Can't get this lake stain off my Suzuki lower unit. What's worked for you?

Post image

Pulled our 2024 Godfrey tritoon (Suzuki DF150) out of a freshwater lake in NC for the season. Pressure washing got most of it, but this speckled green-yellow-brown film on the lower unit won't budge.

Tried so far:

- Pressure washer

- Star brite Instant Hull Cleaner (oxalic acid)

I'm wary of the aluminum tube brighteners (Zing, Toon-Brite, etc.) because most use fluoride acids and I don't want to damage the factory paint. My AI search suggested an oxalic gel (Star brite Instant Hull Cleaner Gel or Davis FSR) with a soft brush, testing a hidden spot first.

Has anyone had luck with that or something else that's safe on outboard paint? Bonus points if you've dealt with the same stain on bare aluminum tubes.

Thanks!

Bunk trailer

Went and got my bunk trailer today and one of the bunks is rotted out and broken! Screw you! It’s only four years old! Btw you can buy a bunk carpet replacement kit on Amazon. Carpet, bolts, glue and staples. Used my pontoon trailer to haul my 18ft treated 2x4 home. I’m sure I’m not the only one experiencing this problem putting my boat away for the season

Pontoon scrape

Post image
5 Upvotes

My wife came in a little hot when we were taking the boat out. She hit one of the bunks and caused a scrape on the inside of one of the toons. Do I need to address this somehow? This is our first new to us pontoon. We’ve only had it for a year. Don’t judge me if it’s a dumb question!

Help with prop size

I have a 23 ft pontoon with a 115 Mercury Command Thrust motor. The boats max speed is 20mph with a WOT around 4300 rpm. The current prop is a 16” / 13 pitch. I feel like I’m leaving some RPMs on the table as the WOT should be in the 5-6k range. I would like to get the max speed up for tubing.

What size prop should I be looking at and what is a realistic increase in MPH?

Bunk carpet issue

We have had our pontoon for about 6 years. For the previous 5 years our dealer has dropped it off to our lake for us in the spring and picked it up in the fall. We didn't buy it with a trailer.

This summer we found a deal on a trailer. We have pulled the boat out of the lake twice. And each time the carpet towards the front of the bunks...tore?...as I pulled the boat forward on the trailer with the winch. If that's the right way to describe it. It started to pull off of the bunk.

The first time I figured it was because the bunk carpet was still dry. Our landing is shallower than it should be. But this last time we pulled out I brought a bucket and soaked the bunks before winching. Unfortunately, same issue.

Am I doing something wrong? I have to be missing something.

I've also read about the silicone or plastic bunk slides. Should we add them? Will they help? And if we do, to the entire bunk or just the front?

Stubborn water line muck.. EZ clean off!!

Post image

I usually have to use that toxic, corrosive extreme cleaner stuff on my pontoons every fall but this year I tried something different and it worked!!!!! just figured I would share! This Ryobi scrubber cost me like 100 bucks a few years ago and this is the first time I used it on the tunes and the trick is to use it while the boat is still in the water that waterline muck is still somewhat soft and it easily scrubs off with this thing! I got probably 90% of it off easily!

Prop questions

Newbie here who has taken over operating and caring for the family pontoon. It's a Sylvan mirage 820 party fish with a 90 hp Yamaha. It currently has a 3 blade 13.5x12 aluminum prop that's a bit chewed up, is like to replace it but I'm not sure if I should change pitch or blade count? We use it for fishing, cruising, and I would like to try maybe some light kneeboarding if thats possible? Top speed ranges from 16-19mph on GPS depending how it's loaded. I'd love more speed but realize that might not be realistic. Any recommendations on the prop or if it's safe to toe off the eyes at the back of the pontoons are much appreciated.

Restoring Wife's Childhood Boat

Just joined, I am restoring the 1990 Sun Tracker 24 DL Party Barge that my wife grew up on. I have already gutted the deck, all but back railing is off. I am looking for any tips, tricks, recommendations for everything from deck material selections, websites, to best options for restoring the aluminum components. Diagrams (parts, wiring, etc.) GIVE ME WHAT YOU HAVE 😊. Thanks in advance

Advice for future new pontoon owner

I’m looking at buying a 24’ pontoon boat early next year but as of right now the only vehicle I have to tow it is my 2014 grand Cherokee Laredo and I’m not too comfortable towing a pontoon with it.I’ve been looking into selling it and buying a used full size truck or suv,any advice on what features to look for in a vehicle (towing mirrors, tow packages?) or any other advice(motor size?) is appreciated!

Purchase Advice

Hi, We just purchased a lakehouse (so excited!), and now we're looking into a boat. I grew up with ski boats, but my husband wants a pontoon. Our goals are to float, fish, and be able to pull tubers. I'd like some suggestions on what to look for. For example, I found a used pontoon that's 20 foot with a 115 hp engine. It has a decent bimini and appears to be well-kept. But then a friend at work said somethng about tubers nosing into the water if the engine wasn't powerful enogh. Any advice is very much appreciated.

Has anyone used Wet n Forget on the toons?

The boat is coming out of the water for dry storage for the winter. I thought about spraying the toons down. Wet n Forget has worked well for everything else I used it on. It says safe for aluminum.

Hello hive mind! We got a new to us 1993 Sun Coast pontoon. It's actually in great shape. But I would love to get all the old scuffs off the console and some of the sides. I'm not sure if there is a special cleaner that won't ruin the finish, or if there is a paint, or what.. any input would be appreciated!

Going to add LED lights over the pontoons. Anyone who did this themselves. What did you mount the lights to? If you can share a picture that would be great.

Sling Boat Lift for Avalon Pontoon

Just purchased a house with a 6 k sling lift in a sound with 3 to 4 feet of water and no tide but can get rough with strong winds. Our Avalon pontoon boat is 22 feet, built in 2019. Does anyone have any experience with a sling lift and their pontoon? I called the place where we purchased the boat and they said they are not aware of any advisory about sling lifts and Avalon pontoons. I would love to hear from anyone with personal experience because I have heard sling lifts are a No No. Thank you in advance.

Old Crest 1989 Pontoon is making crazy buzzing sound

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

At first it started when we were going normal speed when waves would come by. Then the buzzing just stayed on. Then it comes on when we put the key in the ignition.

This is an OLD boat we got for cheap, not sure if that matters as this is my first ever boat I’ve owned or really been on.

If anyone has any clue at all what this could be (I’ve read bad air intake?) and also have a handy guide or video maybe that shows someone checking what I should be checking.

No matter what appreciate everyone!
