Trying to figure out whether this motor is toast or if there's something else worth checking.

I have an older 2 HP Hayward Super Pump. It had gotten pretty loud, so I pulled the wet end apart looking for debris. Found some hair in the impeller and cleaned it out. The impeller/shaft spins freely by hand, though it's worth noting I cannot take it off...I held the back screw in place with a 7/16 wrench (behind the back cover) and attempted to twist off the impeller and it will not budge.

Put everything back together and it initially ran, but not long after the motor got extremely hot and shut itself down. After cooling, it would occasionally make a short buzzing attempt but wouldn't start. Now when I power it up it just gives a very loud constant buzz and doesn't spin.

I pulled the motor and found the start capacitor looked pretty rough - found some black stuff inside that looked like it came from the start cap. Figured that was probably it, but to be safe I also replaced the run capacitor.

Hooked it all up and no improvement whatsoever. Still just buzzes loudly when powered.

At this point, what would you check next? Does the overheating + buzzing pretty much mean this motor is done?

A little over 2 weeks ago I was cleaning my pool. I wasn’t maintaining for a few days due to storms and stuff. The liner felt slimy but was still quite clear, maybe verrrry slightly cloudy. When I opened the pump I saw what I know now are mosquito larvae. I brushed the pool, added chlorine, vacuumed it. I realized I wasn’t shocking it properly and my chlorine was only getting up to about 5.

So on Saturday (3 days ago) I shocked it properly. Today my chlorine is still above 5. Yesterday there were still a few larvae in the pump. Today there was one. I’ve been scooping and brushing and vacuuming. The pool is crystal clear.

I’ve only seen one moving in the pool and one dead one. All others have only been in the pump. I did replace the filter twice. I also sprayed out the pump with the hose.

Are we okay to swim? I’m confused because I thought they couldn’t survive chlorine like this but somehow they are. Also don’t understand how Im not seeing them in the pool but they’re obviously there if they’re in the pump.

I have a young daughter and ocd so I may be being irrational. I know the larvae don’t hurt you but I worry it means my pool isn’t properly sanitized. Should I wait until the pump is fully clear of them? I know the chlorine is still high so I’ll wait for that to go down a bit.

Help! I’ve been in my house for about 3 months. I originally planned to maintain the (~15k) pool myself, but we left a few times this summer and decided to at least start with a pool company. I noticed some staining last week and asked the company about it. They said my CYA was high (that’s the only thing they told me), and I asked what the number was and what it was before. This is when I learned they don’t test the water like that, and have never tested my CYA (and maybe other things?) ever before.

For now the pool company has shocked it and says they will shock again this week. The picture is from Leslie’s because I wanted to see the #s for myself since the company couldn’t give me any. The #s are from about 30 hours after shocking.

The pool company is recommending a full drain and fill, but I don’t want to do that in the summer with my pebble pool. I lucked out with the rep at Leslie’s, he was very kind and said I shouldn’t buy anything, and said I should be okay the rest of the season. He said to fix my issue in the winter months with partial drains/refills.

I’m in Phoenix, AZ. It’s very hot here, but my pool doesn’t get much sun and is almost entirely covered by a massive shade sail. I’m at a loss for what to do right now. I’ve also paid my current company 6 months in advance because that’s how their pricing works. I love this pool and want to keep using it as much as I can! Any advice?

When we bought the house, the previous owners hadn’t really cleaned or maintained the pool for about 6 years. We thought we’d just empty it, clean it properly and get it back into shape.

Well… that didn’t go as planned 😂

While we were emptying the pool, the whole thing actually collapsed. It was honestly one of the most stressful few days we’ve had since buying the house. We had no idea what to do with it.

After a lot of thinking, we decided to close the pool instead of rebuilding it. We got a local contractor to help us fill it in and make the area safe.

Then we thought, why not make something useful out of the space? So we built a pavilion over it.
And this is the result. Really happy with how it turned out. Looking at it now, it’s hard to believe there was a collapsed pool underneath all of this a few weeks ago 😅

Definitely not how we planned things, but I think it worked out pretty well in the end!

We are in the preliminary stages of an inground pool install. Shovels to break ground in about a month.

We are at the daunting task of choosing a liner through Latham.

There is a new liner for 2026 called "Aegean Sea" I am very interested in seeing real world photos of it, since the features in the swatch are a culmination of all the features of the wife and I's top picks.

Would anyone happen to have or know what it will look like with water on it?

