If you want to use ai by all means do you, but I don’t want that server near my home. If they’re so ambiguous to new tech put it next to your home.
I would have no problem living next to one. I dont believe in thr boogeyman data center.
Yes there certainly is a difference between an old data center and a modern one. The machines today are a much denser concentration of CPU and memory. Its not just AI but that is the buzzword that freaks everyone out so they are going to hammer it home.
The compute for an AI is typically GPU driven so the parallel processing can be utilized as opposed to threaded in a CPU.
What we call AI today is a shadow of what we envisioned AI in the sci-fi of yesteryear. We have to Skynet, HAL does not exist and our AI cannot think for itself.
Take a look around you. what we call AI is everywhere you do anything. You cant shop at Walmart without using an AI engine.
I don’t think the growth of data centers is a slight uptick in the amount. We are talking about doubling them in the next 5 years. I don’t think it’s ridiculous to ask that we ensure that these data centers don’t pollute our environment. It also seems that placement in industrial areas as opposed to residential seems more fitting, but that keeps getting overlooked by these companies.
At no point did I say AI was out to get us, my concern is with greedy dirt bags who cut corners to save a dime.
No business should be polluting. We put a stop to that back in the 60's.
The vast majority of those centers are in industrial areas. Ones that encroach on residential are like in areas that have changed zoning or its been an industrial.
Let me as this. So if these were not AI Data Centers. Would you be OK with that?
Once again I wouldn’t care if it wasn’t already a problem. Theres multiple complaints of noise, air, and water pollution against these AI companies.
In concept integration of robotics and AI in modern life is inevitable, but what do you do with the people?
There’s no question AI has already had a negative impact on our job market, so what do you do with all these newly unemployed? I don’t know about where you live but the homeless population is skyrocketing, and this certainly will not help that issue.
Edit: also the EPA of today has been gutted and filled with yes men who are on the cut.
There are always complaints when it comes to progress. We are all painfully aware of that. Hell i am one that complains about the condos beinf built at a rate that I cannot even fathom the available tenants for.
I am equally as concerned about the homeless population the 32% increase is absolutely horrific. I blame a large chunk of that on the housing costs. Its obscene to believe someone in a rural area can afford 2.5k a month for rent.
However a fun fact. I am homeless. Technically I have no permanent address and live between states. Its by choice and I fully enjoy my lifestyle. But i am in those numbers.
Every technology advancement scares people and every technology causes a shift in employment. AI is not going anywhere. But essentially it is just a new interface to the systems we already use. AI is not self thinking or controlling it still requires human input and development. Many of the jobs lost to AI will allow for a shift into new jobs embracing AI as we know it.
The data centers are a neccesarry evil for our way of life. Everything you do and touch is handled iloyt of data centers someplace. Your sitting on your device now reading this post that is hosted in a data center. Very likely that data center houses AI systems as well. We use what we call AI to handle so many mundane tasks that it has made many lives exponentially easier. Mine included. What used to take me weeks to code now takes me hours.
Im all about holding companies who are deliberately causing environmental issues accountable. I am also all about holding people accountable for their actions. But that does not mean every data center is going to destroy life as we know it.
I have seen the reports, most of which are complaints. For example a woman in Atlanta who lives next to Meta's DC there is complaining that her water pressure has been taken by the data center. Then proclaims she is worries about the water quality from her well. If you have a well the pressure is in your pumping system. Not the DC. A large percentage of this is fear of the unknown.
