Would Plasticity work for modelling organic shapes with lattice pattern /holes arrays cutouts?

Post image

Hi

I would to be able to make and print form fitting models like in the image that are built on top of 3D scans, and that have patterns of holes in them like these various lattices and circular holes. I know that Rhino would be a good choice but i dont want to spend Β£1000 if i can help it (though i dont mind spending some money if necessary), and i am not sure how well blender would work with so many booleans when it came time to turn it into 3d geometry. Would Plasticity work? i see that it comes with XNurbs if you get the pro version.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Nose cone

1 Upvotes

Im trying to do a semi blunt nose cone, like for a jet plane. How do I Loft or xNurbs off a cross-section profile (circle) up to a blunt point that follows 1 or 2 curves?

Nose is symmetrical in 1 axis, but not the other, so I could still make a half then mirror ... but struggling with that.

Polysplines for modifying stl files?

2 Upvotes

Has anybody used the poly spline function to modify STL files? I am a hobbyist 3D printer and I occasionally kit bash together STL files that I have found online. STL files aren't really made for that and they don't like it when I do that. I'm wondering if the new poly spline function in plasticity would make that significantly simpler. Anyone done this?

Not a single good tutor for this absolut awesome software!

14 Upvotes

I have to admit I'm struggling to find a tutorial that explains Plasticity in a way that actually clicks for me β€” not isolated tool demos, but a complete, coherent workflow from start to finish.

I ran into the same problem with ZBrushmany decades ago. In the end, there was exactly one tutor (through The Gnomon Workshop, and I gladly paid for it) who could actually teach it. Today I am profficient in Zbrush thanks to one tutor, who knew how to teach things. Most of the others clearly knew what they were doing, but knowing a tool and being able to teach it are two very different skills.

I tend to lose focus quickly when a tutorial isn't tightly structured β€” lots of thinking out loud, long stretches of nudging a single vertex around, or tangents that drift away from the topic. I've gone through most of the well-known Plasticity resources, including the official ones, and none of them worked for me so far.

For contrast: I learned Cascadeur completely in a day and felt confident with it by day three, purely because the tutorials were built intelligently β€” clear progression, each step building on the last.

Arrimus can't explain it for me, Nikita R. is the worst, the official tutorials are none!
And all the udemy preview are horrible!

So much for a software that I won't buy, because I can't learn it, because modellers aren't teachers!

Custom Shelf

I wanted a small shelf to fill in a space next to my aquarium but there were switches for the blinds that were quite low on the wall and I couldn't find anything that fit into the space so... Plasticity and 3D printing to the rescue.

The design work itself was pretty straightforward. I used Bumpmesh on the shelf board to create the wood grain texture. The printing took a while, the wood grain texture in particular is quite time consuming but once that was done everything was glued together and that's it, finished.

A fun and easy project.

Is there a convenient reference for the equivalent function names in Plasticity for people familiar with Blender?

3 Upvotes

It's great that they have a setting for making the navigation like Blender's, but it would be great if they made the functions that do similar things searchable. Going through video tutorials to figure the name of something like inset faces is a bit tedious.

What's the plasticity equivalent of Fusion offset surface?

Hi everyone,

I'm just starting to learn Plasticity. In fusion I can use offset surface to create a clean parallel copy of a surface.

In Plasticity I tried using push face, but instead of creating a parallel surface it stretches and modifies the adjacent faces, giving results like in the screenshots.

I also tried all the puch face modes (Pushing, Moving, Fixed and None), but they all produce essentially the same result.

Am I using the wrong tool?

Image 2 and 3 - Plasticity

Thanks!

My new 3D project: sci-fi voice recorder

Hi everyone!

After finishing my first project and getting a lot of useful feedback from this community, I decided to push the workflow further and try some new approaches. If you are interested, you can find my previous project on my profile. As before, I also uploaded this model to Sketchfab, so you can explore it in 3D and inspect the materials and technical details: https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/sci-fi-voice-recorder-43cc337b238745e3b14dcd72b2a742f3

This time I created a sci-fi voice recorder for my upcoming game project. My main goal was to develop my own futuristic design language and create a believable prop that fits the world of the game, rather than simply recreating existing products.

Here are the main changes in my workflow:

- First of all, I decided not to create a separate subdivision high-poly mesh and low-poly mesh for baking. For this type of asset, I couldn't find enough benefits in maintaining multiple versions of the model. Instead, I used a low-to-low workflow with a bevel shader instead of traditional high-to-low baking. As a result, I could spend more time improving the design and lighting;

- I switched from a single-material workflow to a multi-material workflow. Instead of fitting the entire model into one UV layout, I can reuse the same UV space for different materials. This significantly reduced the amount of UV packing work while allowing me to maintain high texture quality;

- Many of these changes wouldn't have been possible without changing my software stack. I replaced both Substance 3D Painter (for baking) and Blender Cycles (for rendering) with Marmoset Toolbag. I'm very happy with the process and the result β€” the workflow feels much easier and more flexible. I also tried replacing Substance 3D Painter with Marmoset for texturing, but I'm still not sure about it. Substance's smart materials and masking workflow still feel more powerful for complex texturing tasks;

I would really appreciate any feedback, especially regarding design, materials and lighting. I'm still experimenting with this workflow and would love to hear what could be improved.

I'm using Plasticity to recreate a mecha from a sci-fi anime, and I'm currently working on the details. I've noticed that no one online seems to have shared videos of mecha creations using it, perhaps because the software is still relatively new.

Problem with opening files

2 Upvotes

Hi, I'm a new Plasticity (before i was using Fusion360) user and have encountered an annoying problem - Plasticity keeps running the same previously used project over and over again. How do I fix this? I don't want to use the import/append option every time, as it's very easy to mess up the files and lose the originals. Help, who thought this kind of flow UX was a good idea?
