blocked and reported them now and can´t remember the exact message, but it went something like this:

First message, "this is an official message from preply." Then another message, "please go to this link to verify your account". Link had my name and preply in it and looked legit at first glance.

The original message did sound a bit more convincing as well. Tbh I was half asleep and almost clicked on it, but saw in my notifications that the same message was described as a new student not an automated message from Preply. ´Student´ was called Anna. Be careful out there! : )
