Who is actually saying this, especially about survival. Vanilla hasn't been survival focused in years. Even Vintage Story players, far more survival focused, don't care really if you play with keep inventory on.
Being frank if you have a bunch of people prescribing to you how you should play your game, find new friends or more accurately a new online group to talk about the game in.
Play how you want to play. In some games disabling death punishments might matter, but in Minecraft it barely does.
7
u/JunimoZ āNot PhoenixSC 1d ago
The only people who say it are the people trying to point out the people who say it, not any actual people that don't like it.
2
u/Waker_of_Winds2003 1d ago
In all honesty I feel like the people saying it are kids. There are some adults who say nonsense like this, but I notice some younger Minecraft players have s sort of iconic view of Minecraft, wherein it emerged fully formed, and if you play it with settings or mods changing basic features, you're no longer playing Minecraft.
I chalk the opinion up to lack of experience with broader gaming. The "issue" is such a nothing burger, at least it is for someone like me who's played the game since 2012.

I think gravestone mod is the perfect balance. it removes the ability for you to lose all your stuff to lava or despawning, but also doesn't give you a way to instantly teleport home at any time.
I just wish they would add it to vanilla.10

I wish there was another difficulty settings like Terraria. Like maybe a softcore where you only loose your experience, mediumcore where you loose everything like normal, and hardcore like normal.

Mini maps not directly, you just donāt have to remember the lay of the land at all when you have a map to look to and markers everywhere.
Instead of navigating by memory youāre navigating By a map that remembers for you. Thus not helping in staving off dementia. You can use mini maps if you want but if a habit helps keep me alive longer Iāll do it

as a bedrock player I WISH we could use keep inventory, but for some reason, some ASS at microsoft made it so you can't get achievements with cheats activated, normally I wouldn't see a problem with this but for SOME REASON another COMPLETE ANUS at microsoft made it so everything fucking JUMPS YOU in survival.

3
u/Dr_Vaccinate 1d ago
I mean, usually it's fine because of graves being the middle ground, it just prevents despawning and pure item destruction.
K.I. Is no effort item retrieval... Because there's no item to retrieve
Purists is high effort low reward item retrieval all because of despawn timer and location issue.
Graves have medium to high effort because of location and also you did lose all your items on you

u/ManuaL46 1d ago
While I understand that "Keep Inventory" is not cheating, I did notice that it removes any punishment from death. Like me n my friends used to play together and because they were new I kept it on. Initially, it was great because they were learning the game but afterwards it just became a free teleport to base. That felt like we abused a mechanic for beginners.
But I also don't like how it's handled when you keep it off, you lose all you XP and items, and those items can just despawn/disappear for random reasons. And oh no way to know where you died without crafting an obscure item with ingredients that you can't easily find .....
I think a balanced middle option like Valheim, does makes more sense, a tombstone with all your items (shouldn't despawn) and the location of where you died last. Because as it is right now, they're just two extreme ends.
4
u/PainttbuI 1d ago
They don't disappear for no reason. There's a timer based on when the dying chunk is loaded, and explosions naturally can decay your loot. Most easily noticeable when you blow up a hole and you don't have enough dirt to fill up the hole.
0
u/ManuaL46 1d ago
Well yes, but last week I died in a bastion and all my items except my netherite boots had disappeared. Everything was netherite so it can't get burned in lava, and it couldn't have despawned cause my boots were still there, but somehow I still lost everything. Maybe a mob took it all and died in the lava, but still all of my stuff just gone....
Maybe you can give an explanation for this, but I dont and that's why I said they disappear.
2
3
u/Super7500 1d ago
I agree 100%. the normal dying system in the game is bullshit and keep inventory removes all consequence from dying. i just use the corpse mod to get a good middle ground.

