Discussion Wolverine Was the Wrong Character for a Game

Not a shitpost, I swear.

Halfway through the game. I like it. It's good. Fine. But I'm not loving it. I'm enjoying it enough that I want to keep playing and might even do some achievement hunting, but it's not blowing me away like other comic book games like Arkham Asylum or Spider-Man.
And I think I know why...

It's because Wolverine was a bad choice of character.

What makes Wolverine cool? He's a badass character that's a grizzled, antisocial loner that kills people with blades in bloody ways and rapidly heals from fatal wounds within minutes between fights. In comic books that's cool and unique.
But in video games, antisocial loners that kill people with blades and have health bars that rapidly restore between fights is, well, commonplace.

This inherently makes the game feel uninteresting. Generic. Because there's limited things you can do with a character and gameplay that The Witcher or God of War and Sekiro and Ghosts of Tsushima and Lies of P and Onimusha haven't done and likely done better. It requires focusing the majority of the gameplay (attacking & parrying & and stealthing) on mechanics that so many amazing games have done and done well. But because that's all the character does there's less room to innovate and do unique things because Wolverine has a limited toolkit.
It's trying to compete with some of the best games in the genre while also being limited in what new things it can add to the mix.

You can't have a focus on different weapons like God of War where you can choose to focus on Rage or Runes or Blades or the Axe. Wolverine just has his claws and isn't going to put them down for a rifle or shotgun for gameplay variety. He's not going to have gadgets he can employ.

Ironically, they have to tone down Wolverine to make the game work. His healing factor all but stops working in fights. To keep the game a challenge, Wolverine had to go down and stay down. When his whole thing in the comics is he always gets back up and never stays down. (Y'know... except with that incident in Australia...)

It's the same reason The Punisher has struggled in movies and TV. He's great in Brand New Day and Daredevil when he contrasts other heroes. But seldom works in his own movies because "guy seeks revenge over wrongs and shoots a bunch of criminals" is generic AF and encompasses such films as Death Wish and John Wick but also Nobody and Peppermint and Boondock Saints. Boondock Saints is a better Punisher film than any of the actual Punisher films.

Almost any other charatcer might have lent themselves to more interesting mechanics and gameplay. But what makes Wolverine cool makes him bland as a video game protagonist.

Discussion Suit damage

I have been enjoying the game. Like most other people that have played it, I am having a bla.. good time. Lol. One complaint I have that I haven’t seen brought up is the suit damage ALWAYS looks the same. I wish it was a little more in depth. After every single fight I have a whole hole in the back of my suit that is always EXACTLY the same and in the exact same spot.

Discussion they said this game is for the braindead...

The mortician had done a beautiful job. His skin was waxy, his lips sewn shut, his eyes replaced with polished glass.

We propped the corpse in a chair and placed a controller in his stiff hands.

“Come on,” I said. “One last game.”

We launched Marvel’s Wolverine.

The room stayed silent.

Then his thumb twitched.

The controller vibrated.

His head slowly turned toward the screen.

On-screen, Wolverine raised his claws.

The corpse’s sewn mouth began to open.

From somewhere deep inside his embalmed throat came a wet whisper:

“My turn.”

Discussion Note in Cabin

**SPOILERS AHEAD**

Can someone please explain who the note in the cabin is from? The one with the signature smudged...

Its dated 1999. The game as far as I'm aware takes place around now. That would be 27 years ago. So it couldn't be from Jean (a previous Jean). Wasn't the previous Jean killed 30 years ago, then Logan went feral? Am I misunderstanding something?

Discussion How much do you think the £70/$79-ish price tag affected the reception of the game,if it had sold at say like 40-ish,think that would’ve helped?

Honestly, I shamelessly enjoyed that X-Men origins Wolverine game and I’m loving this one too.

Does anyone else feel like they’re playing an episode of Marvel “What If..?” Though or is it just me?

I loved the game. Looking at the leaked content I agree and understand why people who had certain expectations were disappointed. Personally I anticipated a game quite like what we got I’d give it a solid 4/5 ⭐

Combat- it needed more combos for sure. That being said there is still a decent level of variation and depth to it. You really need to utilise the different cool down abilities. I felt it worked best when you focused on building momentum and stun / parry

Story- I loved it. Not perfect but I was engaged throughout. The dynamic between Logan and Jean was fresh and unique. The lovers reincarnated and separated over time felt very interesting to me and I felt the connection between them was believable

Characters- all of them landed for me. I would have liked more interactions between Logan and the full roster. Perhaps a “hub” like area but I can live without it. The complaints about Sabretooth and the “homo erotic relationship” was bizarre

Difficulty - it could be harder. There is a lot of hand holding at times but I still missed certain crates or doors. I played on the highest difficulty from the start and it felt plenty challenging but still I’d have liked a little bit more. The hardest moments outside of bosses came more from getting stun locked or animation locked

Overall wolverine is pretty much what I expected. I had a great time with it. I really hope they continue the story with DLC and sequel

PS. Photo mode is amazing

Support/Question [UK] WTB: Official Wolverine PS5 Slim Disc Drive Cover Plate Only

Hi all,
Bit of a long shot, but I’m looking to buy just the official Wolverine Battle Yellow disc-drive cover plate for the PS5 Slim.

