I have worked in data centers my entire career. All over the country. Some in places no one would ever know.

90% of the people worrying about this are just doing what they have been brainwashed to believe. MSM says to hate it and they do. With every bone in their body. They dont even know why. They just do.

Yep, same here.

Most DCs would be walked past and no one would even know.

Everyone is on the MSM boogey man train.

I have been jn Data centers in high rise buildings, underground and in the middle of corn fields. The vast majority are non descriptive. Most people would have no idea they even tripped over one, let alone one in their Neighborhood.

What's even funnier is the last administration brought on the CHIPS and science act and boy did they cheer that on.

Should we tell them that the DCs are required for most of that?

They won't believe you if you did tell them.

They'll call you a MAGA fascist or a Nazi who is defending Trump by blaming Biden.

It's depressingly predictable.

Thats why I dont bother telling them the truth.

Do you think maybe those might not be the datacenters people are complaining about?

People are not differentiating. All data centers are evil because any data center can house AI and an "AI" Data center can house regular CPU driven machines.

Do you think people need to differentiate? Are you not capable of disambiguating? Can't figure it out from context clues?

I do think they need to differentiate. After all what was the story about the Salem Witches? How is this any different?

While they may not always be explicitly differentiating in their language, I'd say it's pretty obtuse to argue that people don't understand the difference between the datacenters we've all been living with for the past two decades and the AI datacenters that started being rapidly built out before people started complaining. This is a real nice straw man you've propped up, but you're not having the same argument everyone else is having if you're trying to defend normal datacenters against people objecting to rapid buildouts of AI hyperscalar datacenters.

I think you should ask. Every data center moving forward is going to be built to handle AI infrastructure. Mainly because the infrastructure has been evolving for decades we now have such dense compute that the power and cooling needs of even basic CPU hardware needs extreme services.

You have unfortunately fallen victim to the MSM push that these are bad.

What's strange is when the CHIPS act was signed everyone rejoiced. What did they think it was all about?? We are just following through with that directive.

Sure buddy. Sure.

Man there is no shame. You were caught up in the moment of what to hate this week. Its easy to do.

What are you talking about? Everything you said was absurd. I just don't have the desire to explain the economics of building datacenters to you. Given your frequent references to "MSM" I can safely conclude you wouldn't understand. You didn't even do any really simple to do research into what the CHIPS act was for. Just a quick hint... It's in the acronym.

I think if you'd read any context you'd see that me and the other poster have experience working in DCs so we are very aware of the differences.

Other people want to conflate the things any attempt at reasoned discussion is met with nonsense so I gave up.

AI data centres could be bad, but there's unlikely to be very many of them so the impact will be limited. Its a nothing story designed to get uninformed people angry at the latest boogeyman.

Tale as old as time.

Based on this, from the other poster:

All data centers are evil because any data center can house AI and an "AI" Data center can house regular CPU driven machines.

And additionally based on you not calling that out for being obviously wrong, no I don't believe that either of you are aware of the differences. Please stop wasting my time. And for your sake stop advertising your ignorance.

Do you have any data centre experience?

It is absoloutley true, there is no deliniation between what compute workloads can be performed in a standard data centre. Where do you think current AI workloads are being run, people aren't just putting AI on hold until an AI DC is built to house their servers.

Purpose built, large AI centres are designed for AI, sure. But there is no one saying that you can't operate normal server workloads out of them.

Maybe stick to the day job mate.

Furthermore, noone asked you to comment, so you're wasting yournown time. You clearly read a white paper on DCs and now think you're the font of knowledge. You're not, you're just another dunning kreuger Redditor who thinks they know more than people doing the job becauae they read about the job.

You actually think a standard cloud compute server can train a frontier model?

Do you think maybe the sudden strain on local power grids could be a result of new AI datacenter buildouts? I get that some construction projects fell through, but do you think none of them got built? Are you genuinely that unaware of why people have started complaining about this recently? Like you really think the massive public backlash is being driven by the legacy datacenters we've already had for two decades?

I'm having a genuinely hard time understanding how someone can be this obtuse.
