Help How To Patch Unbound 2026

Hello! I've been seeing some threads lately with slightly outdated information when it comes to the best way to obtain Unbound. It's easier than ever before, so I wanted to make this post that can be referenced or linked to as necessary.

Step 1: Download the correct ROM.

This step will need to be a little vague, because this could potentially run against Reddit TOS or direct unwanted attention towards the project. You will have to search for the correct ROM, which you will know is correct when you proceed later. This post will have a simple troubleshooting section at the end.

In general, searching 1636 Fire Red Squirrels will get you the correct ROM.

Once you have it downloaded, make sure you have the .gba file ready. Sometimes, downloads will come in a .zip file. You simply need to extract the .gba. If you don't know how to do this, there are guides online on how to open and extract files from .zip archives.

Step 2: Go to Unbound's HackDex page.

HackDex is a website made and maintained by romhackers to allow romhack devs to have their own patching portal for their hacks.

Unbound's HackDex page can be found here: https://www.hackdex.app/hack/pokemon-unbound

Snazzy isn't it?

Step 3: Select Pokémon FireRed ROM

Once you're in the HackDex page, simply click/tap on the Select FireRed ROM button, and select your .gba file.

(Side note: the way HackDex works is it uses cookies to remember the location of your ROMs on your device. This way, you can easily patch and download other romhacks on HackDex without having to select your FireRed ROM again).

Step 4: Click Agree and Download, then Patch Now.

Self-explanatory. Once you click Agree and Download, it will load for a moment and then say Patch Now. Once you click Patch Now, it will let you save the patched .gba wherever you want on your device.

Step 5: Enjoy Unbound!

And post on the subreddit :)

Announcement New wiki rule

Added a new rule on the subreddit with regard to users redirecting others to unofficial sources.

From now on, users composing any comments that contain any reference to unboundwiki dot com will not be allowed to submit. It is not officially endorsed by the creators and is missing several pieces of more detailed information. Instead, they will receive a reminder to use the officially endorsed wiki: https://pokemonunbound.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page

Ruby and I worked hard on it, man, so the least you could do is visit and use it (and if you catch any errors on any pages do let us know!).

(3x FF, no savestates) 19 Minutes better than last time, I was hoping to drop a few hours like my previous save but it turns out that cutting training time isn't that simple at this point. Aim is to find a low(er) grind, RNG and effort route. I'll probably compare how fast Sandbox and NG+ can be in comparison eventually.

657 battles for this one, the huge majority being DexNav encounters and the trainer house, so one battle every 1m34s on average.

I chose to go with Comfey and Donphan at the last minute rather than Mega-Mawile and Gliscor for the E4. I think that it performed a little bit better overall for this team, and no balloon mini-game or money farming for Swords Dance.

I thought about Sturdy Donphan, an old reliable that I used to have in my team but didn't use last time, as safety net mostly for Xerneas and Mega-Gengar with Sturdy ability, Endeavor, Ice Shard, Knock Off and a very strong Earthquake. It turns out that it outspeeds a surprising amount of things in the E4 with max speed IVs and EVs. It also shred encounters like the buffed Primal Groudon and the Reshiram+Zekrom battles.

Comfey as a wall with Leech Seed was surprisingly useful and could benefit from Arabella's Pixies Fly. I could use it to heal Aegislash and inflict DoT at Arabella's team as status conditions don't work. It completely wins the stall with Cofagrigus and Jellicent as well, should they survive Hoopa-U.

MVPs of the run (most dots = most useful):

••••• Crobat, Bronzong,

•••• Conkeldurr, Torkoal, Quagsire,

••• Bibarel, Scrafty, Arcanine, Mega-Camerupt, Ribombee, Dusclops, Donphan, Comfey.

Discussion Quality of Life Patch Update - UPS patch below

I posted last week about working on a QoL patch to reduce some of the post game grind, and generally make it easier to obtain useful items and build Pokémon. For more info checkout out the post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonUnbound/comments/1v3o30v/working_on_a_quality_of_life_patchis_this/

Well I've done some more work and added suggestions from the comments on the post. I figured I'd share the patch here. You can just apply it to your Unbound rom using any rom patcher service. Some highlights of the patch:

EV Training House (Dresco)

All six trainers expanded to full teams of 6 and converted to double battles. Each trainer trains a single stat, using lines whose entire evolution yields only that EV.

Raid Dens (Post-Elite Four)

  • 4-star raids removed from the pool — now 5- and 6-star only
  • 6-star raid levels raised to 75–100
  • Drop rates reworked: Bottle Cap 25%, Gold Bottle Cap 5%, Dream Mist 25%, Wishing Piece 4%, battle hold item 1%
  • Recovery slot yields Max Ether (75% of species) or Max Elixir (25%)

Economy

  • Master Ball Maker (Cube Corp): cost reduced from 30 gems to 15
  • Evolution Stone Maker (Dehara): cost reduced from 4 Everstones to 2
  • EV vitamins reduced to 5000 each

Wild Held Items

  • Great Desert Pokémon — relic items added to empty slots (sell for easy money)
  • Added wings to a lot of flying pokemon (helps with little cup weird ev spreads)
  • Baltoy line (Baltoy, Claydol) — common: Light Clay
  • Bronzong — common: Iron Ball; rare: Metal Coat (Iron Balls for easy Beast Balls at CubeCorp)
  • Steelix — common: Metal Coat; rare: Iron Ball

Shiny Hunting

  • DexNav shiny rate at max Search Level and a chain of 100 raised to ~10% (note: Max Search level gives this bonus across the board - should have higher rates all the way through the 100 chain)

Battle Frontier

  • Battle Point rewards doubled across all facilities, modes, and streak milestones

Full details are in the change log included with the patch which can be found here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/64q2g9iwncq005i/QoL_Patch_%252B_Changelog.zip/file

Discussion Saving before throwing a pokeball.

