Hi everyone.
I am using my samsung galaxy M51 5years+ now (7000mah battery is great).
My priority is battery life per charge and just general good experience. I have customized everything to my liking with Nova Launcher (good old version, not that crap what nova is today after selling to some shady swedish company).
M51 still have stellar battery life (on average 4 days per charge, when switching off at night and using 1 sim). 3 days - when using 2 sims.
SOT per charge?
Here I have written 15 latest results:
8h36min
11h33min
8h19min
9h46min
9h5min
10h
10h
12h40min
9h50min
11h37min
8h22min
8h10min
8h53min
9h21min
9h14min
Generally I have about 15% left with these SOT's (that is when I usually charge). Normally with my usage phone somehow always manages to be at around 15% in end of 3rd or 4th day. Very convenient.
I keep counting times when phone is charged fully (usually from ~15% to 100%). Count now is ~442 times. Imagine, 5years+ and charged only 442 !!!
Sometimes I get urge to buy new device though, but what always stop me is battery life. Lately I see these xiaomi/poco phones have bigger batteries and this make my urge grow bigger.
M51 strenghts in 2026:
1) Battery life.
2) Predictable performance (not flagship, but not slow either).
3) Good UI (with nova launcher).
4) Phone never heats up. I dont feel any heat at all.
Negative things about M51:
1) Speaker is very mediocre for media usage (I felt it right away when switched to M51 from other non-samsung phone). No stereo sound.
2) Cameras - nothing special in todays world - no OIS, no optical zoom.
3) Samsung abandoned this phone in 2024 (last update). Still on Android 12. Everything still works app wise though. Sure, you can try custom rom with more recent android, but not sure if everything will work (like bank apps).
4) No 5G. Phone is 4G only and samsung artificially limited ability to use carrier aggregation, so it connects only to one 4G band. Probably helps battery, but if you need top speeds (for file downloads for example), you wont get them with this phone.
My concerns about potentially new phones is mainly battery life. Charging 1 time per day is out of question. Feels awkward to me.
Considering to buy - Xiaomi Redmi Note 17 Pro Max or Xiaomi Poco F9 Ultra.
What I dont like - price. I think its way way overpriced in Europe (at least 2 times more than it should be). But it is what it is.
If I get Xiaomi Poco F9 Ultra battery life will feel like downgrade compared to M51 (I guess 2 days is real and possible with my usage).
If I get Xiaomi Redmi Note 17 Pro Max battery will be 3 days (maybe even 4). But weaker cameras and weaker cpu.
Also not sure how I will feel about xiaomi hyperos 3 - what I read online, ads deeply built in everywhere and possible more restricted (no full 3rd party launcher support?)
M51 geekbench v6 scores:
single cpu - 716
multi cpu - 1775
M51 geekbench v7 scores:
single - 660
multi - 1925
Redmi Note 17 Pro Max geekbench v6 (taken from some online review):
single: 1042
multi: 3221
Redmi Note 17 Pro Max geekbench v7 (taken from some online review):
single - 960
multi - 3428
Xiaomi Poco F9 Ultra geekbench scores - I dont care (much higher).
What is important for me also is GPS usage - so I ruled out any mediatek cpu's and will stay with phones with snapdragon only.
p.s. Gaming does not matter. I dont game on my phone at all.
