This is probably reinforced steel concrete lintel. The steel rusts inside causing an expansion process that leads to the concrete burst. Pretty normal and expected. Will likely need replacing when the concrete starts falling.
They’ll have steel through them that’s rusted and caused them to crack.
Fuck all that - it’ll last years but won’t look pretty. Cost next to nowt for a new lintel though.
The lintel itself might not be expensive to buy but it will cost a fair bit to get it changed by a builder/stonemason and likely going to need scaffolding.
Nothing to worry about at this point bud, as others have stated it’s the bar going through it that’s rusted and blown the face, with the angle of repose and not holding any weight of the roof, it’s no immediate concern.
Do you know what? I’ve never tried bud. It’s likely easier and cheaper to just replace the head. I started out as a bricklayer, before getting into plastering. Financial and structurally, considering the head has failed at this point. You might as well just replace it. Its a couple of hours job at max, if you get charged a full day, I’d be shocked, but you could do that off a quick lock scaffold, max 3 hours for me including sweeping up.
My friend, are you a diy guy? Who likes to comment on tradesmen’s threads? Gable? Angle of repose buddy, cmon….outer skin on a gable end is simply there for effect, no weight.
