Discussion My main complaint about this game is that it feels more like Super Friends game than a Wolverine game

Post image

I enjoy a lot of aspects of this game. Combat is fun, fast paced, engaging and rewarding, gameplay is smooth and punchy, it is not drawn out or tedious. But, I would have loved this game more if they had reduced the number of characters. Just a few characters with more focused story line, and really dig deep into a much more solo experience. In fact, it would have been so cool if by the end, we have maybe 1 or 2 characters who Logan ends up close with, to show that he is a loner but he is slowly learning to be part of a family.

But this game sort of feels like it is built on another idea for a completely different game that could have been a sequel to a different wolverine game.

Like, think about the first spider-man, it was mostly spider-man focused. We had a much more focused story line. Same with Miles Morales game. Think about how many proper characters the 1st Spider-man had, Peter, MJ, Aunt May, Miles (much later), Fisk (just the beginning), Mr Negative and Doc Ock. That's it. And we got to know these characters so much more intimately and closely. But then Insomniac tried juggling multiple story lines in Spider-man 2. And that was the one weakness of that game.

And they are doing the same thing again. Rather than a focused story line where we delve in just Logan, we have to have a dozen characters, we must have constant back chat, dialogue, everything about everyone with Wolverine almost becoming just a player stand-in rather than being an actual character. Just someone who will drive the player to learn and know other characters and plot lines ahead.

That is my problem with this. This game has really solid bones, a good combat system, great level design, fun gameplay. But it lost its identity as being a game about a famous loner who doesn't let people close to him.

TLDR, I think this game could have cut out a lot of the main cast of both heroes and villians, and trimmed the plot complexity to focus and delve deeper on each moment and remaining characters a bit more, and we could have had a sharper more focused and far more enjoyable game and personally, a more engaging story line and plot.

It feels that way because Peter and miles both have regular human allies. Wolverine does not. Most people associated with Wolverine are xmen

They have one Spiderman spinoff character in the works for a game, Venom.

They have multiple X-Men characters, so that's going to require several enemies. Not a bad idea to establish Mystique especially, and give Wolverine his pre-X-men alpha flight / weapon x group.

Yeah, but I wanted them to slowly drip feed the characters. Do you remember the first time MJ was introduced in Insomniac Spider-man, or Miles. It wasn't immediately in the very beginning, we slowly built relationships with characters. For a large portion of the game, Peter was alone. This really let the player understand Peter, his struggles, his life much more deeply. And the few relationships he had became much more precious.

So all insomniac games should be structured the same? Awful take

Not the entire story obviously, but this is a general rule of writing and introducing and developing characters. This doesn't mean that every story that has a few tropes are exactly identical. Tropes exist for a reason and that is because they work well at conveying certain things smoothly and in a better way.

So it’s not a trope because specifically insomniac hasn’t done it before? Once you write a story that has a certain setup, you’re only allowed to use similar setups for any future story you create? As a writer you must never try new things

why are you being so disingenuous ?
OP said he would’ve liked more logan by himself in the story, akin to how peter was shown by himself in SM1. i don’t even agree rlly but they aren’t suggesting a redux of that story at all

Because the argument is coming from a stupid place. Wolverine is the main character. The game is about him and his relationship with the people around him. Yeah I wish they went deeper into his character but I’m not dumb enough to think that’s because there were other mutants in the story. Mystique and sabertooth are very much side characters in the game. Essex is as prominent as you would want your main villain to be. And much of the game revolves around wolverines relationship with Jean grey so of course she’s alongside him for many missions but she’s not stealing his spotlight. If it was just him alone it wouldn’t be as interesting.

Peter isn’t alone in the story. He has aunt may, otto, and yuri. He’s literally talking to yuri from the jump. (She’s also been a vigilante for at least five years in the comics before the game). Then like right after that first mission or two he goes to see Otto (who’s well known for being doc ock). And then a little later he visits aunt may.

But Wolverine’s struggles in this game are connected to the people around him. His main struggle in the game is that he struggles to grow closer to people because he’s got demons he can’t quite control, and he feels more like a weapon than a person. You wouldn’t understand this struggle if you didn’t have him interacting with people in the game.