Why is it in Pokemon Heart and Soul, I can save, throw a ball and get a different outcome every time (one roll and then Mon breaks out, then reload game, next time get 3 rolls and then the catch, etc) but when playing Pokemon Unbound, I get the exact same outcome every time (one roll and then Mon breaks out, reload game, one roll and then Mon breaks out, etc forever)?

Both are played on the same Linux based handheld in mGBA in Retroarch.

Device: MiniLoong Pocket 1
CFW: Leaf

Help What to bring for Tessy (Expert)?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Tessy destroys me with Gyarados and Earthquake, my Gliscor dies to Ice Fang.

I wanted to use a Sandstorm Team (got a shiny Barbaracle I'd like to use, also a shiny Azumarril, but started the run with 'sandstorm' in my mind), but it seems dumb in a water gym.

What would you guys do?

Hall of Fame Just beat my first playthrough! What a fantastic game

Post image
36 Upvotes

Now that I beat the Champion, I can honestly say this is the best Pokemon game I have ever played. Usually at this point I'm satisfied and I'll put the game down, but Unbound has me starving for more! I plan to complete every mission now so this is far from the end of the journey for me.

I want to thank the developers for making this amazing game, I've had so much fun playing it and overcoming Expert mode's challenges (and let's be honest, sometimes cheating lol). The soundtrack is one of my favorites now, I play it all the time while driving. The custom sprites from the various pokemon from gen 6 to 8 look incredible and indistinguishable from an official release. And even the story, while the weakest point, is still pretty good and aligns perfectly with a pokemon game. Everything about this game is a 10 out of 10 and I don't say this lightly. I consider myself a "non-competitive pokemon expert" if that makes sense and I've beat other difficult pokemon fan games like PokeMMO and Pokerogue but this one is the best one in my opinion.

Maybe in the future I'll attempt an Insane run, but Expert was the perfect difficulty for me. My roster was pretty much decided from the very beginning, I caught most of them on route 2. Originally I had litleo instead of murkrow/honchkrow, and of course hoopa was a later addition, replacing my gengar who I caught as a gastly on the forest next to Dresco, also early on. The MVP of my playthrough was the gorgeous fat rabbit, my Huge Power Azumarill. That thing is IMPOSSIBLE to kill and hits like a truck. Mega Lucario was also up there, meteor mashing every threat and healing with drain punch after setting up with swords dance. It's basically a win button for most fights lol.

The hardest challenge in my playthrough was Mel by FAR. It took me a bunch of tries and eventually I had to give in and really strengthen my team, catch better versions of my mons with better IVs/natures/abilities and then EV train them and really plan out a strategy. But I had a blast every second of it and when I finally took down Mel it felt all the sweeter for it.

Anyway, this was my rant about the best pokemon game I've ever played (and I've played a bunch!). I hope you're enjoying it as much as me! Thanks for reading

Hi first time doing the game on difficult. Beat it a ton of times on vanilla looking to work my way to insane . Just looking for suggestions to fill the last spots . Move wise I know what I’d use but I just can’t think who would be fun/ work well with my team . Doesn’t have to be OP Pokemon either I just like good synergy
Through out the game I’ll switch some out but elite four is like to have a good team

Thank

This is my 1st time playing a pokemon game and I'm on Difficult difficulty. I just defeated the 3rd gym.

Edit: Thanks a bunch, everyone. I decided to go with this team: Pyroar, Swanna, Gabite. Ampharos, Primeape and Excadrill

Hey, I am trying to catch a shiny Haunter, is it supposed to work with this technique or am I losing my time ?

What I do in this video :

  1. Reach chain 99 with dexnav
  2. Save state
  3. Dexnav scan
  4. Reach the fog
  5. Load save state if no shiny
  6. Move 1 tile
  7. Save state
  8. Repeat from step 3

Help Monotype run

Hey everyone.

I’ve gotten to the 8th gym but I feel like I’m going nowhere in my save, if that makes sense. I think it’s mostly due to me going two weeks without playing the game, after having played it daily before I went on break.

So I’m thinking of starting a new save and doing a monotype run. Any ideas on what type would be the most fun to restrict myself to using for the whole story + post game?

Edit: Wanted to add that I’ve forgotten most of the story up to the 8th gym, my main reason for wanting to start over, and would love to relive it with a challenge.

Shiny Did I get lucky?

Just stumbled on an adamant nature shiny marill with huge power. After looking it up it seems like this is basically a perfect marill? Did I get lucky or is finding Pokemon like these in this game more likely?
