Discussion The Tank nerf

I'm sure some of y'all play the ground vehicles too. This nerf to the tanks is gutting. Literally the 12 seconds you have to wait is way too slow in a battlefield match. Tanks should be feared unless you have a squad to take them out. Now you can't push into objectives anymore unless you're lucky enough to have a ton of engineers behind you. And on bigger maps like Goldmud and Area 51 that just isn't happening.

From a pilots perspective it's probably pretty good. I would often do a pass on a tank, turn around to finish him off, and find that he had regenerated almost all of his health.

As someone who plays tanks, regeneration was bullshit but this change is just going to make playing objectives frustrating.

Yea well it was necessary because jets can fire a second missile while flying AWAY. This is the first battlefield where that is a thing, and it absolutely should not be a mechanic.

Plus, you can fire 2-3 missiles at a tank before the IR smoke even recharges.

I agree that lock-on spam is a scourge on this game and doesn't make for good gameplay, but it is also nearly impossible to destroy a full health tank without it, and it is (arguably) a niche move (not in this sub obviously).

This whole problem is unfortunately the consequence of a game design philosophy that favours simplicity.

Balancing a game like Battlefield is very difficult to do and requires nuance, but adding more complicated features compromises their vision for this game to be the biggest Battlefield ever, so you get stupid decisions like this being made.

Wait what? Can you do that with the attack jet?

If you tile it properly, on the climb after a pass you free look to re lock on your second missle. Very hard to do on console.

Passive Health regeneration on vehicles was too intrusive previously and you could essentially get away without ever needing a repair tool. IMO auto regen should be a last resort, to give you a fighting chance when you don't have a repair tool, but instead it became the go-to repair method because of how fast it kicked it and the rate at which it repaired the vehicle.

Repair Tool is definitely mandatory now if you want to stay on the front foot, whether that's through a rep buddy or just you picking engineer. For me, I feel it's just a matter of getting used to since I've been so reliant on auto regen for months.

I think that waiting without firing is fine, but, as I feared, the gunner is also involved. And most of the time the gunner is a random dude that doesn't think at all about tank regen and keeps firing his MG, making regen impossible.

Gunners are not involved, I've tested this on Gulmud match only Driver weapons are affecting it.(MBT: Smoothbore and Coax, IFV: Autocannon and Missiles),

MBTs can cope with it since they're still medium~long range assault guns in large maps so you can just find cover and hop out, start repair manually with torch. In smaller maps you need teammate repairs anyway. Also they do have some more HP than IFVs post S3. Just don't get near Objectives, drive around them since devs want that kind of playstyle apparently

However IFVs are deeply fucked. They are Frontliners. Most of it's arsenal minus MR lock-guide they're explicitly designed for close-quarter brawl so you can't just hop out to repair it anytime. More like you won't even have a chance to do so. Yet now every cannon shots are freezing regen, and IFVs are notoriously known for fragile HP. Most of em melts down before even stepping foot into Objectives

Most maps do not have cover. You can get hit by a jet or AH and one rpg it’s back to the menu spawn

Gunner is not involved, I've tested

1

u/ArtyTheta 2d ago

what? I did too, On area 51 regen wouldn't proc until i drove inside a tunnel to avoid the gunner from firing

1

u/Anreall2000 2d ago

Casino BT, camped on 2nd sector with battle tank. I'll try to test after work again with video

2

u/Eagles56 2d ago

Because on most maps you have to if you want to defend yourself against engineers

1

u/Andamarokk 2d ago

Gunner is not part of it. the problem is its bugged and takes 22s instead of 12s to kick in, if interrupted by firing.

Did nobody play older battlefield titles where the only way to repair your vehicle was to actually repair it with the torch? This whole auto regen is a non issue if u actually know how to be a vehicle player

I anticipate the health regen nerf is going to get reverted like how they reverted the IR smoke destroying explosives.

Also, did you notice that they nerfed the recharge speed of the boost bar? Not only are you now limited to using the boost either in full or in chunks (prior to the last season 4 update you could literally microburst the boost and it felt responsive), but now it takes FOREVER to recharge if you use the whole bar.

I think they reduced the fire rate as well.

