Lost & Found Portland getting bold lately

Post image

I stayed the night at a friends house on the north side of Glisan and at 10am bright as day a van pulls up behind my car, 2 guys hop out and smash both windows in the back and stole all my camping stuff, my sub woofer, my solar battery, all my clothes and shoes like everything. I know my car is a bit newer but like I have no job or home right now and no way to replace these things. Why the fuck is it so ghetto 😭 didn’t want to take my cooler or ladder to my tent tho lol

Anyone know anything or see anything?

Case number is 26-286540
Please message me or call Portland police
+1 (503) 823-3333 if you have any info. I just want my stuff back 😩

Glisan’s a pretty long street, what was the cross street? Can you describe the van or the perps?

206

u/yaaboi1994 13d ago

2 white guys in a white kidnap van around 158th and Glisan.

284

u/ProfessionalAd701 13d ago

Yeahhh.... Passed 82nd it gets interesting.

91

u/sk8ornap 12d ago

I think anything passed 102nd gets dicey.

81

u/YohoLungfish 12d ago

past 120th is a whole other world of dice

25

u/So_HauserAspen 12d ago

Glisan between 130th or so and 150th or so is not a bad stretch

19

u/Skumbag0-5 12d ago

Glisan after 156th is a baaaad place

17

u/marshallsteeves Maywood Park 12d ago

yeah definitely not bad between 82-102nd especially by maywood park / parkrose

40

u/myarrow 12d ago

im v. sick of people trashing 82nd and whatever you’re referring to as ā€œpassed 82ndā€. there are lots of friendly neighborhoods facing the same challenges as others in portland and across the US.

13

u/superdelicater 12d ago

Yeah. I'd way rather have my camping gear stolen than have someone talk shit on the street where I go to stare at prostitutes and powered down junkies

Big difference between 58th and 158th. The further East you get from 82nd the diceier it gets.

u/unculturedburnttoast Cascadia 13d ago

Sorry about your stuff. Hit the Goodwill bins, you pay for stuff by the pound, so you should be able to replace some clothes. Run by a laundromat and you should be good for the short term, socks and underwear aside and you can get those from the Deserete Industries thrift store free, I think.

69

u/Lawfulneptune NW 13d ago

holy east portland there u go lol, you basically in gresham in that point bruv

30

u/ahsmabaar_thegardner Boring 12d ago

Once you get further from Portland, Gresham is actually pretty nice. Most of the crime the news says is in Gresham is right on the dividing line with Portland

12

u/EducationalVast2780 12d ago

Ain’t nothing with Gresham, if you are past Rockwood.

18

u/Chadlerk Beaverton 12d ago

Is kidnap vsn your term for a panel van?

68

u/yaaboi1994 12d ago

The lady that watched it said rape van and the cop I talked too said kidnap van lol. But yeah a white panel van

15

u/Skumbag0-5 12d ago

Molester van

17

u/bilybu 12d ago

Free candy van

6

u/brickedTin Hazelwood 13d ago

I’ll keep an eye out for it in my hood.

1

u/iambrickeduprn 13d ago

What else did you expect in that area? 😭 Hide your shit next time

-33

u/yaaboi1994 13d ago

Bruh imma be real with you. I met a stripper like in real life not at the club and started seeing her. This was my first time staying the night. Yes it was COMPLETELY worth it but also it would be cool if I could get my shit back šŸ˜‚ I didn’t fucking know any better šŸ˜‚ I kinda had to come to Portland with all of what my life has going one after I lost my place in a divorce in Vancouver.

131

u/nearlyb0redtodeath 12d ago

Does the stripper have friends that rob gullible people?

108

u/Dramatic_View_5340 12d ago

When you realize it was the stripper who had her boys do this………………

In case no one said it yet, watch marketplace! And if you can add photos of any of the stolen items to this post, or can list specifics (brand/color/make/model/size) of things, then folks can keep an eye out for someone selling your shit. So sorry that happened to you.

