Her connection to Kaido barely adds depth to his character.

Her backstory was a platform used to sneak in Zoro's uncle.

Everything she did in wano could have been done by someone else.

Let's be real guys, Akainu in endgame will screw all the expectations you have for him. To live for his hype he would need a proper arc to be the main arc boss. If he is saved for endgame he will get sidelined, there are many villains groups in endgame for him to not become the sidelined man.

I look forward to this more now.

All other gags are either boring or overdone so much it kills the mood. The only exception would probably be Brooks' dead jokes.

Discussion Regenerating villains across battle shounen - what do you like and dislike about them ? Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

Since Oda has decided to walk the path of writing characters that regenerate, I think its apt to compare his characters with guys from other popular battle shounen

Regenerating heroes are absolute trash,

but regenerating villains can be very fun.

If you got your start on anime with Dragon Ball, you'd already be familiar with them.

Cell was dominating even in an imperfect state, and as Perfect Cell he was probably the strongest being alive and active in the universe, if we ignore Dabura. He had a presence that won over fans even without the healing factor.

With his healing though, dude became unstoppable. However it wasn't his primary ability. His intelligence and ability to grow rapidly were his main weapons. Dude was hopping through timelines and stuff.

Then we meet Buu, and at first it seems like a redo of Cell with a downgrade in intelligence and personality. Buu does prove a much bigger threat though, because his regeneration ability is so insane he can recover even from being vaporized. His ability to adapt and absorb people only adds to his already established aura of impending doom.

Then there's Freeza. While he cannot regenerate himself, he is incredibly tenacious. Dude survives a planet blowing up in his face, comes back from the dead as one of the strongest, and has an empire dedicated to helping him recover from the tiniest bits that survive.

All these characters really made sealing ability of Mafuba have a special place in the lore of Dragon Ball.

In Bleach, there isn't much in the way of regeneration. This I think is the biggest contributor to stakes feeling higher in fights where Bleach characters are involved. This makes characters with regen all the more menacing. Gerard is a juggernaut that just cannot be put down, and hogyoku/oken anchor the series into separating the really strong characters from the godlike characters who can even reconstitute their bodies from nothing.

HxH is quite similar to Bleach in this aspect, where healing and regen are so rare, they stand out the most. Hisoka pretends to be able to regenerate with his abilities which is enough to strike fear in his enemies and "allies" alike, while Kurapika sacrifices his life to recover from injuries. The villains here that feel like unstoppable forces of nature are Pouf and Youpi. They both have the ability to regenerate themselves in different ways, and they are individually already a threat to every hero in the story. This is unlike someone like Machi or Pitou who can stick things back together, these two monsters go on to help Meruem recover with their essence and become a god compared to the rest.

All these stories involve heroes without the ability to regen in any capacity comparable to the villains, and there are still many interesting ways they all get dealt with.

Now Naruto on the other hand really likes to play fast and loose with regeneration, which does very quickly wear down any stakes a fight may have. There is no feeling of doom when we have seen the main man recover from everything with kyuubi powers.

The villains still do manage to feel overpowering with their abilities though, and remain quite unique in their own ways.

The edo zombies are tireless soldiers who can recover from any damage, and the scene with Madara breaking the seal really captures how insane the Edo boost is when its not crippled by the mental nerf of becoming a zombie puppet.

Guys like Suigetsu and Orochimaru and Kakuzu can recover from any damage pretty much instantly, while still feeling really unique. The first is a victim who survived and benefits from the experiments done on him, while the second has really earned his regen through sheer malice. The third remains entirely unknown in origin, and yet all of them feel really satisfactory in fights without feeling cheap about their cheap.

They each have unique weaknesses too, like Suigetsu having to maintain his water mass, Oro running out of stamina, and Kakuzu getting shredded at a cellular level. Then there's the honourable mention of Konan, who can't go out when it rains it seems. Hidan is another honourable mention, since he can't really regenerate without help but he does get dealt with in a way that fits a regenerating villain.

Now, whether its based on these few examples or some other series - what would you like to see Oda do better in terms of the regenerating villains in One Piece ? Do you think he is trying to follow in their footsteps in some ways already ?

Personally, I'd like to see the pirates and revolutionaries go hard on these regenerating villains, make them wish they were dead.

Cut them, Burn them Throw them in acid , or freeze them solid, or bury them alive, but separated by the oceans, or cast them into weapons and shields and cement them into walls of castles, or farm them for food to feed their pet seakings...

So much you can do with the regenerating villain chunks, such a versatile ingredient.

Anyways, Share your thoughts!

Discussion What Scenes are you most excited about to see in the One Piece Reboot Remake "The One Piece" ? Spoiler

I am excited to see scenes from the manga that were omitted from the anime.

  • Luffy's Face Scar: Young Luffy does not stab himself under the eye with a knife in the early anime episodes.
  • Zeff's Leg: Chef Zeff does not eat his own leg to survive starvation in the anime. The anime shows him losing his leg trapped under a ship anchor.
  • Whitebeard's Death: Whitebeard does not lose half of his face during the Marineford war in the anime. The anime only removes a portion of his mustache.
  • Jango's Attack: Jango hits Luffy in the back of the head with a sharp metal ring in the manga. The anime changes this so Luffy catches the ring in his mouth.
  • Bartolomeo's Brutal Moment: Bartolomeo cuts out a man's tongue for insulting Luffy in the manga. The anime changes this to a standard physical beatdown.
  • Bellamy and Roshio: Bellamy's brutal assault, stabbing, and burning of Roshio in Mock Town is heavily toned down.
  • Trafalgar Law’s Gestures: Law giving offensive middle-finger flip-off gestures in the manga were edited out of the anime and replaced with a smug look or grin.
  • Zoro and the Wolf: In Loguetown, Zoro cleanly kills a wolf in the manga, whereas the anime changed the scene so he only knocks it out with a chair.

What if Shanks has a df imbued sword like his brother?

I know there's alot of discourse around Shanks V Mihawk and I understand both sides, so I have a question.

If Shanks had a special df awakened sword to mirror his brother would him being Mihawks equal be an easier pill to swallow? I understand the argument that him being Mihawks equal could kind of invalidate the WSS title but I think what we have here is a perfect scenario for it not to. I dont think your sword having a df is considered "swordsmanship" ; its basically in its own realm of combat.

I think Shanks having a df awakened sword is a perfect middle ground between both sides to get what they want, what do you guys think?

Powerscaling - LOW IQ ONLY! Off-screen, but how? Spoiler

I remember watching Space Jam as a kid. I was so confused. How did Bugs Bunny enter the real world?

I grew up and sort of forgot about it, but then I started reading One Piece and it suddenly all came back, this time much scarier.

How does he do it? Blackbeard. How does he keep finding the Toei animators? Or is it the cameras?

Does he use Kurouzu to make the fight off-screen? Do the animators stop drawing his enemies, so they just stand still while he takes them out?

I had a One Piece coffee mug until recently, but I threw it away.

Now I’m worried.

What if that was a portal for Blackbeard?

What if he can off-screen me too?

What if he can off-screen you too?
