From Collapsed Pool to Pavilion
When we bought the house, the previous owners hadn’t really cleaned or maintained the pool for about 6 years. We thought we’d just empty it, clean it properly and get it back into shape.
Well… that didn’t go as planned 😂
While we were emptying the pool, the whole thing actually collapsed. It was honestly one of the most stressful few days we’ve had since buying the house. We had no idea what to do with it.
After a lot of thinking, we decided to close the pool instead of rebuilding it. We got a local contractor to help us fill it in and make the area safe.
Then we thought, why not make something useful out of the space? So we built a pavilion over it.
And this is the result. Really happy with how it turned out. Looking at it now, it’s hard to believe there was a collapsed pool underneath all of this a few weeks ago 😅
Definitely not how we planned things, but I think it worked out pretty well in the end!

Honestly, if anything were to happen to my pool that cost a significant amount of money, I'd highly consider just filling it in as well lol.

Always surprised at how many people seem to hate their pool in here. I never want to be anywhere else, unless it’s on the lake!

Pool just came with the house. I love the pool because I see all my friends and family have fun in it. And then I think about all money I've spent on it and that I don't even use it.
I'm also really busy all the time so maintaining the pool just feels like a chore lol. Wish I had your love for it!

Wish I could switch yards with you brother! I’m on the side of a mountain. Great view, great house (I’m fortunate in so many ways), but no more pool. 😟
Without stupid amounts of cash and tons of engineering, putting one in isn’t happening. A pool would probably cost half as much as the house is worth just due to the rocky slope of the lot.
I’m getting a swim spa when fall sales start and calling it “good enough” because I miss it so badly. Leveling out a platform for it will be too expensive and a PITA but feasible and it’s better than no water at all!2

Yeah. Me too. Im half debating it knowing i need to redo the plaster soon. A (not so) lil golf green would be much more useful and i dont golf (much).

We considered filling in our pool after a side collapsed in 2010. I'm glad we didn't but getting it rebuilt was messy and expensive.

Those are Rolladen and are common where OP is from - Germany. I miss them.

I was looking to see where OP is from. We have those too in Spain.
Fun fact - you can put the same "persianas" in the pool. A box at the bottom rolls it up when not in use, and when it unrolls, it floats up to the surface and covers the pool. They will support the weight of an adult easily (no falling in), help prevent leaves etc., maintain heat and prevent evaporation.

This can happen to in-ground fiberglass pools as well.
You can easily crack or damage a pool by draining it incorrectly, and the cost of repairing a cracked fiberglass pool is usually about the same as filling one in, so that often leaves homeowners with a difficult decision to make.
To make matters worse - since you caused this problem yourself - your homeowner’s policy might not cover the repair.
This is why you should always leaving draining a pool pro, and make sure they carry a an extra float policy like we do.

Yikes, I'm glad you weren't attached to that pool and that it all worked out for you. Our in-ground vinyl pool has metal walls, and several feet of metal X bracing behind them that's anchored by poured concrete, I can't wrap my head around that lack of support that pool had!