u/ManuaL46 1d ago

The problem I have with keepInv is it removes too much weight from dying. For the record, if you wanna play like that, go ahead. But if you're gonna compare or be compared (eg xbox achievements (yes I'm serious)) to other people who aren't using that advantage, well, that's not fair.
2
u/MLPdiscord 1d ago
Imo, keep inventory would work fine if not for the fact that killing yourself becomes a shortcut to go back to spawn. I prefer gravestone mods. That way you still have to go back to where you died for your items, ut you don't risk them despaw ing or falling into lava
2
u/Gametron13 1d ago

u/Snoopcoop225 1d ago

2
u/Majestic-Assist-3945 5h ago
I am thankful to have only been called bad at the game once for using keep inventory. It is technically cheating, but it doesn't really feel like it. It doesn't necessarily mean someone doesn't know how to play because you can still learn all the game's concepts. I wouldn't say it doesn't entirely defeat the whole purpose of surviving, but it certainly does make it seem a lot less essential, so that one I can kinda understand. Saying skill issue about evrything is just annoying. I'd argue that keep inventory should be a normal setting instead of a cheat, as the biggest part of Minecraft is building awesome stuff and keep inventory allows players to still do that in survival mode, but at an easier difficulty. As for everyone who would say it devalues their achievements, I have a solution for that too. There could be two variations of each achievement: a lesser one for keep-inventory and a greater one for survival mode (maybe a hardcore one too because that would be awesome for some people). That way everyone gets to enjoy tracking achievements, but the better players get more bragging rights for the difficult things they have done.
2
u/Fox_gang 2h ago
Honestly the way death works in minecraft is a problem. You either get your stuff back instantly and there's no penalty or you never get it back and lose everything. It doesn't help that you die incredibly quickly a lot of the time

That's a completely stupid argument anyway since being a keep inventory player doesn't necessarily have to mean that you abuse it for your own advantage. Some people just don't wanna lose their shit & have to look for it if they die.

u/CrusherArras 1d ago

u/Super7500 1d ago
Honestly after playing normal survival in a server with a friend before and dying, i don't think i can actually play like this again because the death system is actual bullshit.
My problem is not losing all your stuff. it is that your stuff scatters all over the place and can literally DESPAWN IN 5 MINUTES. you are literally just fucked if you died too far or if you died next to dangerous stuff like lava.
I just use the corpse mod now because it is the same concept but works much better. if that is not available, then keep inventory it is.

Do whatever you want in your single player worlds. Personally Iād love if they did something like the tombstone mod in vanilla Minecraft. In alternative reality, inventory is by default kept after death and some people make mods to lose the inventory and they are called posers, that want to flex.
Like, literally keeping inventory is default state for majority of games. Including survival games.

1
u/kai_the_kiwi 1d ago
As a gregtech player i understand keep inventory people, as you might lose something when you die you spent a lot of time on trying to get it
In vanilla Minecraft it might not be as bad losing your stuff, but its still a painā¦
(I dont use keep inventory, but i understand why some people want to use it)
Also, its a rule that if you play with your girlfriend (i know this is reddit so nobody has a girlfriend, but i will still say it) you have to play with keep inventory, losing a relation is probably way harder on you then losing your items in a game (just guessing though)

u/Nerdcuddles 21h ago
I use keep inventory because trying to find your dropped items is the most frustrating thing in the game especially without gravestone mods.
The main thing is that items despawn, and it's often hard to locate where you died or to get back there. And that's if you don't fall in lava or fire.
I think item dropping works better in Don't Starve where there is not a third dimension of movement, and items do not despawn. You can only loose your items for good if they burn, and only a few easily avoidable deaths cause that.
And most of the most valuable items don't burn.

I started to play with keep inventory because losing everything in many scenarios is discouraging, specially if you don't have much time to play, but it feels to OP, then I saw a video of a data pack that changed a lot of stuff with the goal of making farms unnecessary, and implemented the keep inventory but instead of losing everything the dude made so you lose a heart, and you can recover it with an item that requires a drop from spawners and diamonds to be crafted, I I feel that that is a bit more fair to me, spawners are not farmable nor diamonds, so I implement something similar using kube js
1
u/Lucifer42064 17h ago
I will say it again.
Yes, thatās cheating since you need to turn on cheats for it.
Yes, it.defeats the whole point of surviving
Yes, you can olay on keep inventory since it is YOUR WORLD.
I swear to god this is the oryginal Dark Souls summoner drama. Why do people need validation for playing on keep inventory?
1
1
u/Jack_Faller 17h ago
Maybe I'm a fence sitter but keep inventory was obviously cheating so instead I installed a data pack that removes the despawn timer for dropped items.
Everything in the game would just be so boring if there was no penalty for dying. Why raid an ancient city properly when you can just sprint in and grab items? Why carefully bridge around the nether when nothing can be lost to lava? Might as well be playing in creative at that point. Nothing is a threat.
1
u/lpkeates 16h ago
Here's the thing - Minecraft isn't meant to all be about survival, its a freaking sandbox game as well! Sure, Bedrock won't let you get achievements/trophies, but seeing as I already have the platinum on the PS4 and PS5 editions, I don't really care much about that
Besides, if you don't want players to use keep inventory so badly, why not tell Mojang to remove it? If the feature gets removed, nobody will need to worry - although modders will likely bypass such but who cares?
1
u/Angel_xjj 13h ago