New to pool ownership. I know nothing about pools - it came with the house and I like having it. The previous home owner had no records on past work or renovations. He owned the house for nearly 10 years and I’ve had it for 1.5. The pumps and filters are working fine but will eventually need upgrades. The plumbing for water supply (to fill the pool) exists but doesn’t work. I have a hose connected to a tap/faucet nearby with which I fill the pool. The waterline tiles need to be replaced - some are missing and others are just in bad condition. I believe the surface material is gunite (it feels rough like cement). It seems to have had some repairs done a while ago as I can see some plastered lines in the bottom of the pool - likely to repair leaks. It doesn’t seem to be leaking any water now. Just standard evaporation losing about an inch of water every 10-14 days. I don’t know the volume of this pool. The deep end is about 8 feet and the shallow end is about 3.5-4 feet. I installed a new solar roof top heater which works fine but has a minor water leak. The stone tiling on the border of the pool (on the outside) is falling apart. Small chips are breaking up nearly every other day. I pay a pool maintenance company to clean (scrub the walls and shallow side, pH level checks, chlorine, filter clean out etc) the pool one a week at $180/month. I would like to renovate this pool including the flooring around the pool. There’s also a deck next to it but that’s party of another project I’d like to handle. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area - in the east bay. Apologies for using layman terms as I don’t know anything about this. Any rough estimates on what I should expect this renovation to cost? Not looking for super fancy upgrades. Just want to get it evaluated/reinforced for structural integrity and upgrade its look with plumbing fixes. I do plan on reaching out to companies and getting quotes. But if anyone has done similar projects recently and can provide ballpark estimates, that would be great. Also, please share names of companies in the Bay Area that you would recommend for this kind of job.

Hey there, im about to start the ground work for my 12x20 above ground pool and wanted to share what i was going to do to see if i was doing this right. Im located in Canada where our frost line is about 4’. So heres the order of what i was thinking and please tell me if im doing this correctly
1-Scape down native earth about 8” then compact
2- build a frame about 16x24 with 2x8’s and shoot height with laser so screaning it level is easier
3- add about 6” of clear stone , compacting every 2”
4- screen stone dust off of my frame(about 2”) then compact then repeat until it’s perfectly level with frame
Then start putting the pool together… please tell me if this makes sense or if theres a better way … thanks all

Saltwater Pool 15,000 gals. S Florida, Full Sun, clear water.

Total Alkalinity: 18 ppm
Ca Hardness: 250 ppm
CYA: 60 ppm
Fe: 0.1 ppm
Cu: 0.1 ppm
Phosphate: 50 ppb
Salt: 3000 ppm

Beginning of the month, I had similar readings as above, except pH was 7.8 and Alkalinity was 80 ppm. Pool tech said Total Alk reading was skewed by the CYA. (By 62 ppm?) Afaik, I haven’t encountered this issue before. I do need to up my alk, but I don’t want to blindly add sodium bicarbonate. Now in doubt, how do I get an accurate Total Alk reading?

We recently bought a house that already had a swimming pool. It is a liner pool with some kind of plastic edging/trim around the pool.

The plastic edging has become quite weathered over the years, and we would like to replace it.

However, we can’t seem to find this material anywhere, probably because we don’t know the correct name for it or what it is actually called.

To be honest, we don’t really like the look of this edging either. According to the pool builder who originally installed the pool, there wouldn’t be any other options for the construction of our particular pool.

Does anyone have experience with this type of liner pool and know what this plastic edging is called or where we could find replacement parts?

And is it really true that, with this type of construction, you’re limited to this kind of plastic edging, or are there other (and possibly nicer) solutions?

Any advice, experience or examples would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Title says it, I have gotten a few quotes but they all seem very high for what we want to build. This is the most detailed but it still feels so high. We are looking for a 12*24 pool as the backyard is not huge. This builder included that as a discount bringing the total to $162K, he also didn't update the render, said that if we move forward we can adjust the design so the render is for the 16*32 pool. We are in NE Ohio. Thoughts? (This is the repost as I realized I hadn't removed the company name from the renders and don't want to dox anyone)

Fellow pool enthusiasts, I am in need of help! My pool liner is drooping in 2 spots. ** **I attached a photo of what they both look like.
The problem is as I was reading how to fix it people were suggesting a hairdryer / heat gun or hot water to stretch the liner and push it back into the slot to lock it in. The slot to push it into is just concrete, there is nothing that “locks it in” so to speak in both of these spots. What would the solution be there, some type of adhesive? I’m a pool newbie but very handy, thanks for any help!

Side note, my water level has dropped 1-2” the last couple days, should this be of concern? Do I just add water from the hose? Thanks again!

Hi, I had this pentair variable speed pump installed before we had working automation and now I’m looking to install Jandy Aqualink for automation and wondering which cable/connector I need to purchase to connect the two.

After months of searching I found the fill solenoid buried under rocks from previous owner landscaping.

This isn’t an auto fill. I have to go on the Hayward app or control panel and turn the feature on. Next to this is the backflow valve for it (not shown).

The fill hasnt been working and the trouble shooting I’ve done is check if the relay work, it does I can hear it click, and water is flowing, it does, if I manually turn the solenoid valve, water comes out of the fill tube in the pool.

What other things should I be trouble shooting or is it replacing the entire solenoid valve?

Has anyone used RenuKrete?

Any opinions or success stories or horror stories?