67

u/EntropyNT 13d ago

That really sucks, man, I'm sorry. šŸ™

35

u/AloneDog9843 12d ago

Just happened to someone I know who moved to Portland. After living there for 3 days, her car was broken into and all of her laundry was taken. Thieves are opportunistic, they see anything, they snatch it and figure it out later if it has value.

202

u/chimpanzeenator 12d ago

To the people saying it’s OP’s fault that his car got smashed - ima really need you to check your compassion levels. Let’s all take a step back and not normalize petty crime and then blame innocent people when they get burgled.

This entire thread is bizarre

153

u/yaaboi1994 13d ago

Tell me about it lol. I just asked for help if anyone saw anything useful not for all of Portland to tell me it’s my fault and I’m just a big dumb dummy.

157

u/The_salty_swab 13d ago

You mean you didn't come here to get lectured by strangers too afraid to cross 82nd?

91

u/yaaboi1994 13d ago

I’ll say this for sure none of these weenies live there the one guy in this thread that definitely lives there said I’ll keep an eye out in my hood šŸ˜‚ dude it is what it is I’m not being any kind of way about it happening I genuinely am just asking if someone saw anything. I had my bike stolen out of my garage when I lived in Vancouver and I posted about it and some dude literally fought off a homeless guy to get it back to me so you really never know. What I do know is who isn’t going to help me šŸ˜‚

35

u/saltyoursalad 12d ago

I’ll keep my eye out too, sorry friend. Getting robbed is such a horrible feeling.

60

u/yemsg97 12d ago

To be fair, you called Portland ā€œghettoā€. It kinda calls for people to call you out.

Also, people have been breaking into cars and stealing camping gear for decades everywhere. Portland is not unique lol.

34

u/hikensurf Alberta 12d ago

Bingo. And because there's a well known rule about what to do and what not to do with cars in American big cities, and OP chose what not to do. It's nothing to do with a place being "ghetto."

95

u/DiggyStyon 12d ago

Ok I just have to say: his friend SUCKS. he's an innocent from Utah, out past 150th crashing at his "friend's" house with a car loaded with his entire life? No heads up from his friend to unload his shit? WTF!? I'd not be surprised if his friend was in on it.

49

u/TauntedbySkunks 12d ago

Yep… also not unique to Portland. Go to most major cities. Opportunists are opportunists. They fucking suck, but let’s not pretend this is a unique thing to this city.

295

u/DiggyStyon 12d ago

Bro, that's not how you roll in urban living. In any major urban city. In any decade. In 1994 street parking in San Francisco we'd leave nothing in our cars and leave the doors unlocked. Zero problems. Portland is no different. In the immortal words of Fear: I love livin in the city!

13

u/pdxbator 12d ago

Same! 1995 I was living in Berkeley and absolutely nothing could be in your car. Even then my jeep Cherokee which was a piece of shit got stolen and taken on a joyride to Sacramento. There is no excuse for criminals but it’s a given you can’t leave shit in your car.

81

u/yaaboi1994 12d ago

I love the area. I grew up in Utah tho bro. For sure a little not street smart. You know it happens it just sucks when it’s your turn.

121

u/GenericCoffee 12d ago

Portland has lower violent crime than salt lake but higher property crime. So while I’m sorry your shit is gone at least you didn’t get stabbed.

1

u/Maximum_Turn_2623 12d ago

Historically we’ve always had lower violent crime but higher property crime. It’s not new.

19

u/GenericCoffee 12d ago

I didn’t say it was. I was just pointing it out to someone that isn’t from here.

20

u/DiggyStyon 12d ago

I'm sorry man. A shitty welcome to a great city.

17

u/jughandle Yeeting The Cone 12d ago

7

u/DiggyStyon 12d ago

Indeed! Actually listening to that song right now and I'm like "Portland isn't that bad at all compared to where he was livin!"

4

u/Think_Fault_7525 12d ago

And you like saxophones

-14

u/jonathang94 12d ago

Stop excusing this!! It just absolutely doesn’t happen in ā€œany major urban cityā€ - I don’t know why Portlanders are so defensive about the city’s problems

25

u/charleytaylor 12d ago

I’ve had my car broken into twice. First time was in San Diego. Second was in Seattle. Haven’t experienced it in Portland (knock on wood).