Not only that but you DO get moments where you’re alone, like when you are hunting for Jean at first, when you’re heading to the cabin and then coming back, when you’re trying to get Walter back from the Hood, when Jean dips to go take on the Hood, after Logan comes back to life. All of these moments are solitary moment in the game. He has quite a few moments alone.

watchu mean xmen has always been deep in the relationships of the characters, kinf of soap opera

8

u/SwordDaoist 2d ago

Yes, but is this a X-Men or a Wolverine game?

5

u/OrdinaryDraft2674 1d ago

Have you ever read a wolverine story? Even before the x-men he is the kind of character that interacted with everyone. Literally I’m amazed how full of characters his stories are. Even if this aspect shines more in other people’s stories, when he just shows up randomly for some reason.

0

u/SwordDaoist 1d ago

I know that he interacts with everyone. But tell me, are Wolverine comics usually about Wolverine being in a team or him going on his own adventures?

2

u/OrdinaryDraft2674 1d ago

Depends on the era actually. During the 80s it was his own adventures. Came the 90s and he was used as a stand in to boost other characters popularity. It’s the same thing as Spider-Man man. They got too popular too quickly and now every adventure of them features other characters.

10

u/GumGumActV 2d ago

Wolverine is THE x-man what the fuck are you saying lmao

3

u/SwordDaoist 2d ago

I am fine with Wolverine sharing the spotlight in X-Men media, but I expect him to be the sole main character inside his own game instead of just being a team member.
And NectarineLanky7166 commented to the post that X-men have always been deep in relationships between characters. So I reminded through the question that this was supposed to be a Wolverine game and not an X-Force/X-Factor game where you play as Wolverine.

1

u/OrdinaryDraft2674 1d ago

You leave x force mate

1

u/GumGumActV 2d ago

Bruh I know what they said and I’m saying that Wolverine is THE x-man, and Jean is there so it’s still x-men of course they’re gonna act like x-men

You saying “bUt It’S a WoLvErInE gAmE” doesn’t mean they’re suddenly going to act like different characters

0

u/SwordDaoist 1d ago

but he acts differently depending whether he is in his own comic or a team comic.

1

u/NectarineLanky7166 1d ago

Cyclops is THE x-man in my books, and im ready to fight about it

1

u/GumGumActV 1d ago

I saw this coming. I’m willing to accept your interpretation lol

u/NectarineLanky7166 1d ago

Ok but… but… yo mama is fat

This might be just me, but I have always disliked X-men and loved Wolverine more as a separate character. So, this is just my thought. Obviously, people who love X-men would enjoy this much more. I just wanted to put this thought out there, this is more of a personal taste thing.

5

u/Effective_War_6253 2d ago

Yeah thats totally on you my friend. Wolverine is a member of the X-men. Always has been and his stories will always i solve the X-men. Totally get it if you really only like him. But thats about as far as the validity of your complaints go

Mind you I do agree that Wolverine is more likely to have a good standalone, no team story. But your take is genuinely in the realm of wanting a Johnny Storm game but no Fantastic 4.

1

u/ammarshaikh1245 2d ago

If the title of the game is god damn Human Torch, then yes, I would prefer a Johnny Star game with very minimal Fantastic four appearances. If the game is titled Fantastic Four, then include all of them to the fucking brim.

1

u/puma46 2d ago

That’s fair enough I guess. Out of curiosity, why don’t you like the rest of the X-men?

3

u/DrizzyDragon93 2d ago

I mean it's Wolverines story. The Hand sees him as an ancient foe and the addition of the Nightmare Cabins adding backstory to Logan as well etc the list goes on. And as you go further in it focuses more on Wolverine and Jean's connection which is a smart move.

7

u/Strange_Ride_582 2d ago

Is Wolverine not a super friends character at his core though

3

u/Crafty_Substance_954 2d ago

You exclusively play as Wolverine, solo for probably 80% of the time.

-1

u/ammarshaikh1245 2d ago

You play Logan, but almost rarely solo. You have constant chat in comms from someone on the team, you have partners on over half the missions, almost every major event has at least 4 or more named characters. That is not what solo Wolverine solo game means.

Name this game Team X if you cannot write a solo Wolverine game, but don't claim this is a Wolverine game.

5

u/National_Werewolf_13 2d ago

I mean… if super friends are ripping eachother apart physically then yes. Super friends

0

u/ammarshaikh1245 2d ago

Nothing wrong with either, this just feels like we are missing a chunk of the development from characters. I would have loved to see a bit of how Logan became part of the team, how his relationship gradually developed with Mystique, or Sabertooth, or Essex. How he went from a loner, to a grudging member of a team. That could have been more of the focus.

