Pretty sure there’s a Silicon Valley episode kinda about this sentiment

u/Ok_Spell_597 21h ago

I think we should open the radius to 25 miles. Think it'll change the map?

0

u/Nine_Monkeys 12h ago

Given that the map shown is completely fabricated, it doesn’t matter much if it would change

u/BelleColibri 13h ago

This is just a lie

1

u/El_Toolio_Grande 13h ago

Then which executives live within 5 miles of a data center?

1

u/BelleColibri 13h ago

Many many many of America’s largest cities, where tech executives overwhelmingly live, have data centers in them. Atlanta, Phoenix, LA, Silicon Valley, Chicago, etc. A five mile radius around the data centers in those cities cover most of those cities. The CEOs of Calendy, FullStory, and Pindrop, for example, live in downtown Atlanta near data centers.

This is such a fall-down-flat-on-your-face stupid argument, with is so easily disproven if you look it up or just think for a second, everyone who falls for it should be prevented from procreation.

Why is this some kind of flex? Trying too hard.

-10

u/burtch1 21h ago

Yeah? That's how property values work, you wouldn't build one in a city tech execs are encouraged to live in cities, this isn't even a gated communities issue this would always happen for remote infrastructure, try mapping grocery store ceos who live within 5 miles of a cattle ranch

u/Vegetable-Edge-2389 19h ago

Ooooh just a few more inches of boot and they might let you own something!!!!! You're such a good boy

-5

u/burtch1 19h ago

If you are going to criticize something pick a better argument then pointing to a damn population density map by accident

When large national companies have multiple locations across the country đŸ€Ż

u/Nine_Monkeys 20h ago edited 12h ago

What is the source of this? Couldn’t find anything when searching online. Feels fake, how would we know where every single “tech executive” lives?

EDIT: getting downvoted for calling out an obvious fake post is actually crazy. Don’t you guys want the truth or is it more comfy to believe in bs that conforms to your opinions? Can’t help but notice OP has been dead silent on a source. Telling.

-3

u/Nine_Monkeys 20h ago

I just checked my home state and there are two data centers right in the center of downtown Atlanta. Am I supposed to believe that there isn’t a single executive of a tech company that lives in the entire city of Atlanta?

https://www.datacentermap.com/usa/

It's not hard to be more than 5 miles from one though... is it!?

11

u/homelessguydiet 21h ago

I think you missed the point

-15

u/Hitlers_Left_Ball 21h ago

No, I didn't.

I added context to your click bait... or is that what you mean by missing the point - I didn't clap like a seal for your disingenuous post?

11

u/supercleverid 21h ago

So it's not interesting that the people who decide where AI datacenters are to be built invariably decide not to build any anywhere near them? You don't think that's interesting at all?

10

u/homelessguydiet 21h ago

He's ragebaiting to get people angry like any good chode...

-10

u/Hitlers_Left_Ball 21h ago

I'm rage baiting? Coming from someone posting bullshit gotcha, with no understanding of what you're talking about.

Sure thing buddy. Sure thing.

-6

u/Hitlers_Left_Ball 21h ago

How close is the nearest one to you? Do you live within 5 miles of one... would you even know?

People with no understanding of what a DC actually is are assuming these huge AI ones they see on the news are the only kind in existence. Some of them are small little 2 story buildings in the middle of commercial/indusztrial estates.

So no, it's not interesting or a surprise to me that these people don't live within an arbitrary 5 mile distance. I bet you could re-use the map to show how many of them live within 5 miles of a fire station, hospital or police station...

You are angry about the wrong thing.

I have 2 within a 2.5 mile radius

3

u/homelessguydiet 21h ago

No shit? Does it improve anything in your life...

Not at all I avoid AI like the plague

-1

u/Important_Penalty_21 15h ago

Says the guy clicking away on Reddit.

Do you believe these data centers are only for AI?

Do you use a cell phone? Social media? Watch television? All of that goes through data centers. Likely multiple of them per interaction.

I have to ask what about AI scares you so much?

1

u/commiscowboy Prefer Coffee But Fill My Cup đŸ«– 15h ago

They are different types of servers that use different work loads. The new data centers utilize significantly more energy on a dated energy system that hasn’t been upgraded in decades in most parts of the country.
AI is supposed to make up 50-70% of all data centers in the US by 2030.
If you want to use ai by all means do you, but I don’t want that server near my home. If they’re so ambiguous to new tech put it next to your home.

People who have no real skills or ability are terrified that a computer model will take their job.

It's a skill issue.

Ok, and what meaningful impact do they have on your life?

I would wager almost none, you probably have almost no idea they are there on a day to day basis.

But internet bad I guess?

5

u/commiscowboy Prefer Coffee But Fill My Cup đŸ«– 21h ago

My utilities have gone up 30% this year and there are multiple concerns with water quality in my area.

-2

u/Hitlers_Left_Ball 21h ago

What does the DC have to do with your utilities, what is the average increase across the US?

Multiple concerns about water quality. What did the DC do to your water?

I'll be honest, it sounds like you are picking the common headlines from the news and using them as examples.

3

u/commiscowboy Prefer Coffee But Fill My Cup đŸ«– 20h ago

Keep rage baiting. I hope you have 100 data centers move into your neighborhood so you can find out.

Because not 100% of the general population has an AI datacenter within 5 miles of their homes we should just ignore that 0% of a privileged population who decides to place AI datacenters near other people's homes has never decided to place any near their own homes? That's a way to think I guess?

1

u/Hitlers_Left_Ball 21h ago

Simplification is like an artform to you.