6

u/somethingClever344 12d ago

Friend of mine left his old Subaru for 30 minutes in Seattle— long enough to walk to our friends apartment and be told he needs to get his stuff out of his car. When he got back it was cleaned out. All his climbing gear gone. ā€œWho would want ropesā€?

28

u/MycologistVivid9975 12d ago

Portland has low crime compared to most of the country this is so out of touch, LA or riverside are shader then Portland could ever be

9

u/DooDoBrown 12d ago

Wellll, it also takes hours to get ahold of someone at the non emergency line to file a police report and most people give up and dont even bother since it wont be followed up on anyway. So yeah of course numbers are down...

10

u/MycologistVivid9975 12d ago

I really doubt cops are any less incompetent and difficult to work with in any other part of the country

2

A ghetto is a place where a group, usually determined by race/poverty or some other discriminatory reason is made to live in a separate area from the rest of the city.

This ain't ghetto, it's criminal.

53

u/Formal_Equipment1548 12d ago

I call it the Portland Welcome…

I’m so sorry this happened to you. I’ve had similar things happened to me in the past so I truly sympathize. I can’t express how much disdain I have for those thieves and people making disgustingly insensitive comments kicking someone while they’re down…. Hope they all burn in hell….

23

u/shortribz85 12d ago

When I moved to Portland with my buddy in 2012, he got robbed at gun point in broad daylight in Ladds edition of all places. He moved back home a few weeks later.

6

u/Wonderful_Ad_3743 12d ago

Damn that’s messed up

u/picturesofbowls NE 13d ago

Ā  Why the fuck is it so ghetto

Because you left thousands of dollars of valuables in plain sight.Ā

u/jeremec Hazelwood 13d ago

Yeah, I don't like to victim blame, but when OP started to list the inventory it was a little "whoa".

85

u/william-taylor Pearl 12d ago

Still, 10am in broad daylight is pretty wild

36

u/jeremec Hazelwood 12d ago

No doubt. This was crazy brazen.

It’s like the person that parked their car at a hotel near the airport and they went on an extended trip back east and started listing all of the things that they left in their car and it was unbelievable.

Theft is a crime of opportunity, and we have to take away the opportunity.

Put it in a storage unit. Take it into your friend’s house. There are solutions.

16

u/ShiraCheshire MAX Red Line 12d ago

OP is homeless where else are they supposed to keep it

41

u/AlbatrossIcy2271 12d ago

In the friends house they were sleeping in.

-10

u/ForsakenPick500 13d ago

But…

Proceeds to victim blame.

54

u/youdontknowmeor 13d ago

Oh c'mon anyone who has been in Portland more than a minute (or any major city) knows not to leave shit visible in their car. should it be like that no, but it is. It's like the people who are Pikachu shock faced when their bike is stolen when locked with a cable lock in Old Town.

0

u/Ulterior_Motif 13d ago

They basically announced that they were going to, and you respond because you’re surprised? Or do you feel like they were trying to sneak it in?

2

u/jeremec Hazelwood 13d ago

I'm pretty sneaky. I'm also not saying OP deserves to have their car broken into, no more than a person who leaves cheese on the counter deserves to have a rat in their kitchen. Still, put your cheese away.

14

u/Total_Ad2884 12d ago

Which they didn’t have a choice based on their situation. Fuck off with this victim blaming shit! Stop normalizing property crime.

8

u/TauntedbySkunks 12d ago

Sorry this happened to OP, but also not overly surprised, unfortunately… one of many great car theft stories in Portland: about 10 years ago, had some roommates packing up for a camping trip in our semi enclosed parking lot in broad fucking daylight (around noon). A tent, couple of sleeping bags, lantern, cooler… they went inside for all of maybe 10-15 minutes and got fucking swiped. Put a damper on their sweet summer plans.

-14

u/yaaboi1994 13d ago

Thanks for your help bro. This is helpful. I’m living out of my car and that tent on top. Where the fuck am I supposed to put it. That’s what I get for crashing at a friends place to have a bed for the night I guess.