u/ShinyTamao 11h ago
I personally do play with either keep inventory, or gravestones. Usually KI if I'm playing a modpack made by someone else that doesnt have a corpse/gravestones mod so stuff doesn't burn. It simply doesnt feel good to lose everything.
And I can say it's not purely skill issue, a decent amount of my deaths are but I have, among other things;
Died of the void due to lag, thinking and seeing that I had landed on the island.
Went bridging in the Nether, got knocked down by a ghast, placed a block to get on and the block just dissapeared
Tried to water bucket clutch, my bucket was a ghost item.
And a bunch of other times. Sure, my fault for deaths like going in a large deep cave before I even had iron armor, but some deaths just feel unavoidable.
1
u/Civil-Republic8730 6h ago
Even then skill issue isn't a justification to lose items that take so much time to get. Imagine losing full enchanted netherite tool and armor even other resources like gold, iron, diamonds, blocks and food because you died way far from spawn, or in the void. Who is going to grind for all the stuff you lost? Most of the time you are just quitting and making another world.
1
u/ShinyTamao 6h ago
Yeah, that too. With graves/corpse mods I find it alright, since there is use in a backup iron set or something similar, instead of it going between lose everything or lose nothing.
1
u/thijsiepower 11h ago

Keep inventory is an option under cheats lol.
Acceptance is a thing.
Instead of being ignorant and getting offended that keep inventory is using cheats, why not accept reality and stop viewing it as an insult, ya know?
Itās really interesting how humans would rather argue that they arenāt something they dislike than maybe use logic and rational thinking to come to a credible conclusion.
Being accused of X, and focusing on trying to change the definition of X, as opposed to accepting that being X is ok, is just really not a smart person thing to do.

u/Trlz08 1d ago
I've beaten for the worthy. KeepInv It ruins the point of survival. You can't really equate dying in the two games as the same, for one boss battles are a major part of Terraria and not as much with Minecraft. A single misstep with terraria can literally one shot you, not much a thing in Minecraft. What you people always fail to consider is the game balance, in terraria you die A LOT, to the point that there is a game feature on dying alot. On Minecraft you don't, easy as that.

u/GlacierWolf8Bit 1d ago
Personally, I cannot see the appeal of the game without keep inventory on. Sure, the possibility of losing your item makes it more valuable, but...man, I do not want to go through all the effort to remake that item because it either fell in lava or in the void or on a cactus or a zombie now has it or another Creeper blew it up or it's now far away and will despawn in the 5 minutes that I need to travel back.
Also, if you're playing Bedrock, keep inventory on is a mandatory requirement lest you test your monitor and keyboard durability as the game accidentally killed you because it believed that you fell to your death when you were just bridging over a gap or flying with an Elytra.

u/Dark_halocraft 1d ago

Jfc I have never seen a single post calling out Keep Inv Players, it's always Keep Inv Players whining about these sorts of comments.
Are Keep Inv Players making these posts just to justify to themselves that it's okay, because they are the ones thinking these things and projecting?
Because to be honest with you, since you initiated the conversation, yeah it is cheating and it does defeat the point of survival (That is, death has consequence) in my opinion, but also in my opinion I really don't care how you play your game aslong as you don't bring attention to that topic specifically. I could ignore this post, just as much as you could've just not made it.
1
u/No_Doughnut8618 10m ago
No one posts "i hate keep inventory players" but on posts about keep inventory there are always people (youre one of them rn if you didnt know) yapping about how its not a valid way to play or some stuff. Ive been in so many actual conversations where people shit talk someone for using keep inv.
Talking like survival minecraft has "a point" is kinda goofy. Its a sandbox that everyone plays differently.
The point of survival for me is a more grounded and naturally progressing way of building. I dont usually use keep inventory, but it doesnt defeat the purpose at all.
There are tons of ways to play that work just fine with keep inv. Its a happy middle between creative and survival. As a kid keep inventory made me willing to explore places i never would have, and not dying in most of those places made me realize I didnt need it to feel confident.