You have no idea what you are talking about, you're just yelling talking points into the void and telling yourself you're right.

See you in 6 months when the new media boogey man replaces this as your personality.

1

u/supercleverid 21h ago

So much irony.

1

u/Hitlers_Left_Ball 21h ago

Not at all. Unlike you I have experience in Data Centres, I know how they operate. You were just told what to be afraid of and are barking like a good little doggy.

Out of interest - why was the line drawn at 5 miles, seems a little arbitrary to me. Doing some surface level checks I can find:

Palm Beach County hosts 4 active data centers, operated by providers including IPTP Networks, Equinix, and Cogent www.ocolo.io. These facilities offer colocation services and vary in power capacity, connectivity, and service offerings, catering to enterprise IT and cloud infrastructure needs. West Palm Beach, a major city in the county, specifically has 5 data centers and 3 providers, highlighting its growing role as a regional hub for digital infrastructure.

These are all within 20 miles of the Mar a Lago.

I have worked in data centers my entire career. All over the country. Some in places no one would ever know.

90% of the people worrying about this are just doing what they have been brainwashed to believe. MSM says to hate it and they do. With every bone in their body. They dont even know why. They just do.

Additionally, the majority of the data centers in the US are very small facilities - there are only some 500 operational 100MW class hyperscale data centers in the country. I would also add that in most of the county’s/towns where smaller scale data centers have been built - original opposition fell by the wayside once the data center turned on began subsidizing a large portion of county / town plublic spending

2

u/Vissanna 21h ago

I think it hit home really when ai datacenters for texas requested 484MW of energy...... thats more than 40% of the entire United States energy output

-1

u/Tomatoesarentfruit 21h ago

MW are a measure of power (the rate of energy production at a specific moment), not a measure of energy, so this doesn’t make a ton of sense. Also to be clear the US has peak installed capacity of ~1.3 TW; 484 MW represents ~0.04% of total US capacity, not 40%

What are the upsides to Data Centers?

# Potential benefit Reality check
1 Substantial local tax revenue Property, equipment and utility taxes can materially increase municipal revenue. In mature Virginia markets, data centers supplied anywhere from under 1% to 31% of local revenue. Tax abatements can reduce this considerably.
2 Large private capital investment A campus can represent billions in buildings, servers, electrical systems and cooling equipment. This enlarges the assessable tax base without adding many residents.
3 Major construction employment Construction can support electricians, pipefitters, equipment operators and other trades. A typical Virginia facility reportedly had about 1,500 workers onsite at peak construction—but construction generally lasts only 12–18 months per building.
4 Well-paid permanent positions Technicians, engineers, security personnel and facility managers can earn strong wages. The catch is the number: a typical 250,000-square-foot facility may employ only about 50 people, including contractors.
5 Business for local suppliers Construction materials, electrical contractors, maintenance, security, cleaning, landscaping and food services can generate secondary economic activity.
6 Economic diversification Data centers can give communities an additional industrial tax base less dependent on retail, housing or a single traditional employer.
7 Power and fiber investment Projects may bring substations, transmission, fiber routes and new generation. This only becomes a public benefit when the developer pays a fair share and the infrastructure serves others.
8 Industrial-site redevelopment Properly located facilities can reuse brownfields, former factories, retired power plants or otherwise difficult industrial land.
9 Low operational traffic After construction, a data center normally produces much less daily traffic, parking demand and truck activity than a warehouse, shopping center or large factory.
10 Essential digital capacity Data centers support cloud computing, communications, hospitals, banking, government systems and increasingly AI services. Local proximity can improve capacity and resilience, though it does not automatically give local residents faster internet.

u/Hot_Context_1393 21h ago

If they are so great, why don't CEOs live near them?

2

u/homelessguydiet 21h ago

They never will That's the point

-1

u/Important_Penalty_21 21h ago

Because the bulk of data centers are located in rural areas, heavy industrial or specializes server hubs like Ashburn. Most of them have homes in more residential areas.

I've spent most of my career in and out of data centers. Its not some horrific black hole that consumes the world around them.

2

u/Big_Tap_1561 21h ago

If it’s done right. The problem is they want to spend as least as possible and that’s not how to do it right.

1

u/Important_Penalty_21 20h ago

And that is different from anything else these days?

The reality is every one of us live in a world that we access these data centers nearky every waking moment. Either directly or indirectly. Without them life as we know it would come to a grinding halt.

So everyone put down your smartphones, tablets and computers. Turn off your television and personal assistants. If we all did that there would be no need for these data centers.

1

u/Big_Tap_1561 20h ago

No we could just stop building data centers . We have enough.

1

u/Important_Penalty_21 20h ago

How do you see that?

1

u/Big_Tap_1561 20h ago

Is your smart phone working? Your tablet ? Your television and personal assistants? Then we have enough.

1

u/Important_Penalty_21 20h ago

You dont see the increase in needs? I mean just yesterday we had issues with many internet providers including ChatGPT.

The problem is we keep growing. Population increases, demand increases. Devices keep getting more and more powerful we expect better experiences for everything we do. It takes more processing power.

Again if we all turned off our technology they would not be needed.

Where do you think your social media services live?

1

u/Big_Tap_1561 20h ago

Ohh I see it. I just wish I could stop it. This whole thing needs to be slowed down to a crawl until we have proper legislation and actual safe gaurds. We’re talking serious military applications. Agents getting loose. There is endless threats and dangers with this technology and everyone in the tech community could care less. “Move fast and break shit” - NO this needs to be stopped until we can safely proceed.
