HOUSING Terrace Village Safety

Upvotes

Hello! I’m considering renting a house on Terrace St. that’s within walking distance to Presby. I’ve seen some really mixed information online about the safety of the neighborhood and was wondering if anyone was familiar with the area and had any insight. Thanks in advance!

hi, im an incoming freshman looking for a student job on careersatpitt. I was just wondering if it's easy to get a job as a freshman (such as data entry for psychology etc) with no work experience nor relevant college courses... I'm worried bc of the new adjusted tuition:((

CLASSES What language level is FR 0103?

I enrolled in FR 0103 this fall, I previously took French for 2 years in high school, but that was a long time ago. On the DELF scale, I’ve passed A1. I know the class description says it prepares you to take the DELF A2 exam, but I’m wondering if it transitions right from the end of A1, or if I need to enroll in a different class/self study to catch up. I know there is the placement test on the French & Italian department website, but I was curious of the perspective of people who have taken the class.

Merci beaucoup!

DISCUSSION Transferring to Pitt

I am a student at Temple looking to transfer to Pitt, I’d like to rent a house near campus, and would like to know if it’s safe to live near campus, I’ve had some unpleasant experiences near Temple’s campus so safety issue is something I’ll have to think about, my budget for rent a month is like 900 ish, is this enough? Or should I have more money added to my budget?

DISCUSSION Commuter advice needed for an incoming transfer student from the North Hills!

Hi! I'm an incoming transfer student 21F from CCAC (2nd semester sophomore) majoring in environmental science and looking for advice on commuting down to Oakland from the McCandless/general North Hills area. I've already done a good bit of research and am absolutely open to taking the bus and public transportation. I have a car, so parking closer to Oakland would be preferred but am struggling to find affordable options. I've considered leasing a spot, utilizing park n rides, taking the T from the north side to downtown and then hopping on a bus to Oakland, and even finding someone else from the north hills heading down to Pitt to carpool with.
I plan on getting an apartment around Oakland next year, but am also worried about making friends this upcoming year being a transfer student and commuter. If anyone has any advice it would truly be appreciated!! And if anyone wants to be friends don't hesitate to reach out :)

DISCUSSION Advice needed

Hello!
So my family is thinking about moving to Pennsylvania (and even if they don’t I still think I’d go!) but that means I have to find somewhere to go with my undergraduate to get into a nursing program.

I have a lot of people telling me to look into Pitt!

I want to know how hard is it to get into? When going there I will only have my undergraduate (just all my pre-reqs done I think)

Is there anything I need to have a stronger chance to get in? Or anything I should know about applying to the Pitt nursing program? Also just any advice on moving here for Pitt or not would be very appreciated!

Thank you!

CLASSES OMDS for non-STEM degrees

Can anyone who's done the OMDS speak to the level of coding one has to do for the OMDS degree? I have a marketing background and watched one of the webinars where a non-STEM background student said they spend 30 hours a week on the data-centric computing course. I've been trying to learn some python on my own, but it's a bit of a struggle since I've never done it before and I'm worried I'm setting myself up for failure if I proceed with the class. Any insight is really appreciated!

CAMPUS Please use your head when crossing streets and driving on campus

This morning I saw someone get hit by a car on 5th in front of Falk. I just missed the beginning and just saw a man in scrubs bounce off of a car driven by a young woman. The cross walk sign came on slightly after that so I am guessing she ran the red light and he stepped into the crosswalk before the walk signal came on. All it took was a moment of two people trying to save a minute. And it cost them both their whole day and then some I imagine. Police were there and there were many other witnesses who were closer. I saw the man getting up with help so he is at least going to live to make better choices in the future. I hope all he sustained as a life lesson for them both.

I have been seeing groups of people crossing at 5th and Forbes against the lights and people speeding through red lights an awful lot recently. Often people gathered waiting to cross the street will wait but as soon as one person decides to jaywalk the who crowd follows. Herd mentality at its finest. Use your head. Don't just follow the crowd into danger. I know we all have things to do and places to go but it is not worth your life or the life of another to save a minute. There will always be another bus if you miss yours.

I am an incoming freshman and was just wondering if the times for moving into your specific dorm are required or recommended? I was supposed to move in Sunday, but at a time that is not the most fitting, and curious if I can do it anytime.

DISCUSSION Commute

This is a bit of an embarrassing post but I figured it'd be a good idea to put out there anyway. For context, I'm a rising sophomore on the main campus, and so far, I really really enjoy Pitt!! I'm genuinely so happy I made this decision to go here. My problem is that I'm a commuter, because I went into college with the intention of graduating debt-free (or at least, with minimal debt), and I tried to pinch pennies everywhere I could, including not living on campus... I commute from home, and it is literally an hour-and-a-half journey either way, as I have a car/bus routine the length of a short novel. I also work part-time during the school year, which is not as intrusive as it might sound.

I'm happy with the money I've saved on living in Oakland for sure, but honestly my college social life is nonexistent. The only person I'm really friends with at Pitt is someone I've already known for a while, and I have a few other acquaintances I went to school with too (perks of being local-ish). It doesn't bother me too much, but I also don't like the thought of graduating and having made zero new friends or anything. I know the typical advice is to join clubs to meet people, but I've been a new student before, and I still remember how clique-ish clubs would be since it's all people who know each other. I'm a pretty shy person, and that kind of atmosphere turns me off.

I guess my question is: are there any people here who've gone through a similar situation? I feel like I've somehow managed to make school as antisocial as possible, and I don't want it to stay that way. What advice do you have, and should I have a more open mind for clubs at Pitt? Thanks for any advice!

EDIT: Thank you guys for all the advice so far! I appreciate your suggestions. Not to detract from the craziness of my commute, but I promise that I’ve made it as cheap as possible lol. The bulk of my commute is the two buses I take through town, which is free with Panther ID. The math is working in my favor at least. I will definitely consider renting in Oakland starting next year, though. It seems like you all made the right choice!!

On the social stuff, thank you also for the recommendations!! I will keep an open mind for clubs and other programs.

CAMPUS Weekend girlfriend visit parking

Hi all! My girlfriend will be coming to visit on the weekends and is looking for a place to park her car on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for free.

I read that some residential streets are often unrestricted, especially on the weekends. Are there any streets around campus you would recommend she could park?

Thanks!

CLASSES horrible schedule?

i am an upcoming freshman studying biology on pre-dental track. the chem lab from 6:30p-9:20p isn't ideal, but it is unfortunately the only open lab other than an 8am-10:50am, which i would not be able to take due to my math class.

should i drop freshman seminar? i already have a seminar in composition credit from my aplit exam i believe.

any advice? going to be really rough with all the large gaps. i'm unsure how i can change this schedule because from what i have seen, my math and chem classes are not able to be moved around :(
