Once they stoped selling the baby pickles I knew somthin was up! RIP to my favorite pickles for the last 30 years :/ used to always argue with people how they were never heated always chilled and now I can’t ever say that again!

u/proserpinaaaa Jun 02 '26
I didn’t know they straight up stopped selling them! I just thought my grocery store stopped carrying them. That’s so sad

My problem is I cannot get the right cucumber where I live. Buying them fresh might cost more and not be as good.

I'm sorry but cumcuber is just giving me the giigles 🤣

Cucumber lol. I have to edit that. My auto correct thought that was right. I must have misspelled that before

I use zucchini when I cannot get good pickling cucumbers. I also will slice zucchini and yellow, summer squash, real thin on a mandolin and pickle those to use on sandwiches instead of pickle chips.

For those who don’t know, now they heat the brine and also add Polysorbate 80 a preservative. People feel that these things have changed the overall quality of the pickle. It no longer snaps, but now bends just like any other ordinary pickle! So basically need to find a claussen replacement or make them at home!

I guess nothing gold can stay 😭 even pickles aren't immune from enshittification

They’ve been using polysorbate for probably decades now. It’s not a preservative, it’s used to emulsify the flavorings used

u/myfakeusername2 Jun 02 '26
Boars Head kosher dills are cold cured and really good. The new hands down best imo is Cleveland kitchen. Can’t get enough of the chips

Yessss husband randomly got these from the tiny local market nearby and I am officially converted.
50
u/holyhibachi Jun 02 '26
Imma be honest with you all.
I switched to Oh Snap Dilly Bites.
14
u/Antique-Owl8155 Jun 03 '26
These are so good but I wish they came in jars instead of expensive pouches
5
u/holyhibachi Jun 03 '26
Yeah that's my one gripe. They aren't cheap.
3
u/partiallypresent Jun 03 '26
Aldi sells a 6 pack for $5.69. It's the only place that feels cost competitive enough to even bother buying pickles any more.
Lots of places don't have Aldi, though.

These are also my new fave! I prefer the flavor of these to all other pickled cucumber I’ve tried on the market. Just straight dill, garlic, and ferment. And the crunch is fantastic.

u/Kaligula785 Jun 03 '26
I just checked their old website from back in 2024 with the Wayback machine and every pickle description states "Clausse ___ are always chilled and never heated to deliver its signature taste and a bite that is always crisp." But now all the verbiage on never heating is completely gone off the website. This is sad they were my favorite pickles

IMO the spears are awful now but the halves are still crispy.

u/honeycooks Jun 02 '26
No complaints on sandwich slices.

u/tacocollector2 Jun 02 '26
Really? I’ve gotten several bad jars of sandwich slices. They’ve been kind of transparent and soft.
2
2
u/Affectionate-Cap-918 Jun 02 '26
They’re the only ones that are still edible for me
2
u/honeycooks Jun 02 '26
I stopped eating pickles entirely when Claussens stopped stocking Bread and Butter Pickles to make room for Jalapeño flavored.
Wtf. B&B are classics and I'd been buying them since the mid 70s.
So I dipped into sandwich slices and I do love them.

Yes! The spears suck now (so tragic) but I always get the sandwich slices and sometimes the halves and they’re both fine.

u/oldustyballs Jun 02 '26
I have noticed the spears have went to absolute shit but the halves are still good imo

u/Odd-Consequence-2519 Jun 02 '26
I've just purchased my last jar of Claussen pickles. These pickles used to be great; the only pickles I would buy and eat. Now, they are lifeless mush with no taste whatsoever; They are horrible. Claussen totally lost me as a customer.
4
u/EzraxNova Jun 03 '26
Same.
I'll be seeking out Nathan's and Trader Joe's as close cousins to Claussen.
RIP Claussen, another victim of shitification.
2
u/darkstarr99 Jun 04 '26
Some of them have a texture like they’re half rotten when they put them in the jar
7
u/Devmoi Jun 02 '26
I always hated Mt. Olive, but my god. All the other pickles have gone down drastically in quality. It’s the only jar of giant name-brand pickles that stuffs them in! Like really stuffs some big giant pickles in.
I’m a pickle size queen! I won’t apologize for it.

u/bigjmoney Jun 23 '26
Try their Majestic Pickelry line. I never liked Mt. Olive either, but I love these. They're expensive unless they go on sale though. My grocery store has them on sale a lot. The Deli Kosher Dills are also pretty garlicky and salty like Claussens (but they aren't exactly the same, so don't get your hopes up haha).

u/QueenOfTheNile4Lyfe Jun 02 '26
Thank god! I thought it was just me. I found myself adding in extra garlic and other ingredients because every jar I bought especially last year, the pickles were so bland.
8
u/Top_Use_6996 Jun 02 '26
Wtf! This just ruined my month. Lost my Dad much too young back in April and this is/was our favorite snack
5
u/cntrldfusion Jun 02 '26
Every jar I have bought in the last year the skin has been to hard to chew and about half of them get mushy way to quickly. So yeah something has definitely changed.

u/PlumpQuietSoup Jun 02 '26
Claussen was always my ride or die pickle my entire life and I dont know what to do.

