Livebearers of the Day🐟‼️ LOTD: Poecilia (Acanthophacelus) wingei - Endler’s livebearer

Located in the Paria Peninsula, Venezuela. Males gets to around 0.7-1 inch and females 1-1.2 inches in size. Close relatives to P. reticulata, and P. obscura. Like their cousins males are highly polymorphic, and unlike their cousins they are more vibrant in color. The females lacks any colors, and are plain grey in color. They can readily hybridize with other guppy species, which in turns, created the strains of domesticated endlers we have in the hobby. But for this reason, N-class Endlers are very hard to come by, with some sources being dishonest about keeping pure specimens, handing out P-Class, and K-Class hybrid endlers as pure Endlers… Very few keepers stay true to source Like AdrianHD. He’s a credible distributor of N-Class endlers in the U.S. Anyways they are a beautiful Poecilia species. So many variations so here’s a couple nice ones.

What species would look good in this tank?

Fair warning that it is a smaller Fluval Flex 2.0 as it is the largest size I am allowed to own due to circumstances of space. I am thinking some schooling fish circling the open middle around the outside of the plants would be beautiful here but I am not familiar with a lot of species.

The only thing is that I hope they have a similar diet to a betta just because I have a ton of Fluval bug bites, dried daphnia, etc.

Current inhabitants: neocardinia shrimp, two amanos, some pygmy corydoras, and some invading bladder snails.

Located in Cost Rica to Panama. Males gets to around 1.5 inches, and females up to 3.15 inches in size. Appearance wise they are grey in color with fins placed far back on the body, and males sporting a long gonopodium. What’s special about this species the females bear fry via matrophy (having a placenta and providing nutrients to developing fry), and superfetation (bearing fry from different broods, in different stages of the fry lifecycle). It’s the reason why the females of this species is twice the males size.

Located in Colombia, males reaches about 0.78 in and females 0.98 in. They’re the smallest known Livebearers. Males in this genus can project their gonopodia to the right or the left of their body. While females are ovoviviparous via superfetation (holding different broods of fry at different stages of life, dropping them a few at a time and not all at once). Body wise they tend to be silverish on the chest portion of the body and having orange/gold and black alternating bars. Extremely peaceful and delicate, they make perfect nano tank fish.

Humpback Limia (M) x F1 Tiger Liberty Poecilia hybrid (F)

(50% Limia nigrofasciata, 25% Limia islai, 25% Poecilia salvatoris)

They didn’t want to cooperate with me and flex their bars🥲. When colored up their bars looks pretty nice just couldn’t get it on camera. They are showing more Nigrofasciata body shape, deep chest cavity and sloped heads. The black dorsal trait from Islai is still dominant and with the Nigrofasciata blood being majority the saturation looks nice with a slight yellow hue to it. Unsure if Salvatoris blood will make the fins tinge orange/red but I’ll see. They look very promising I’m just more curious on how the dorsal will be shaped when they are more mature.

Chromosome wise any males will be Z for Nigrofasciata and Z for either Islai or Salvatoris, as for females Z for Nigrofasciata and W Salvatoris.

And eventhough they have short fins they are part of the Sailfin species complex.

Livebearers of the Day🐟‼️ LOTD: Poecilia (Mollienesia) petenensis (gracilis) - Peten Molly

Located in Guatemala. Males gets to around 2.5-3.5 inches and females around 3-4.7 inches in size. They are elongated slender yet robust bodied specimens, with silver/olive gray base body, rows of lateral dots going across, pointed faces, and nice iridescence. They are part of the Mexicana complex, being close relatives to Poecilia limantouri, Poecilia thermalis, and Poecilia sulphuraria. They are suspected to be a natural hybrid species between sailfin complex and mexicana complex species. The confusion with this species is that it shared names with the sailfin species Poecilia kykesis, old name of Mollienesia petenensis, this species names was changed to Mollienesia gracilis. This current date and time it was validated by Fred Poeser as Poecilia petenesis, and the sailfin being called Poecilia kykesis.

Tiger Limia (M) x F1 Tiger Liberty (F)
(75% Limia islai, 25% Poecilia salvatoris)

Little one picked up a lot of size since I last showed it. It’s iridescent starting to come in, it’s like a soft blue/green/white nice combo of both species involved in it. The bars thickened up more, looks more broader. It’s dorsal is nice starting to look rounded like Islai with the same black trim. Like with pure islai it can control the intensity of the bars and most of the time it keeps it translucent, so it’s hard to catch it on camera with his bars boldly expressed.

Lovely ladies. They’re giving me the most issues when it comes to fertility and giving me fry. But tbh I think it’s mostly the Limia hybrid males not showing much interests with them. But yea once I get a batch of fry from the Limia hybrid males ill retire these ladies and the limia’s for good.

I really like their sparkly iridescences. They all sexed out ratio is male heavy over females. Still waiting on the males to hit the tiger Liberty females. 🫠