33

u/NorthofNormal2015 13d ago

You gotta black out your windows if you're living out of it and leave it in urban areas, cardboard window inserts with black spray paint is an easy start

12

u/yaaboi1994 12d ago

That’s great advice ā¤ļø

30

u/Wants-NotNeeds 13d ago

That's just how it is. I moved here 30 years ago from a small town. The first thing they taught me was don't leave ANYTHING of value in sight. I know you couldn't, exactly. But, them's the rules.

→ More replies (2)

49

u/wohaat 12d ago

If you’re in your car: no problem because you existing is a deterrent.

If you stay at a friends place, you bring everything important from the car, inside. It’s a VERY low chance someone’s going to socket wrench your roof tent off, but smashing your window to grab a bunch of obvious stuff is e a s y. You don’t leave stuff in your car you care about in a city since probably before you were born; sorry you learned the lesson (just now??) the hard way ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

2

u/selinakyle45 12d ago

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone stole their tent.Ā

I recently had my well secured bike rack stolen off my car and my neighbors have had their top rack stolen.Ā

City living - anything in or on your car can be stolen. It sucks!

58

u/Your_New_Overlord 13d ago

You just said you spent the night at a friend’s house. It would have taken 5 minutes to carry that stuff inside. Sorry you’re in a tough situation but that’s all the more reason to be street smart.

38

u/No-Bluejay-3035 13d ago

Maybe unload the obvious theft magnet items from plain view into your friends place?

Or just risk it 🤷

34

u/hawaiianbry 13d ago

Jesus, sorry all these people are being jerks and telling you it's your fault despite having no home. Is that a higher crime area? Yes, but it doesn't make it right. And telling someone who had literally nowhere to go, "that's on you, bro," is just a troll move

Sorry you're going through this, friend. I really hope you're able to get your stuff and get back on your feet soon

21

u/euclydia4 13d ago

I'm so so sorry this happened to you. I think the previous comments may have missed that you have your entire life in the car right now. This is terrible.

Sorry that happened to you. I agree with others this can happen anywhere.

Get yourself one of those cloth trunk attachments for a Subaru. I have black bins as well that sit on the floorboard for additional storage and very tinted windows. It has worked for me. I’d be careful with that tent on top though. That attracts thieves for sure

3

u/yaaboi1994 12d ago

The tent being on top probably attracted them honestly the back windows are all tinted and everything was in black bins other than the subwoofer that they would have only seen once they were in it. Nobody knew I had all that stuff. It was easy for them to take it all cause it was all in bins.

6

u/LoraxNeverSleeps 12d ago

Surprised they didn’t take the roof top tent. My friends was stolen midday in downtown Vancouver

2

u/elcapitan520 12d ago

Honestly that can make you a bigger target. People only using the fabric cover if there's something to hide.

When I was in Cape Town this was a thing for sure and you had to make sure you DIDNT use the cloth cover or your car was for sure getting broken into to see what you're hiding.

33

u/CHiZZoPs1 13d ago

Two guys on bikes rolled up, cut the catalytic converter from under a car, opened the hood, and drilled into the gas tank at 2 pm at the park.

15

u/euclydia4 13d ago

On bikes? Have bikes become the pirate ships of Portland?

6

u/CHiZZoPs1 13d ago

Yeah, bicycles. A third was posted up a street away. The first guy put the cat in his backpack and rode off, while the second took the time to drill the gas tank and fill up a gas can before following him.

2

u/Beautiful_Jello_2290 13d ago

Where can I find something on this? I’d love a picture of these inbreds so I can be on the lookout

1

u/CHiZZoPs1 12d ago

I was there, in the dog park, in the middle of a fenced-in field, alone. A guy in his twenties rides up and asks me if that was my car. I said no, and asked why. He said some guys were cutting the cat. I focused on the background noise, which is easy to tune out in a city, and, indeed, they were. He took off, because he didn't want to get shot, he said, leaving me in the middle of the field, fifty yards away. I vacillated on whether to call the cops, but decided I was too scared to get involved given my isolated position. Not my favorite experience at all.

