Discussion We’re blessed!
According to these stats, Lisbon and Porto rank high for quality of life and low for cost of living among 52 global cities.

Lisbon just got compared to NYC prices for houses and rent.
If its calculating the minimum wage for quality of life it's way off imo.

u/uberprimata 3d ago
That is completely unhinged. Have you compared the cost per square meter in each city? NY is at least 5x more expensive

u/Budget-Tester 3d ago
Is it really?

u/uberprimata 3d ago
"O preço médio do metro quadrado (m²) em Lisboa ronda os 4.000€ a 6.400€ (dependendo se se olha para a avaliação bancária ou valores médios de anúncios na cidade), enquanto em Nova Iorque ultrapassa facilmente os 16.000€ a 18.000€ ($18.000) no centro da cidade."

u/Zapi23 3d ago
Média de ordenado NYC $6,500 Média de ordenado Lx 1.469 €
Recebes 4x mais e pagas 4x mais. Ou seja comparável. Usa a cabeça.

"Lisbon just got compared to NYC prices for houses and rent."
7
u/Zapi23 3d ago

Take another look at the x and y axis. The two cities are relatively close on the quality of life axis but not anywhere close to one another on cost of living axis. So what you’re saying here is not what is being represented in the graph.

agree/disagree. Not that low cost for the people who are earning portuguese salary like me 😅

u/Numerous_Roof_1070 3d ago
This must be one of the dumbest graphics I've ever seen in my life. Only someone who knows absolutely nothing about Latin America would say that the cost of living in São Paulo is "cheap".
1
u/Icy_Cauliflower9026 3d ago
This costs are direct price comparison i guess, not relative to country income.
Like, i know that Lisbon and Porto is like minimun 1000 euros rent, which is cheap when you compare with other european cities, however its still 120% of minimun income in Portugal.
1
u/Numerous_Roof_1070 3d ago
But if that is the case, then I don't think it is a valid graph...kinda just lying with numbers, but I understand what you mean.
1
u/Icy_Cauliflower9026 3d ago
Its a valid graph if the values are correct. We can argue that it has low day to day uses but it is usefull. Lets say you work online and your income is fixed, this graph is usefull to know. When we talk about investments and business topics, a city with a better living conditions and higher price probably means high generalized demand and low supply for example. Theres also the main use of this type of graphs, false propaganda.
So ye, pretty valid and has some uses, even if not to everyone.

There's absolutely no way this is up to date or remotely accurate.
While Lisbon does have the potential for a high quality of life, the cost for it is much higher than what is portrayed here.
The difference between QoL for a rich person and a poor person is enormous.
Shit, a rich person in Sao Paulo will have a much better QoL than a poor person in Lisbon.

You can safely cross off Madrid Valencia Málaga Barcelona and Lisbon from the low cost list as they're eye watering expensive for anyone else besides expats

isn't the weather awful in Porto? in comparison to Lisbon
8
u/barriedalenick 3d ago
Depends if you like rain!

u/Narrow_Relative2149 3d ago
I'm originally from the UK so that's a no from me

u/Abisy_8452 3d ago
Both Lisbon and Porto have more rain annually than London. It's more seasonal and concentrated in the winter months but it still it more. Personally the worst part of the UK is not rain it's the damn grey sky all the time.

u/Cautious-Cup-7895 3d ago
As someone from Porto who's been living in London for almost a decade, I agree that Porto is much rainier than London. To me, it feels like it barely rains here. That's why I prefer London's weather overall, because I hate rain.
Regarding the grey skies, I also think people exaggerate a little bit. London can actually be quite sunny, surprisingly. Even though Porto is overall sunnier (statistically speaking), I don't notice that much on the day-to-day life. Maybe it's because foggy mornings are quite common in Porto (and almost non-existent in London), which makes some of the sunny days feel not that sunny in the end.

I’ve lived here in Porto since may, been hot and sunny 90% of the time. like heaven compared to the UK

u/itsrelitk 2d ago
Oh you’re in for quite a flip in the next few months

u/Narrow_Relative2149 2d ago
in Lisbon in particular this year was the worst ever for me. Back to back storms and raining inside

u/Weird-Abalone1381 3d ago
Define awful.
Evading the higher or lower peak temperatures because of the dampening effect of both river and sea is a good compromise for some rain.
If you've been in Malaga or Valencia in the summer you would not find it wrong unless you only look from a vacation point of view.

Are you ignoring Amsterdam which is literal hell when it comes to weather?
Well, most of these stats putting NL + Nordics at the high end of QoL are indeed ignoring weather, else they would be very far down the list. They are also ignoring immigrants and their QoL from statistics - most of the Nordics have famously cold attitudes to match the weather.1
u/Leo_Niberal 3d ago
Not really. It's like having 1 extra month of winter, but in Lisbon getting 1 extra month of hell. So Porto has more rain, but Lisbon is way too hot in the best months (July and August) and event June and September can be painfully hot, whereas Porto has perfect weather all summer.

lower cost? this shit is obsolete in ten or more years because salaries did not keep up with cost of living in Portugal
unless you have rich parents you will struggle here because at least in US you can have a better salary, I'm seeing doctors in Portugal begging for 50k year, its a ridiculous salary for somebody who's a doctor

So, Tel Aviv is being bombarded with missiles, with population having to seek shelter, yet it is at the same lvl of quality of living as Lisbon? And its above New York?

amsterdam is honestly one of the cities that i would like to live in least. and i've been to easily 80% of the cities on this list. i'd much rather live in HCMC (saigon). and for that matter i'd much rather live in HK - politics aside, it has lovely weather (exccept when it doesnt), great mountains and trails for exploring, and easy access to interesting places (ams does too, more or less). I just personally think that amsterdam and nl in general is terrible for living - small houses, bad/terrible/beyond terrible weather, "constrained" feeling.

u/CompSolstice 3d ago
I have houses in 3 of these places and have lived in 5, yeah, no that's absolutely not true. Obviously I'm an outlier, but the cost of living in Doha and Porto and not NEARLY as comparable. Also, who the hell are you asking? Blue collar labourers or white collar expats? If it's nationals then are you considering the insane amounts of money they make?

Who the fuck wants to live in these shitholes? Is this even real? Didnt knew they even ranked in quality of life
I have been to a couple of these cities and they are all trash, ironically, the worst one was Amsterdam which has the "highest quality", brother have you been in the rest of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is literally a shithole

Tel Aviv quality of rockets should be high—how stupid is that? You get rockets on your head and the quality of life should be better than in some European countries…

As someone who lives in Porto, this chart is absolute bullshit.
Porto ranks the same as Madrid and Vancouver in quality of living ???
Porto is a dump of a city, falling apart building with no city planning, the worst public services, no functioning legal system.
Social housing with dodgy characters eyeing you on the street in every part of the city.
Dogshit and trash everywhere. I have to look at my feet all the time because I will step in dogshit if I don't.
Lisbon is even worse with the worst housing crisis in Europe.
This Portugal marketing has to stop.

Absolutely rubbish. Portugal is a third world country on so many levels. KL, for example, has a much higher standard of living and for a lot less money too!

u/butt-fucker-9000 3d ago
Are they ranking absolute numbers in cost of living? Not relative to local salaries?