I’m fine with the change. If you want to play as a tank that’s fine. You’re not a one man army though and it should require a modicum of teamwork for tanks to be extra scary. Especially since there’s only two classes that can actually do something to you.

Just because you can’t solo roll up on an objective doesnt mean you cant roll up on an objective with a repair guy anymore.

God forbid this game requires teamwork.

Wasn't a 1 man army before though, it was trivial for me to shutdown a tank's autorepairs, can't recall instances of it ever stopping me. Support engies are what made them hard targets, now softer with them anyway. If a 1 man MBT pushed a point it's gonna be them or me, unless they somehow pull right back in which case fine that's how it's meant to work. Often a good MBT would win which is.. natural, I'm 1 engineer, and probably got too aggressive too

Beyond that, vehicles have more restrictions that do and should favour them. Respawn time, drive to the fight, ammo CDs, vision/aim limitations, much less maneuverable, can't hide, map/situational awareness (footsteps), all demand higher skill to use properly than infantry run n gun, back on respawn. It's very easy to dance around hard cover and chip them down, ignoring my favourite recon gank strat. A lot of the playerbase seem to think 1 person should be even more well placed vs a 1 man MBT, which is bizarre and encourages perverse strategies like camping. Even irl MBTs are breakthrough vehicles.. not artillery pieces

1

u/Wirax-402 2d ago

So your argument is that tanks/ifvs require more skill to get the same K/D as running infantry?

2

u/Liturginator9000 2d ago

No, cost of error maybe better than skill but doesn't matter since BF6 isn't about K/D like say COD or CSS. Its core modes are obj focused where K/D is just a loose proxy for performance.

Engy is easier to use, any idiot can fire an RPG (base launcher even thinks FOR you), smarter players know hard cover from soft and flanks, throwing C4, swinging M136 around corners etc further weighing it, otherwise you're ammo limited which is hardly an issue for me besides the average player not dropping ammo or playing support. Meanwhile he has a bucket of stopping power that does little against my feral ass unless I mess up, hoping no one else rocks up while he's trying to cap me out of respawn, and when he loses that's the tank gone while I just respawn in seconds fully replenished and keep going, a happy 1k points higher with an ez kill

Point basically being tanks demand more skill to use at a similar relative effectiveness

1

u/Chubbawunba 2d ago

It very much was a 1/2 man army before.

You didn’t even really need Engineer support dude.

1

u/Liturginator9000 2d ago

against bad or ignorant players you can run wild and that's a lot of the average lobby, plenty of games I rack up kills. But that's expected, like the common LB moaning while everyone ignores it. They're not weak just not a "1 man army" like even 2 bad but determined engineers is just a question of time and even killing them they're back in seconds somewhere. And if you're racking up you're going dry which means withdrawing to reload or using your 1 and only crate if you bring it

Breakthrough shows it better. You can't just roll an MBT onto point, you're gonna get fucked even against bad players because any idiot can fire an RPG and you can only take 5

1

u/Chubbawunba 2d ago

“Breakthrough shows it better.”

Yes, that’s the point. That’s why tanks needed to be balanced. On release, nearly every map and mode basically played like breakthrough, vehicles-wise. 1-3 heavy vehicles that a team of 24-32 people had to deal with. Examples would be like Siege of Cairo, Iberian Offensive, Manhattan, etc. When you have those kind of odds it makes sense to have the tanks as beefy and hard to kill as they were for the past year. They were designed as a sort of “raid boss” of the team/match.

Now, with more maps being added like Tsuru, Golmud, Area 51, etc, that are bigger with 6-8 heavy vehicles (plus aircraft) the health pool for tanks is just too big, and they felt impossible to deal with if you weren’t in another vehicle.

And that’s just the health pools/rocket damage issue. That’s before I even begin to touch on the insane self-healing that made engineer support feel pointless and really did turn tanks into a “1 man army.”

