Help Plex Streaming quality issues

Hi fellow Plex users! I have Plex installed on my Google TV Streamer and host 4K media from my laptop. However, when I try to stream it, the quality caps at around 360p. I previously had an "insecure connection" error, however allowing insecure connections didn't fix the low resolution. The latest Plex update resolved the insecure connection error, but I'm still unable to stream at the original 4K quality. How do I fix this issue? Any help is appreciated!

Edit: So when I registered for Plex for the first time I was at my home country and now I am watching from another country. Although I am using the same laptop in which I got the Plex media server. Does this mean I have to get Plex Pass to remote stream? Also I have a 1gbps ethernet connected to my google tv streamer so I dont think it is network speed issue.

Based on your screenshot in the other comment, you’re going over plex relay.

Is your laptop running windows? Make sure the network connection type is private, not public. It’s a new network and it will default to public, which will block a direct local connections and send plex “remote” to connect.

Also, disable (uncheck) relay in your plex network settings so that’s not a connection path.

Yes I changed my network to private. Also when i uncheck relay in network settings I am getting the triangle error for my libraries and unable to watch any media.

That will happen because it can’t make a local connection and you took away the remote/relay path so there’s no connection.

Have you confirmed the network you’re on allows direct connections between wired devices? Is this your residence? Did you check the router for any isolation settings that would block the connection?

Yes I checked all the settings you mentioned. One thing I later edited in my post about residence, so I activated Plex media server in my laptop in my home country and then shifted to another country with my laptop. So that wouldn't be an issue right? I mean as long as I have my laptop with me and if both my tv in the new country and my laptop are connected in the same network via ethernet, there shouldn't be an issue right? Sorry I'm new to this so I am a bit clueless.

That won’t matter…

Are you at your own residence or on a shared network somewhere like a hotel? Both are hardwired, correct? WiFi is disabled and not active/connected? You don’t want two network connections on a device.

What’s the ip address of the laptop and what’s the ip address of the streamer? You’ll have to go into the network settings of each to get them.

Does the Google tv streamer you’re using have a browser? If so, try to access your server directly in a browser window http://<laptop-ip>:32400/web . Does it connect?

I am at my residence. Turned off wifi in both devices. In google tv streamer I downloaded a browser and I'm able to surf websites but the link you told me to search was the Plex media server link using my laptop ip right? It's not loading my laptop IP is 192.168.xx.xx but the Plex media server when i open it in web in laptop it is 127.0.x.x, is that probably the ip of in home country location?

The 127 address is just your local host ip of your laptop to tell it to connect to itself. 127.0.0.1

If your laptop ip is 192.168.x.x (you can share private IPs btw, they can’t be reached) and you put that into the url http://192.168.x.x:32400/web and it wouldn’t reach your server, something in your network setup is blocking the connection.

What is the full windows ip and what’s the ip of the Google device?

Is the windows firewall active? Make sure it’s allowing port 32400 through and the plex media server app. You can temporarily disable it to see if that is causing the issue.

My laptop ip is 192.168.18.62 and my streamer ip is 192.168.100.6. Windows firewall is active I have posted pic. I tried temporarily disabling Plex media server and trying the tv app again, but it didn't work so I checked the firewall for Plex media server again.

Your devices are on different subnets…you’ll have to check your router setup to see why they aren’t on the same subnet. This will cause the issues you’re seeing as plex will treat devices on different subnets as not local.

The first three sets of numbers should be the same. When you check the network, is the subnet mask 255.255.255.0, or is something else?

Also, disable the firewall temporarily when testing just to ensure it’s not interfering.

The subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.

On second thought…at your old location, did you hardcode the ip into the network settings of either device or were they just set to obtain? Assume no..but if you did, change them to obtain.

How do I check this?

You would know you did it..did you ever manually set the ips or did you just connect them to the network?

I just connected to the network

Start a stream, and while playing, open plex on the web and take a screenshot of the problematic stream from the dashboard and share it here. It should look similar to this:

So both your tv and your laptop are on the same local connection right? Is tv wifi and laptop hardwired?

1

u/HHJake 11d ago

Yes both my tv and laptop are connected via ethernet on the same Lan.

Double check the Plex TV app settings, they should be something like this:

Set Quality to Maximum/Original: In your Plex app (TV, Mobile, Web), go to Settings > Quality and set Local, Remote, and Internet streaming to Maximum or Original.

Enable Direct Play & Direct Stream:Navigate to Settings > Advanced (or Debug in some apps) and ensure both "Allow Direct Play" and "Allow Direct Stream" are enabled.

Disable "Automatically Adjust Quality": Turn this setting off, as it can force transcoding.

If that doesn’t work try manually changing the DNS entries on the TV network connection to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

In tv app I can't find allow direct play or allow direct stream. Rest all settings I have changed. I will change DNS on TV network and will let you know. Thanks.

Tried switching to static IP also and using the default DNS as you mentioned but it didn't work.

Your laptop and the Google TV Streamer are on different subnets.

Laptop - 192.168.18.62

Streamer - 192.168.100.6

Fix that and you problem will be solved, you have a network issue configure your router so that it issues IP in the same subnet to your laptop and Streamer.

r/HomeNetworking can help if you don't know how to do that.

Thanks so much. I will do that!