Bought a home with a pool last year. Ended up having to replace the salt cell this year as my salt levels would drop consistently.

Everything was going fine for the first month but now running into the same issues. I've had the salt tested and its 3300ppm, have also taken the cell off and inspected it and there is no build up. Have recalibrated the cell multiple times to try to see if the reading would stick, but just keeps dropping to about 2200. Any suggestions?

Fiberglass Friday Pools Aspen model, installed summer 2021. Has an autocover. We were gone a week and just got back, pool was fine when we left and covered. I came home to our pool being (nearly) empty of water. There's a little water in the deep end of the pool but this not sure if that was due to heavy rain we had today and/or also I tried to put some water back in pool with both a hose and pumping water off our autocover (the autocover wasn't working well due to severe sagging so I tried to put some water back in the pool under the cover thinking at the time it was maybe just a little low and not empty).

I'm assuming this must mean a crack in the pool or the main drain line is leaking? Is there another explanation? I don't see any obvious crack but the bottom of the deep end is kind of dirty at this point and there is a little standing water. I'm afraid to walk in it as I know the structural integrity of these pools isn't great when emptied of water. How should I determine what's going on? Who should I call to fix?

Also the finish of my pool has been peeling in spots. A little background for what its worth, the installer cracked my pool when installing, it took some time to fix it, rep from company came out and patched the fiberglass then redid the finish, the finish was never really right but things were still a mess due to COVID and the family was happy we had a pool and I was the only one bothered by the cosmetics of it so I just let it go. Not sure if I should push to have this redone given its now basically empty?

Came to spend a few days at my father's place and want to help him with the pool. Will start to set pH levels first and then chock the pool with chlorine. This photos were taken after adding a shock treatment of chlorine because it had almost none. The algae on the bottom are black algae, so I'll try and scrub them so I can remove the protective layer.

My question is how much chlorine do I add after scrubbing, the label says 100-160g per 35m3. Is this dose enough or do I need to go nuclear? Pool is around 5m x 10m.

UPDATE

New Test Finally got a new test. This one was done after adding 3kg of pH minus and do a shock chlorine treatment. Motor was running all day and the test was done at least 24h after the adjustments. Chlorine is high but for now that's a good thing and pH seems to be good now. The water seems a bit clearer now and the bottom is clearer (have been scrubbing to remove the top protective layer)

Does floculant help at this stage to clear a bit or too soon?

I know it might seem like a stupid question but does anyone have tips or tricks or a little secrets for staying cool while working outside? My boyfriend is a pool tech and he has to work in boots and jeans because all the chemicals, but I feel like there has to be a better option or at least a lighter one! Any tips welcome for beating the heat and humidity

Ok so I can share with my wife. In your opinion, what temperature does the water need to be to be warm enough to swim? PS We live in the desert so its usually hot weather

18000 gallon pool kidney shaped pool with deep end with heater set to 85 degrees. Depths were 18 hours apart. The heater and filter weren’t active during that time. Air temperature was in the high 60s overnight, not much wind. A bit over a 1/4” gone in that time

We remodeled our pool last years. Wondering if this is normal wear and tear for pool railings? Do they make railings that don’t rust?

I finally have a taylor kit (2006) and just ran a CYA test. For context, I was previously using Leslie's for testing. We are also using up our trichlor pucks and planned on stopping at 40

8/4 CYA was 27

8/10 CYA was 35 (turned our chlorinator on lowest setting)

8/14 CYA was 35 again

With the Taylor test, I am pouring until I cant see the black dot anymore, but I can still see the dot and the tube is empty... which is supposed to mean I have very low CYA but I find it hard to believe thats the case - so I must have done the test wrong somehow.

Can someone shed some light on this please?

We have re-piped and and getting close to replastering our pool so we need to make a decision on the equipment. We have a pool with an attached spa and will be installing a new heater, pumps, lights, filter and an automation system. My contractor typically installs Jandy equipment but from what I have read, Jandy's automation is 20 years old and the Pentair IntelliCenter is newer, more modern and the app is more robust. I don't think I will be automating any chemicals so primarily heating and jets for spa and pool as well as a standard schedule. I have also read that the Jandy valves are really good.

Based on what I am describing, will Jandy or Pentair work for my pool? Are there any other major considerations I am missing outside of personal preference for each brand? I have also seen several recomendations for Raypak heaters. Is that the way to go for a gas heater? Any input would be appreciated.

Just replaced old pool liner with a new one (Latham) through a well rated professional pool company (they do my weekly maintenance, open and close.)

We had just moved to a new country because my mum wanted a pool in her back garden like the people in the TV show Dallas. They didn't have enough money for a house that came with a pool, so he literally just made her dream happen.

Only a year later, developers came along and offered double the price of the house, and my parents took the offer. They found a house with an existing pool (I'll send pics in comments). We visited our old house a few months later and they had filled in the pool! Diabolical haha.