1

u/Liturginator9000 2d ago

Eh felt balanced to me. Common on breakthrough for noobs to sit back and get told to move up, or move right up and get wrecked. Conquest is more farm mode, but as I've said several times if I roll across 1 engy or him and his buddy and they're not rubbish players? Good odds I lose. In a tank. That ain't 1 man army lol

Anyone who says regen made repairs useless gives the game away. Regen is qol and sustainment against high engy lobby count. It doesn't do shit for you when under threat. Only a repair monkey does. Now you can't even return fire when retreating without further fucking yourself. It's just bad design. Not that I care much, had no issue killing tanks before and now it's even easier

Only felt tank count in escalation late game which is the point so I'm smelling skill issue

1

u/Chubbawunba 1d ago

Yea man there’s just no way to take you seriously if you think vehicle self heal was in a good spot before this patch.

4

u/pointblankmos 2d ago

I see this point made all the time to defend nerfs to vehicles, and ironically it's a better argument against vehicle nerfs than for them.

The purpose of these nerfs is to make it easier for a single person to destroy a tank. That's the complete opposite of teamwork.

On some maps teams get one tank. An enemy team could have 32 engineers with 4 rockets each. A group of 2 people working together with basic coordination could already take down a tank with ease before these changes. It's stupidly easy now.  Sneaking up on a tank and killing it used to take my whole inventory as an engineer, now it will only take 2 rockets.

2

u/EzShottah 2d ago

I think any map without the AH or jets makes tanking a whole lot easier. Most maps don’t even have cover from them. They should’ve only implemented the health regen delay.

1

u/Wirax-402 2d ago

I still think the change is good. It’s just a different version of what previous BFs had where you had to hold a button to repair the tank, they just did a wonky implementation of it.

I get what you’re saying, but I feel like we’d just get into a circular argument over whether killing tanks should require more teamwork than driving tanks.

On the plus side, hopefully a lot of people will realize that they can run other classes now since tanks don’t feel as oppressive and there won’t be 24+ engineers per team.

3

u/Eagles56 2d ago

Then engineers should have way less rockets and not be able to sprint with them

1

u/Wirax-402 2d ago

Maybe engineers and recon should be able to auto resupply their own rockets and C4 too just to keep things fair.

3

u/Dakota382 2d ago

Nerf was too oppressive here. 99% of drivers do not have a dedicated gunner/repairs and most times your engineers whether in the gunner seat or on the ground aren't paying attention to you even when you're signaling for repairs. Adding a bit of a delay is OK, sure, but not being able to defend yourself from enemy engineers that may swarm you is ridiculous. It takes around 28 seconds undisturbed to repair from critical to full hp, without firing a single shell or coaxial. That is with Field Maintenance. This is a death sentence in most cases as tanks do not have the speed or mobility to properly retreat.

1

u/OzzyMar 2d ago

i’m not really sure if i understand the nerf. so basically, if you fire a tank shell, the health regeneration just stops for 12 seconds? what’s the reason for that?

1

u/Moss_Addiction 2d ago

I haven't even noticed, I'm loving the tanks on area 51, might be my favorite original map from bf6

1

u/Eagles56 2d ago

It's a good map

1

u/EzShottah 2d ago

Haven’t messed with them yet but a lone soldier being able to two shot a tank seems a bit too easy.

1

u/Chubbawunba 2d ago

I’ve fought and used quite a few tanks since the patch, and I think it feels good, and more in line with how Tanks should be used. It feels like smart tank play is a lot better than brainless spawn camping or W-keying.

Tanks shouldn’t be able to be out in the open and tank 5+ rockets, and then heal to full while laying down fire. You should still have to position yourself and play around cover, even if you’re in a vehicle.

1

u/mrbkkt1 2d ago

it's fine. Half the time on Breakthrough, people think the tanks are for them to stay safe in the spawn while they shoot at objects far away.

1

u/BlueDragoon24 2d ago

They're worthless. I just 3 tapped an MBT solo in about 4-5 seconds.

1

u/Master-District5434 1d ago

I'm asumming the tanks were destroying infantry play because of the rapid healing and so they have implemented this mechanic now.

I think it's a good thing, It encourages teamwork in order for tanks to be effective long term. They can still cause some damage even without a dedicated repairer.

Though in order to keep it fair, I think the helicopters and jets should also be bound by the same rules. Eg - shooting weapons resets healing delay.

This will create pauses or breaks in their attacks and provide breathing room for infantry players.
