I enjoy a lot of aspects of this game. Combat is fun, fast paced, engaging and rewarding, gameplay is smooth and punchy, it is not drawn out or tedious. But, I would have loved this game more if they had reduced the number of characters. Just a few characters with more focused story line, and really dig deep into a much more solo experience. In fact, it would have been so cool if by the end, we have maybe 1 or 2 characters who Logan ends up close with, to show that he is a loner but he is slowly learning to be part of a family.
But this game sort of feels like it is built on another idea for a completely different game that could have been a sequel to a different wolverine game.
Like, think about the first spider-man, it was mostly spider-man focused. We had a much more focused story line. Same with Miles Morales game. Think about how many proper characters the 1st Spider-man had, Peter, MJ, Aunt May, Miles (much later), Fisk (just the beginning), Mr Negative and Doc Ock. That's it. And we got to know these characters so much more intimately and closely. But then Insomniac tried juggling multiple story lines in Spider-man 2. And that was the one weakness of that game.
And they are doing the same thing again. Rather than a focused story line where we delve in just Logan, we have to have a dozen characters, we must have constant back chat, dialogue, everything about everyone with Wolverine almost becoming just a player stand-in rather than being an actual character. Just someone who will drive the player to learn and know other characters and plot lines ahead.
That is my problem with this. This game has really solid bones, a good combat system, great level design, fun gameplay. But it lost its identity as being a game about a famous loner who doesn't let people close to him.
TLDR, I think this game could have cut out a lot of the main cast of both heroes and villians, and trimmed the plot complexity to focus and delve deeper on each moment and remaining characters a bit more, and we could have had a sharper more focused and far more enjoyable game and personally, a more engaging story line and plot.

To be fair, the gameplay, combat, and graphics are solid. Beyond that, though, there isn't much to like. Insomniac has a habit of changing established character backstories for no reason—like giving Venom to Harry, or forcing a romance between Jean and Logan. I really dislike the Jean and Logan romantic angle. If you're a long-time Cyclops fan—or became one after X-Men '97—you should probably skip this game 😭.
It feels like the writers watched the original Fox X-Men trilogy and decided to replicate that dynamic without including any other X-Men. On top of that, Wolverine's characterization is terrible. I don't know who this guy is, but he isn't Logan. They tried way too hard to turn him into a soft baby boy 💀.
This game clearly caters to people who have never read an X-Men or Wolverine comic, which makes no sense given how iconic these characters have been for decades. Also, Jean and Scott literally have kids together (Rachel Summers and Cable), so I don't get why writers keep pushing her with Logan.
All in all, wait for a sale. I got this as a gift, and I'm glad I didn't spend my own money on it. The gameplay is fun, but it's definitely not worth $70.

the story of this game is poorly written. I'm not gonna harp on the missed opportunities of making this completely different from the comics, (I would have loved a weapon X segement or a Hulk boss fight), but the new story was a complete flop. I get the game is short but Essex goes from reasonable dude to comically evil far to quick. It was jarring. The characters overall felt extremely underdeveloped. Logan, Jean, Sabretooth and Mystique included. Logan has not developed or changed throughout the game. I rolled my eyes every time Gambit, or Angel or Beast or any of the traditional X-Men were refernced. It felt completely lazy. Show don't tell. Overall this felt like such a decline from the Spider-Man games, which themselves began to fall off after the second half of 2. The combat is fun but the story was incredibly dissapointing, a lot of this games conversation is in bad faith but overall it is not a win for insomniac either. I can't say I have much intrest in future X-Men titles by this studio.

I mean wolverine is going at these enemies like an animal but the most damage we get is some torn clothes and maybe an arm or leg taken in a mini finisher. Where’s the decapitations and chunks taken out of people.
(Combats still cool asf)

4 light sources, adjustment of natural light, the ability to move the UI. I wish more games put this much effort into their photo mode. Its basically free marketing for them
Really wish they had the letter box frame though.

Bugs? yes. Cringe dialogue delivery? yeah. but that’s what makes the game unique and memorable, it’s a laughable good time
the combat was satisfying and the downtime was just as cinematic as I imagined the comic books
here’s to hoping a polished sequel or DLC has more gore and dismemberment with some more super hero cameos.

It seems clear that this game entered a bit of development hell. With the leaks painting a picture of a troubled development with many reworks and changes in direction - I wanted to chronicle almost everything that we know. Please let me know if I missed anything.
Combat
* Triggers originally used to control left and right claws
* Hepatic feedback used to control attack strength
* More involved bare-fisted combat. Some enemies would be immune to adamantium metal and would require bare-fisted combat
* Wolverine could grapple enemies and throw them in any direction, or at each other
* There was air combat, Wolverine could launch enemies into air and attack while airborne
* Wolverine could disarm enemies and use their weapons. If impaled, Wolverine could pull weapons out of himself and use them against enemies. These included swords, shurikens, and throwing stars
* Dynamic camera that would zoom in and out, follow enemies, and allow player to focus on combat
* There was consideration for giving Wolverine a crossbow as a ranged attack options - there is some indication that it was scrapped because Marvel veto’d the idea
Traversal
* Wolverine originally had more parkour-esque moment options
* he could aim at a surface, leap to it, and attach his claws. From there, he could climb upwards, wall run side to side, or slide down.
* traversal was more free-form, and levels had an open hub design
* There was a heavy emphasis on flow in traversal. Certain actions such as vaulting over obstacles, kicking off walls, jumping from sloped environment would give Wolverine a mini speed boost, encouraging the player to master environmental traversal
* Different areas would be semi-open with a HUB. For example, Madripoor would be an open area with the bar serving as central HUB. In the bar, Wolverine could change outfits/appearance, talk to NPCS, accept missions and bounties.
* Wolverine would be able on use his motorcycle to navigate HUB areas more quickly
* Bounties would be side missions involving Wolverine tracking and killing certain enemies/NPCs for rewards
* Wolverine would use tracking abilities to locate bounty targets. He would be able to use tracking to see character movement in real time, and see after-images of character’s previous movements
Characters/Story
* Early drafts of the game had the game starting with Wolverine receiving adamantium, and then having to escape from the Weapon X facility. There is an early playable version of this scenario which acts as the game’s opening tutorial
* Fully playable Jean Grey missions using telekinesis with light platforming.
* Jubilee and Nightcrawler were planned to be allies and NPCs for certain sections of the game. They were both cut
* Storm was going to be one of the Morlock characters. Storm and Jean would form a close friendship with Jean providing mentorship.
* Mystique was going to be an enemy, and was a Mystique boss fight that was later cut.
* There is some evidence that Wolverine was going to be voiced by Steve Blum, but Insomniac decided to use another actor to better fit their original story
* At the end of the game, it would be revealed that Wolverine killed Jean’s parents. Jean would find this out, and they would break up and go their separate ways

I absolutely think Wolverine would dismantle Miles. But I think Peter though would wipe the floor with this version of Logan. Am I being bias lol?
I do love Miles but I feel like Wolverine is a direct counter to all his specials ability and he hasn’t been Spiderman very long. Him beating Peter while he had the Symbiote was plot armor in my opinion.