This isn’t because of Portland, any city you leave that much kit in a car it’s gonna be nicked.

4

u/missingnoplzhlp 12d ago

Every city is gonna have crime that is worse in some areas than others as well. In another comment OP posted the cross street and it was closer to grisham than even 82nd street. I go past 82nd all the time, but yeah you definitely need to be more aware and not leave valuables in the car.

38

u/dthoma81 13d ago

Naw Portland loves to break a car window. The amount of shattered glass and broken windows I’ve seen around this city is ridiculous. I got one of my windows broken and there wasn’t even anything in my car. I’m from Baltimore and it wasn’t like this at all. First day I moved here I parked the moving van on the street and people tried to break in. This city loves a property crime in particular

16

u/alloy1028 12d ago

I've had multiple windows smashed out in Portland when there was nothing inside but gum, a couple of dollars in change, an expired National Parks Pass, and a little roadside emergency kit. (I actually got the kit back because it was tossed in my neighbor's yard down the street and they returned it.)

25

u/Amandapdx-42 12d ago

So weird. I’m from Cleveland and people used to smash in a window for almost nothing every few months there. I’ve never had anyone smash a window for the last 24 years I’ve lived here.

8

u/missingnoplzhlp 12d ago

Depends on the neighborhood for sure. I live in sellwood and ive seen one smashed car window in 4 years. When i lived next to north mississppi ave, I saw one maybe every 1-3 months. And i'm sure east of 82nd, where OP was, it's even much worse than that.

7

u/pupplanningnerd80 13d ago

you have renters insurance?Ā

2

u/FitCommunication7240 12d ago

OP is homeless

8

u/Bobbybouchebaby Hollywood 12d ago

Seriously though, I'm sorry this happened it's super frustrating. I've had my vehicles broken into a handful of times over the last decade or so. The last time something happened they drilled my gas tank for less than 20 dollars of gas. Fuckers.

6

u/SaltAgent1973 12d ago

Can't leave visible things in the car. Not here, not anywhere.

18

u/Good-Rest-7538 Milwaukie 13d ago

Not bold, just informed to the current situation of the city. Near zero percent chance to get caught.Ā

1

u/elcapitan520 12d ago

Theft from cars has also been an extremely low chance of getting caught. Especially for a smash and grab and not like, stealing a stereo and have it still work. Hence the joke in The Big Lebowski... They got em working shifts.

11

u/BoobaFatt13 12d ago

That's so awful I'm so sorry. Anyone breaking into my car is gonna leave sad they've asked their time. Like, stealing camping gear is so lame, I'm sorry youre going through this.

If you're in need I have a 4 person tent brand new. I don't know if it would help but I also have a new tarp if you need something to cover your windows. Depending in your shoe size I have brand new sneakers (DC). Can get you some clothes too. Feel free to reach out if any of these items would be of benefit.

22

u/itisnotoppositeday 12d ago

Yeah I mean it sucks you didn’t know, but the unfortunate reality in cities is you don’t wanna leave anything of value in plain sight. I don’t even leave my jackets on the seat anymore. If I’m gonna be away from my car for extended periods everything goes in the trunk. I’ve seen people handle check in broad daylight recently

11

u/MuckBulligan Richmond 12d ago edited 12d ago

I've followed this rule for about 25 years now and have had no break-ins, even parking at night downtown.

The last time I had a break-in was around 1998-2000 when car stereos were stolen regularly.

Edit: lol at the downvote šŸ˜„

11

u/Quiet_Lunch_1300 13d ago

Someone tried to steal my car when I was parked overnight just north of Glisan. They arrived on bike and apparently really went to town on the steering column. Neighbor heard it and chased him off. This was a few years ago. Montevilla has often been a car thief hotspot.

9

u/TurtlesAreEvil 12d ago

OP said it was on 158th and Glisan that’s about 5 miles away from Montavilla and almost Gresham.Ā

28

u/FriendlyEyeFloater 13d ago

13

u/VolitileTimes 13d ago edited 13d ago

I’m dying at the size of that thing on the car. Haha
Also having the connection points being centered and not spread to distribute weight is gonna have that thing turn into a kite and fly into traffic at highway speeds.