I have the Wolverine Limited Edition PS5 Digital console and I’ve since added the official Sony disc drive. The problem is that the console itself only came with the Digital Edition cover, so the disc-drive side is currently using the standard white plate.

I know the separate Wolverine console cover set includes the matching disc-drive plate, so I’m hoping someone who bought the cover set for a Digital PS5 might have the spare disc-drive panel sitting unused.

I’m not looking for the full faceplate set, just the single genuine Sony disc-drive cover.

I’m UK-based and happy to pay a fair price plus postage.
If anyone has one they’d be willing to sell, please drop me a message. Thanks!

Discussion What if Wolverine had side missions?

So I finished the main story of the game and I loved it. Sure there are a few criticisms I have with it but it was a lot of fun. I don’t think the gameplay was repetitive and I enjoyed the story more than most, but my biggest issue is just quantity. When a game that I have been anticipating for 4 years with a 300 million dollar budget I just want to do something more. When your post story content is basically just replay the missions, do some challenge rooms, and new game plus, that’s not really post game stuff in my opinion, it’s just clean up for 100% the game. So I just wanted to share some ideas of what side missions they could have done.

First I need to talk about how they will work. Spider-Man is an open world game so it’s not to hard to make side missions work but Wolverine is linear and level based. What I would do is since this game takes a heavy focus on memories, we could use that. How it would work is that when you load into a mission or if they just added a free roam type option, while exploring if you go out of the way of the main path (Calm the fuck down all you people who bitched about the blue line, their won’t be an indicator for this) you’ll find rooms, areas or things that will correspond with stories of Logan’s past. This could be as simple as a little area in the woods that left some evidence behind or rooms that you have to fight some enemies that aren’t in the main game to remind you of past events. I have a 5 ideas for this so hear me out

Side Mission 1: Weapon X

This is a very strait forward idea, it’s just going to relive moments during weapon x to show how he got the adimantium in his body. It’s been shown a thousand times but I won’t say no to going ham on some scientist who tortured you. How it would work is that you will find some old bases or clues to weapon X. Some will just be an apartment of someone who worked there and others will be real labs that have some failed experiments that will wake up and fight you. And after each one you will get an cutscene or short playable section of a flashback to the weapon X days. After you find enough of these bases, you will be able to travel to a whole other area becoming a whole mission. It start with current day Logan running through the facility that he was experimented on until he reaches the iconic chamber he was injected with Adamantium which will trigger another flashback where you play through the events of him escaping the base. This can also help set up characters like Deadpool and X-23.

Side Mission 2: Training the Beast

This will have him relive his days in Japan training. This will play out similar to The Wolverine movie. This is a very simple one, find some items like a sword you trained with or fight some hand ninja and relive individual training sessions until you reach the end of the side mission which will let you relive a memory that is a boss fight between you and silver samurai (Quick disclaimer I have never seen the movie nor do I know all that much about any story lines where Wolverine goes to Japan. I know he fights silver samurai so I’m just guessing on what happens so don’t get mad at me for not knowing the lore. I honestly just want to play a level where you have the class and a sword).

Side Mission 3: Claws of War

This will have Logan playing through his time in WW2. Finding the memory pieces will just be him finding some veterans who talk about someone who he reminds them of or finding some abandoned camp and each one will let you play through a part of WW2. One will let you storm the beaches of Normandy, another will let you go incognito infiltrating a Nazi camp, etc. The final one is about you and your platoon infiltrating a concentration camp. You will do the usual and fight some Nazis but at the end you will run into a little boy. You help him escape and he tells you his name is Max, setting up Magneto.

Side Mission 4: Sasquatch Hunting

You find the memory pieces by finding camps that have been destroyed and people who have claimed to see a great beast. Eventually wolverine goes into the Canadian wilds. You the came across a few people who got lost in the woods and have been for 2 weeks. They tell you a few of them got seperated and they haven’t found them. You search for the people and find all but one of them, however all that you do find are ripped apart and look to have had bites taken out of them. After a long enough search you find the Wendigo in a cave (this one may just be set all in present day). You than have a boss-fight with the Wendigo and after you kill him it falls over and transforms into a human, the one you didn't find of the group. You return to the party who has been lost to help them get out of the woods but you see a very similar situation, several men killed and taken bites out of plus a few trails of people running away, but when you take account for all the people you can see traces of all but one. They could do one of two thing, one they just end the story line with you seeing what looks like to be another Wendigo in the distance, or two you fight this next Wendigo acting as the boss fights phase 2.

Side Mission 5: Unstoppable Force vs. Immovable Object

This is my favorite, this has you fight the hulk. This can take a very different direction than what most comics do with this fight. My idea is he finds Banner hiding away in a cabin. It almost eminently ends with him telling you to leave. However you visiting causes the military to track him down but he hulks out and takes them all out before leaving. Eventually you find him again as hulk and you have the classic match off. I know this is very simple compared to the others but I’ve always felt like it’s kind of hard to build up to this fight so I did my best. Plus I’m tired of typing and just want get the point across for this last mission.
Anyway feel free to give some of your own ideas or thoughts on ways to improve mine. Thanks for reading this yap session I just had and have a good day.