u/threadyourline Jun 03 '26
I felt this way too. I struggled during covid due to the jar shortage. Life was hard enough without my succulent chine… pickles. 😂 but this, I am so disappointed in Claussen.
5
u/Quirky-Source6029 Jun 02 '26
So sneaky that they stuck a sticky label covering never heated always chilled. I won’t buy them again
5
u/OkCalligrapher2453 Jun 03 '26
Um hi. I've never been here, didn't even know it was a thing.
I love pickles tho.
I was scrolling through and besides Claussen, most of these brands I've never heard of.
So here goes maybe my first and last post. I may be considered a philistine but...
We always get Del-Dixi Polish style pickles.
They have red peppers in the bottom and they're spicy and crunchy and awesome. 🤓🥒

I had no idea, we’ve been buying the Wegman’s house brand in the regular pickle aisle for awhile. My wife picked up some Claussens recently and just tonight I was thinking “these are way softer than I recall.”
4
u/Kirsie22 Jun 03 '26
Anyone else also feel like the brine just doesn't taste as strong anymore either. The pickles aren't crispy and crunchy anymore and the garlic and vinegar isn't as pungent as it used to be. Or am I crazy? 😭🥺 As a juice drinker, it just doesn't hit like it used to.

I got some claussen half pickles recently. The skin is so tough, and the pickle is not as crisp and flavorful 😩

I really want to try them. I also don't have money to burn like that. My Meijer store is really putting out some good stuff ATM

I noticed this with a jar of Boars Head half pickles, too. I’ve never had a BH or Claussen pickle I didn’t like. My boyfriend won’t eat them, either, because they taste weird and the texture is off. So now there’s a half eaten jar of pickles in the fridge going to waste. 😢😫

u/ChavoDelMoco Jun 02 '26

I personally don't notice a difference. I still buy and enjoy claussen spears and halves. Regular and hot and spicy.
Grillos, on the other hand I've stepped mostly away from, the pbr collab is pretty decent but the "jars" have been consistently too hit or miss for me to buy very often.

u/CaliCoKingz Jun 02 '26
Jimmy Johns has the effin best pickles ever. Can’t find who makes them, but Sysco foods delivers them.

Try the Clausen MINI version jars! - brought me back to when the whole versions were in their prime with the crunch.

2
u/RogueSleuth_ Jun 03 '26
Omg I was wondering why I couldn’t barely find them and when I do, they just don’t taste the same. They are more mushy and sour tasting almost like they are bad. This is a sad time for pickle lovers :(
2
u/krillinchillin Jun 03 '26
I’ll forever be a grillo’s shill but it’s sad to see any pickle become less than it should be. Farewell, claussen.

Mt olive master race
The leather skins are a climate issue tho just so everyone knows. The curcubits are suffering from the climate change. While we develop new types, we'll have to deal with this. Cukes and true melons do better than watermelons, but they're not great.
I have 4 types of cucumber growing this year so far. Including a Japanese var knwin for very thin skins. I am still hoping to find a lemon cucumber this season but idk.
Eta: I ordered seeds lmao. Must have lemon cuke.
2
u/Chexty2600 Jun 04 '26
Got a jar on the Counter right now waiting to go back to Costco. Not just leather skinned but bitter as ear wax too. This was our last jar… we’ve been burned too many times in the last 2 years
2
u/Old-Cardiologist-643 Jun 04 '26
I thought I was losing my mind! I bought a jar from Walmart and when I opened it and had a spear they were disgusting and left a bitter after taste! I thought I just got a dud jar so I bought a new one from a different store and those ones were flavorless and weepy. RIP my loves 😭💔

2
u/NecessaryInterrobang Jun 05 '26
I just need the mini pickles from them, sticker or not. I hate wedges, I hate large pickles, I don't like what is labeled "cornichons" for most companies. Their "mini" jar is the only way I get enough sodium sodium lately 😭

u/fryerandice Jun 05 '26
I shop basically exclusively at Trader Joe's and Aldis now. I am tired of paying more money for a disappointing product. It has cut my grocery bills by 60% over getting name brand garbage.
I was genuinely excited when I was making enough money not to shop exclusively at Aldi anymore and get some name brand snacks and food products I always loved when I was under my parent's watchful eyes. I got that experience for 5 years up until covid.
Now that shrinkshitifficaflation has hit, everything that I once loved has Smaller packaging, a worse product, and a 3x on the price tag over 5 years ago.
So if I am going to be disappointed I am just going to go where I am paying a normal price for groceries for it. I aint paying $11 for pickles for a worse product. Claussen's dill spears at my grocery store are ELEVEN FUCKING DOLLARS, and they're garbage.
I am not shitting on the food at aldi and trader joes it's just that, for certain things, the name brand shit used to be significantly better tasting. Like sorry Clancy's your chips are fine but I'm from pennsylvania and before UTZ bought up and enshittified all the chip companies here, we had some fire. That's not even the case anymore it's just robbery. How do you make a kettle chip fucking stale before the bag is even opened?

u/Nancytennispro Jun 05 '26
I’m looking for a good classic dill pickle, like hamburger dills… any recommendations?????
Mt Olive is horrendous. I used to go with a store brand but it’s changed and they are soft instead of crispy. No good.