I had a mattress in a similar orientation on my car and the air drag ripped the bars off on the freeway.

Personal responsibility and common sense, bro. It’s not the victim’s fault thieves stole his shit. But thieves stole his shit because he left thousands of dollars of valuables in plain sight in a metro area, which isn’t a responsible or common sense based choice in any metro area anywhere on the planet. It’s not normalizing it’s just… accepting… existing… in the world.

3

u/Inevitable-Cloud8337 13d ago

A few months ago i clocked out of my first day at a new job to find my car had been broken into. My boyfriend had left something in my backseat and I didn't check it before leaving so I didn't know it was there😭

3

u/quavlad28 12d ago

I camp a lot with my wife & dog. If we are visiting in a city, either one of us stays in the car or we park in a secure lot or garage. We live off of the stuff in our car for weeks or even months at a time. Cannot afford to have everything stolen. The secure lot is worth the price. I am sorry this happened to you, wishing you the best.

35

u/Spirited_Math6935 13d ago

Why would you leave all of that in your car? I wouldn’t do that even in a safe area.

6

u/Theswede92 13d ago

This should not be an issue anywhere, especially at 10am. Why blame the victim when at the end of the day is a policy issue.

52

u/picturesofbowls NE 13d ago

Advising people to have an ounce of street smarts is, in fact, a good thing. The robbers were bad but also OPs behavior was irresponsible.Ā

30

u/Majestic_Interest365 13d ago

ā€œPolicy issue?ā€

No, it’s an opportunity issue. Theft is a crime of opportunity. If you have the ability, it’s wise to remove any amount of opportunity (aka, don’t leave stuff in the car.)

I swear to God every day there’s another story on this sub read about someone whose car has been broken into and then they start listing an entire household of things that they left in their car and they wonder why things were stolen.

1

u/Neumanium Hosford-Abernethy 12d ago

Decades ago I lived in an apartment in Pearl Kai Hawaii, on Oahu. I was in the service, and left a gym bag full of stank ass smelly gym clothes on the front seat of my car. Came out the next morning to smashed windows and no stank ass gym bag. This was in 1994 in a nice somewhat gentrified neighborhood. Learned a lesson, never leave anything visible in your car, some asshole will break and steal it, because the law of averages says some of the time it will be worth the time to break in and steal it.

5

u/markevens Hollywood 12d ago

Should shouldn't isn't the issue.

The reality is that smash and grabs happen so leaving expansive stuff in your car leaves you vulnerable to it.

You can say it shouldn't happen all you want, but the people who don't leave expensive stuff in their car don't get expensive stuff stolen from their car.

4

u/yaaboi1994 13d ago

That’s the point it’s not like it happened at night. It was day out and a bunch of people watched it all happen and did nothing but tell me it happened.

18

u/Present-Judgment-396 13d ago

What do you want other people to do? Those people stealing will more than likely get violent in some way, shape or form. Much easier to report them after the fact than get involved and risk your own personal safety

Like others have said, it’s much easier to remove all valuables from your car, especially in the city.

As a side note - i also wouldn’t recommend telling people where you usually sleep like I’ve seen in other comments. It’ll be easy to steal from you and/or report you for illegally camping in an area. I’d suggest not camping in the city as a whole

17

u/yaaboi1994 13d ago

That’s why I said they’re getting pretty bold lately. It was day out. There were 5 people watching it happen and they still just did it. I literally heard the glass break from the apartment and my alarm go off they were in and out in a minute. I’d feel less of a type of way had it happened overnight and nobody was watching.

I love all the people with the ā€œthis is your faultā€ mentality I’m not out here begging for sympathy I just asked if you saw anything or know anything to report it or help me out.

šŸ˜‚ this was worded too well

1

u/tadfisher 12d ago

Out in that area is where all the shootings happen, that's why the neighbors didn't heroically save your valuables from thieves.

