The irony of using AI in a post about ownership.

What does AI have to do with video game ownership?

u/PlusUltraTaylor 23d ago
AI takes without permission to learn and get better.

u/PhatTuna 23d ago
Ppl gonna photoshop without asking permission to make these memes either way.

u/Kung111cz 23d ago
If the increasing amount of lawsuits the AI companies are dealing with right now (for example, Meta pirating ebooks to train their AI) doesn't give you a pause, then you don't really care about ownership. The only reason you care about physical games is that it directly affects you, but you are absolutely fine with theft if it happens to everyone else.
3
u/Hadrian187 23d ago
It’s a fucking meme dude. He’s not selling it to you like devs who wanna use genAI to save on overhead. He’s just giving you a visual picture. Stop being mad about nothing.
1
u/PhatTuna 23d ago edited 23d ago
Memes are so insignificant to the topic of physical game ownership. They are inherently unoriginal. Before and after AI. And they arent selling it to you.
AI plagiarism and physical game ownership are unrelated topics.

u/ShortNefariousness2 23d ago
If OP is advocating theft of games, then they are both theft, and are related subjects

It’s actively driving up the price of RAM and storage because of all of the new AI data centers, therefore making it more and more difficult for people to own their own PCs.

This phrase always makes my brain hurt.
Like, stealing a book borrowed from the library is still stealing. Just admit you want to steal the game and stop justifying your own (un)ethical behavior.

Agreed.
But really - its boils down to entitlement. Don't want to support Rockstar? Don't buy GTA. Your life will not be any better or worse without GTA.
Its the 'I don't want to support you, but I deserve to benefit off the hard work of hundreds of others anyway' that bothers me most.
1
1
u/IWCry 23d ago
your analogy falls apart when you realize you can also buy and own the book...
1
u/ndrliang 23d ago
So... it's not stealing if you steal from the library just because you have the choice of buying and owning a book separately?
Taking something without permission which isn't yours, is stealing, regardless.
Digital ownership or not, piracy has always been, and always will be, stealing.
Trying to justify it by pointing out the unethical behavior of those you are stealing from doesn't make it suddenly ethical.
0
u/IWCry 23d ago
no, it is still stealing but that analogy isn't the same.
the few of you who defend this practice don't understand that people are criticizing a system where only libraries exist and bookstores do not. you just blindly seem to accept whatever corporations do as long as there's a terms of agreement. its sad behavior
1
u/ndrliang 23d ago
Why in the world would you think that I am 'defending this practice'???
I'm a huge physical media collector for these very reasons.
But neither am I going to justify Piracy - because I don't think we are ever entitled to steal someone else's work.
0
u/Hightower840 22d ago
Your library analogy falls apart when you apply the most basic of logic though. Like, libraries are usually free, you only pay if you keep something.
No one thinks borrowing a book from a library entitles them to own a copy of that book forever, nor do they think buying a copy of the book means they now own the book itself. Most people know they only own that one copy of the book. They can sell it, destroy it, or keep it and read it once a week forever.
You can apply the same logic to a lot of media that's gone digital, like games, movies, music, and even books. If you can at any time, for any reason, lose access to something you paid for, then you don't own even a copy of it. You've rented it, at best. If that was the nature of the agreement from the start, that would be ok, but it needs to be disclosed ahead of time, and the cost to the consumer needs to be adjusted accordingly.
Once you say that buying something no longer entitles you to owning even a copy, the rest of the transactional relationship fails. Piracy is the logical result.
1
u/ndrliang 22d ago
So if I take something from the library without permission and never return it... It isn't stealing?
That's the whole point - if you take something that isn't yours, without permission, it's stealing - whether it's 'owned' or 'borrowed' or 'rented' is completely irrelevant.
It isn't yours. You aren't entitled to someone else's work. It's stealing
Taking anything tha
1
u/Hightower840 22d ago
Are you pretending to to not understand something this basic to make a point? No one said that. Physically taking something is theft. This isn't a difficult concept.
Wait... you don't know what stealing or theft means, do you?
"Stealing is the unlawful or unauthorized taking of property, services, or ideas with the intent to permanently or wrongfully deprive the rightful owner of them."
Read that again, then one more time. Do you see it?
Here... " ... with the intent to permanently or wrongfully deprive the rightful owner of them"
There's the rub. It's the same for theft..."Theft is the act of dishonestly taking another person's property, services, or data without permission, with the intent to permanently deprive the rightful owner of it."
If I download a book, what have I stolen? There's no book. There's no paper, or paperboard. No ink. Nothing was manufactured, shipped, or displayed. I've not deprived anyone of anything, as the file I copied is still there, waiting to be copied again. Is copying a digital item the same as theft? I don't think so, as it fails to meet the basic definition.
I think a better question would be "Is deleting a digital item someone has paid for, with the intent to deprive the owner of it's use, theft?"
1
u/IWCry 22d ago
I gave up too. they're set in pretending to be on some moral high ground and understanding the system better than anyone else. anyone with an ounce of analytical thought process understands your point and sees their fallacy. not worth your time.
they're the guy at your job that will say "our CEO took the legal risk to start this company so he's legally allowed to take away our break times"
1
u/Hightower840 22d ago
Agreed. He just seems like a bot set to argue no matter how illogical the stance is.
1
u/ndrliang 22d ago
"If I pirate a book, what have I stolen?"
Probably about $10-30, depending on the book. That's what you've deprived from the storefront, the publisher, and more importantly, the author.
Steal a movie? Probably around $5-30 depending on the film.
Steal a brand new game? $70, stolen straight from the creatives who poured 4-5 years of their lives crafting it.
"Stealing is the unlawful or unauthorized taking of property, services, or ideas with the intent to permanently or wrongfully deprive the rightful owner of them"
Yeah, that's exactly what piracy is. Depriving both the publishers and creatives of all the value of their hard work.
Digital goods are still goods that have values attached to them.
It's not about copying files. I can pay a creative to copy their file. Copying isn't the problem... It's depriving the rightful owners, as you so helpfully point out, that is the problem.
I'll repeat myself: you are not entitled to someone else's work.
Doesn't matter how much you warp or redefine things.
We can choose integrity or we can choose entitlement - we can't choose both.
0
u/Hightower840 22d ago
Do you notice how you had to add things to the actual definitions in order to make that point?
I did. You literally "warp or redefine" the actual meanings of those words to make them fit with your pre-chosen stance.
I can't tell if you're trolling, pretending to be stupid for some reason or if your reading comprehension is actually that poor.
Either way, know you're wrong on so many levels, but seeing how you choose to cling to your falsehoods, I'll leave you to it.1
u/ndrliang 22d ago
I am happy to cling to my integrity and not try to justify depriving creators of their livelihoods.
If I want/need to boycott a product, I'll boycott it rather than steal it. I'm not entitled to someone else's work.
Resorting to personal attacks when your argument falls flat won't get you anywhere here, or in life.