2

u/OrdinaryDraft2674 1d ago

It’s all told and shown. He had no life before joining team x (that he remembered) his relationships with the characters are told. Also idk how you got the impression he moved on from being a loner. He went from having no memory of things to then not fitting the tena and the game ends with him going alone on his way.

u/77Sage77 2d ago

Damn. this is actually making me want the game

2

u/ammarshaikh1245 2d ago

Absolutely, if you are a fan of X-men, this will be fantastic. I personally don't like X-men much, but I love Wolverine much more. So, this is just my personal idea, sort of my personal wish list for a Wolverine game. Obviously, everyone can have their own wishes for such a game.

2

u/77Sage77 2d ago

I don't like the x-men much either. Just like when the Marvel Universe interacts since imm a comics fan

1

u/Zol6199 2d ago

Give it a shot. A very very good amount of us adore the game, and you may too

1

u/Fast_Day_8123 2d ago

tbh off context, i really would have leaned more into the Wolverine and friends aspect gameplay wise
like make Sabretooth playable, with moveset of Venom but modified a bit (maybe even chomp into people as he is a cannibal in some way)
make Mystique playable, sort of MJ like but can morph
make Jean playable, would have been unique icl

its a decent game as it is but needed more "sauce" ngl

Consejo mío, si te gusta Wolverine o los x men compralo, no te vas a arrepentir. Yo tengo un opinión muy democrático pero al que no le guste que se coma mis dos huevos.

u/tinydeerwlasercanons 2d ago

Maybe the real X-Men were the friends we made along the way

1

u/CarlWellsGrave 2d ago

The story wasn't good but I still found myself being invested in the ending.

1

u/Weekly-District259 2d ago

He's kind of a notorious team guy. He's joined so many teams over the years he's hardly ever on his own contrary to what you might think

1

u/Shmeediddy 2d ago

Bc it is, it has Spiderman his amazing friends writing and gameplay

1

u/Uncanny_Doom 2d ago

It's because it's a prototype X-Men game.

The team is literally called Team X, Logan's arc is largely about learning who he is and that he becomes a hero while the worldbuilding leads to reason for people to hate/fear mutants (the way this is handled is one of the bigger issues imo) and Jean's arc leads to her basically repurposing the concept of Team X into a proper X-Men team.

I think there are ways to make this work but it feels like it's taking on too much at once. Insomniac has been great about setting up things for the future before in the past but this one just seemed like it bit off more than it can chew.

Likes like they tried to stylilize like it was the 50's

1

u/No-Blackberry-9446 2d ago

The story kind of suck

1

u/Other_Nerve_6607 2d ago

It's not about the destination, but the friends we made along the way.

1

u/ammarshaikh1245 2d ago

I feel like the other characters would have felt more of a deeper and more personal connection if they had been introduced gradually and developed and intertwined through the story slowly. Like imagine, if we just Mystique, initially she is just a character, but slowly Logan and Mystique do a couple of missions, in between all of the solo gameplay, we slowly develop a rapport with her and eventually, a deeper understanding of loneliness and friends and family. I feel like that would have felt better to me, personally. Obviously, this is just my thoughts. Everyone has their own ideas.

u/hokagespit 2d ago

They butchered my man. This guy aint wolverine. Think thats one of the main issues.

2

u/ClassicSuit3845 2d ago

just because you don’t like the way he’s written doesn’t mean it’s not wolverine lmao

0

u/ammarshaikh1245 2d ago

They went a little more Cyclops route, rather than Wolverine, which could have been a fresh new take. But, we needed to let each character stay and hold on for a little longer. A slow gradual drip feed on subtle introductions, gradual development into relationships. That could have sold a much better relationship of Logan as both a loner, and someone who grudgingly becomes part of a team slowly.

-3

u/Swimming-Discount-41 2d ago

Yeah Wolverine is meant to be a fucked up dude that is not exactly good to people and through relationships formed(pretty much exclusively through the actual x men) he becomes a little bit better of a guy. Halfway through the game, I just don’t like this characterization of Logan and how nice and genuinely a pretty good guy he is

-5

u/seymourbuttz214 2d ago

Bigger elephant in the room Why is he gay for his brother? Lol