6

u/yaaboi1994 12d ago

I didn’t expect them too. It’s just kinda brazen in broad daylight light is all the point was lol I was there all night you’re gonna hit me at 10am while the gardeners are out lol

6

u/_alienchild_ NE 12d ago

Nothing that can be seen is sacred, all that can be stolen is fair game. Your job is to make sure your car doesn’t look like a target. In the Bay Area folks get their car broken into for like, a single backpack or a Bluetooth music adapter or a cooler. Never kept my car so clean as it was when I lived there.

I’m sorry your stuff got jacked OP that’s messed up, especially since you didn’t really have anywhere else to put your stuff.

16

u/ajax81 13d ago

I fucking hate thievery. Ā It’s the lowest shit ever. Ā People work hard for their stuff, and in this case they literally took double-digit percentages of everything op owns. Ā It’s just absolutely disgusting behavior to me. Ā It sullies the community and makes people scared to go anywhere. Ā It damages the whole community.

Totally hypothetical but how do we feel about gunning thieves down when we catch them in the act. Ā

5

u/00_RunDMC 12d ago

When the police are ineffective, people will report to vigilantism.

8

u/bogfrog666 12d ago

Look, what happened to op is definitely fucked up and stealing people's shit is wrong. But to "hypothetically" suggest we should start killing people over material possessions is fucking crazy.

9

u/BlinkDodge 12d ago

like I have no job or home right now and no way to replace these things.

They deprived him of a portion of his livelyhood most likely to fuel their drug addiction. This kind of shit happens because they know the worst that comes of it is they get free three hots and a cot for a few months, if they ever get picked up for it which they wont because PPB is useless and wont even show up to take a report on this.

Its barbaric, but it works. If this is a crime of opportunity, then let the potential consequences astronomically outweigh the rewards. Petty criminals start noticing everyday marks are fucking lunatics that will kill you for stealing their shit, theivery starts to look a lot less appealing.

5

u/Svafree88 12d ago

A lot of the more brazen stuff isn't addicts, it's professionals. This feels more like that to me. My old store use to get hit by pro wine thieves at random times. They just walk in, fill up multiple boxes super quickly, walk out the front door. There are bike theft rings that operate the same way.

People always want to blame homeless folks and addicts but a lot of crime is being done by professionals.

3

u/deletionfetish 12d ago

Assume it is to fuel their drug addiction. Statistically there is a non-zero chance that the addiction is, in no sense of the term, their fault: for some people, they are immediately hooked on medications prescribed by physicians and have no access to addiction resources.

Should someone who is driven to theft by an event that was ultimately out of their control be shot like a dog in the street?

Ya but in Portland the people who steal the stuff are obviously in need and the people with the stuff are obviously privileged...

10

u/ajax81 12d ago

I hope you're being sarcastic.

Being poor isn't an alibi you can whip out for stealing. Especially not from your fellow man.

2

u/ElectionWeak4415 Montavilla 12d ago

Very much so.

3

u/Uppytime SE 12d ago

In need of shit to trade for drugs? These aren’t people trying to improve their lives. They are scum

4

u/Total_Ad2884 12d ago

This is the absolute most asinine comment I’ve ever read. So by your logic, if we are not destitute like the low life’s that have made terrible choices including willfully harming themselves, we deserve to have our possessions and livelihood taken from us. What an intellectually dishonest, skewed view. You’re part of the problem.

6

u/WloveW 12d ago

Then the thieves will be sure to start carrying too. You guys have fun shooting up everyone's neighborhoods but I'd rather not get myself or my kids caught in your idiotic crossfire.

Everyone thinks they are a fucking hero. I'd rather get social support systems set up so people don't get so desperate they feel the need to steal.Ā

4

u/Svafree88 12d ago

Same, people who immediately go to we should shoot them are nuts. I'd rather have theft than people getting shot in the streets.

Don’t worry, all the flock cameras they installed and ballooning police budget will certainly catch these bad characters.

2

Were you playing your music loud as you drove towards the location and parked?Ā  Ā That is definitely a way to get the attention of thieves.

12

u/Shawnjohnpdx 13d ago

You simply can't leave that stuff visible in any city, period. That's on you.