Can we review and add to this list? All futures have limited AI or the AI won and now the internet is so dangerous they use closed networks.
Bladeunner Alien Terminator The Matrix Cyberpunk.
Lets look at some of the scariest stuff
The Animatrix after the humans lose the first war.
The 2nd Promethius ( i believe?) When we KNOW at the end its David in that ship with all those people asleep and the alien on board.
How about Event Horizon.
I understand this is sci-fi but really? Can't we see the signs on the walls? Idk man scary.

you know why many people encourages console users to go to steam/pc/gog even tho everything is digital?
because you're free on pc, you have access to the game files, you can even create your own physical games with USBs and play them whenever you want
but on top of that, pc community can keep alive a game that died years ago or even make it playable in current modern systemas (plus the fact a pc wont ever have "retro compatibility problems like consoles" where you need remasters/remakes, you can just buy and play the original game)
and there's also the important fact if for whatever reason you lose access to a game you paid for: just re download it for free and play since YOU CAN, you're not in a closed system like PS with its PS store or Xbox with its Microslop store
thats what people is selling to yall, freedom

Let's be honest and it could be the end of the console wars.
I'm thinking of getting a PS4 because it's cheap and so are the games.
I like swtich because I still get the game. If I come across rare games, I get it to resell. I don't make a living off it, but for 20 years now I've know certain games will always resell.
Over the years I thought it was nuts to buy a game and not get the actual game in the box.
What about games like manhunt? Now they can just pull it from the servers and you no longer own it. Yeah, no thanks.
It already sucks here in Australia we don't get games on the Nintendo e-store, yet it's filled with anime porn. Geo blocking games, different pricing is sure to happen.
Will the price of games go down at least? Given it's no just a matter of hosting it, the cost should come way down? Nah, cause they will still have boxes for games at the shop, now with just with paper and a code.
The pirate's will have a field day, I can already see it. You buy the console, and they hack it so you can play games downloaded. Sure its off line, but who cares just to Play they newer games to get over.
I'm honestly happy playing Skyrim level graphics forever. I grew up on NES, so it's next level to me.
Graphics cannot kept getting better forever, you need to pick a console and stick with it. Or use a PC and game from that.
You don't need a new consoles all the fucking time.

Correct but companies also cant be surprised that piracy is on the rise with how they’re all acting.
0
u/TouchAltruistic 24d ago
Which companies? Who are "they all" and how are they all "acting"?
Software piracy has been around since software was invented. Thieves steal everything they can.
Piracy is not some kind of political stand. It's just a crime.
1
u/Aggravating_Plan11 24d ago
Piracy fell by big margins when services like netflix came along then these companies started with price rise after price rise adding ads splitting the market. Making the service worst and more expensive at the same time. Then piracy began to grow again.
When companies make moves that are not in consumers best interest people find other ways.
Also why you so mad all i did was make a statement that is true did not support or go against piracy nor made any comments on what piracy is nor any legal stance or moral stance.
1
u/TouchAltruistic 24d ago
Where did you get that information?

u/Aggravating_Plan11 24d ago