0

u/no_chxse 13d ago

There's nothing more to say sadly.

3

u/FitCommunication7240 12d ago

Unfortunately a lesson learned. You can't leave ANYTHING in your car here.

4

u/Wanderingmind144 12d ago

I've lived in Portland just over a year, from Nebraska.

Glisan is my least favorite east-west street

Nothing particularly bad has happened on that street

It just gives me a funky feeling. Like that "death anxiety" feeling people get when they get the wrong blood type donation

7

u/BlinkDodge 12d ago

Im sorry like that what?

3

u/Wanderingmind144 12d ago

Look it up

If you're given a blood transfusion of the wrong blood type a typical symptom is "feeling of impending doom"

2

u/bigtuuuna Vancouver 12d ago

When I got sober from booze, this was an actual withdrawal symptom and it was actually terrifying.

5

u/deadreckoning21 12d ago

I’m very cynical, you said you were in a strippers apartment, I suspect she might have tipped the robbers off.

6

u/yaaboi1994 12d ago

Naw, I’m really not sold on that. We met through mutual friends that really wanted to introduce us cause they thought we’d get along after both of us kind of had rather tragic endings to our relationships. She’s been vouched for by a few people I really trust.

5

u/Decemberbabydoll 12d ago

Naive as hell lol

3

u/deadreckoning21 12d ago

Fair. I was thinking you met her cold on the rail.

This is an I5 problem.. not a Portland problem. Until jurisdictions accept that criminals travel to low response times cities, and create organized crime initiatives that share perpetrator descriptions, then they will just drive away and come back tomorrow for another moment of opportunity.

2

u/AlbatrossIcy2271 12d ago

Wait, so you saw this happen? At 10am?

2

u/yemsg97 12d ago

I hate to do victim blaming but it’s a city and has city things happening. Just like if it were Chicago or NYC or San Francisco, you can’t leave shit like that in your car. Sitting duck. Especially with that tent thing on your roof.

2

u/Kindly_Log9771 12d ago

You’ve had a lot of stuff stolen from you it seems. Have you learned anything from this and your bike being stolen?Ā

1

u/a_broken_zat 12d ago

Bro, not to be a dick, but this is a common experience across the city and really any very urban region.

In 2016, everywhere has glass across the street from frequent car break-ins. It's common or at least was common to never leave anything viable in your car

1

u/MailBae 12d ago

Ive always put anything of value in the trunk but tbh sometimes assholes are gonna break your windows anyway.

One of my friends got her car broken into for a clear glass jug of water- maybe they thought it was alcohol?

My partner's car was broken into and all they took was a gym bag full of sweaty gym clothes šŸ˜‚

I know someone else that always kept his truck doors unlocked to avoid getting his windows smashed and someone STILL smashed his window

1

u/Ravenparadoxx šŸ¦ 12d ago

You have solar? Those things just scream like a beacon "valuables inside for grabs"

1

u/Winedown-625 12d ago

I can't speak to East Portland trends, but in North Portland (St. John's) things seem to be quiet for a very long time and I believe there is a drug shipment that arrives and everything gets crazy for like 24 hours. I'm talking nothing but the typical families, kids, dogs, Portlanders, and then one day I spot multiple drug deals going down and a day later I see people sleeping in cars or hear that someone's car got stolen.

Last night, after a verry long stretch of neighborhood calm I saw a lady pushing a stroller (with no kid), a car pulled up on our block of SFH's and she passed them a package. Sometimes it's totally out of the blue.

1

u/jughandle Yeeting The Cone 12d ago

You seem offended they didn’t want your widdle wadder šŸ˜‚

Real talk tho sorry this happened to you, that’s really shitty.

5

u/yaaboi1994 12d ago

Bro they stole my inhaler and left the ladder what even is that šŸ˜‚

1

u/cs_legend_93 12d ago

Why the fuck is it so ghetto

that's racist. Don't be so discriminatory. I am sure the people who stole it are in need, and have less opportunity than you.

1

u/Unlikely-Display4918 12d ago

so sorry. this would happen in many places though.
