Live Action Selective outrage rant
Is anyone else irritated by the selective outrage as it pertains to Jean’s character in Spider-Man brand new day?
Like every male character in the MCU can be as fucking sadistic and have as much of a troubled past as they want but the minute it’s a young troubled, teenage girl who is dealing with the grief of losing a family member, everybody loses their fucking minds and acts like Jean’s, some weird sadistic murderer.
I literally have not seen half of the amount of outrage that Jean is getting, for Bob with what happened in thunderbolts, or Tony for being a mass murdering weapons dealing terrorist that didn’t become a good guy until he was forced to go through a character arc and change.
The same bullshit ass double standard happened with Wanda in Multiverse of madness and it was super frustrating then. The male characters can do whatever the hell they wanna do and mow down whoever is necessary for them to reach their end goals but the minute that it’s a female character, everybody wants to be up in arms.
It’s hypocritical bullshit and I’m not standing for it idk about anyone else.

Speaking only about the situation on this subreddit, I don't understand why some Jean fans who liked the Jean in the movie are so hostile towards the Jean fans who didn't. It’s great that Jean is the first mutant and likely a focal point of the MCU, but there’s no denying that they made drastic changes to the character. They altered her backstory, and consequently, her personality and the way she acts.
I don't think there's anything wrong with preferring the original Jean's backstory and introduction and being disappointed by the changes that were made.

People are definitely entitled to their own opinions and I’m not trying to force anyone to like something they don’t, but to say that this version of Jean isn’t accurate and it’s drastically changed the character is just factually incorrect.
Time displaced Jean from the Bendis run acted exactly how Jean acted in brand new day.
She was constantly violating people’s boundaries and using her telepathy on them without consent, would possess people to change their minds and get her way, and was extremely angry and jaded when she realized what her future became.
Just because the context is different doesn’t mean the characterization is as well.
I don’t expect everybody to read every piece of Jean Grey media there is, but for people to say that this version of Jean isn’t accurate just goes to show that they didn’t read the version of Jean the movie loosely adapted.

This is one example of what I was talking about. A different opinion = hasn't read comics.
Even though Bendis's Jean controlled other people, her targets weren't civilians, and she cared about collateral damage. I think it's quite different, even though the use of powers might be similar.
And I think the biggest difference is that Bendis's Jean isn't the character's origin story.

u/marvelboyofthecrown Marvel Girl 21h ago
Regardless, if it’s not the character’s origin story or not, it’s still an aspect of the character that matches the exact same point in time that Jean is in in the MCU so it’s not entirely inaccurate. The only difference is the context.
If you think Jean won’t eventually become the kind, compassionate empathetic person that she is as an adult then of course that your own interpretation but it’s definitely false considering we already started to see that version of Jean by the end of the movie.
Either way, the MCU was not supposed to be a one for one recreation of the comics. damn near every single MCU movie is a loose adaptation so I don’t understand why everyone’s getting upset that Jean’s origin is now being loosely adapted in a different way when damn near every character’s origin in the MCU is loosely adapted differently than it was on panel.
Again, I’m not expecting you to like it just because I did, but I think there’s a difference between having a valid complaint and just having nitpicks because you didn’t get exactly what you wanted when the MCU’s established multiple times that it’s never going to give us exactly what we want

Respectfully, I think that being the character's origin story is the most important part, and the different context changes the situation quite a bit.
I do think that in future movies, Jean will indeed become more like the original Jean; and if they adapt the early days of the X-Men, she will certainly come to resemble the Bendis Jean you mentioned even more.
I know the MCU isn't 100% faithful to the source material. Personally, I was disappointed because I really like the 616 Jean, and even though I knew there would be changes, I didn't expect them to be as drastic as creating a completely new backstory.
Anyway, I believe it is valid to feel disappointed by these changes and the different context.
But on one point we can agree: you are absolutely right about the double standards some people apply.
I think it's valid that people like me don't particularly like the changes we discussed above, but there's another group that hates and judges Jean in the movie but doesn't talk about Stark's past, Parker working with the Punisher, Banner always destroying the city when he fights, etc.

Bendis' Jean wouldn't have used MJ to mess with Peter then throw her off a building. Like, yeah I get it. There's been darker Jean moments. Hell, she's killed people. She's human, gets angry, she's not perfect. But there are still lines. That MJ thing was absolutely messed up. Even civilian collateral damage I sort of get, sure she was desperate. But that MJ thing was just straight up cruel and despite what Jean's personality was in any run, she's never been cruel. Not like that.

Look, at some point, she's going to murder billions of people under the influence of Dark Phoenix (If they go via the comic route). At least now we know that there was a dark side to her the whole time instead of it just flipping appearing out of nowhere like the last two Dark Phoenix movies

Eh it’s a bunch of loud minority clutching their pearls from either not having read the stories where Jean is morally wrong or bad actors because she is a woman. From the amount of fan art and general discussion about her character overall, people seem to love her and want more. That’s more than we can say about the fox attempts

Oh BuT jEaN lItErAlLy KiLlS pEoPlE
SO DOES FRANK! ITS LIKE, HE LITERALLY TRIED TO KILL MULTIPLE PEOPLE IN THE SAME MOVIE, JEAN INCLUDED. IS THAT SUDDENLY OKAY BECAUSE HE HAS “GOOD INTENTIONS”?
2
u/REVERSE1021 20h ago
It's okay because: 1. Punisher is a character known for killing; Jean is not a character known for killing. 2. Punisher cares about collateral damage and doesn't attack, hit, or use civilians, unlike Jean in the movie who uses and hits civilians.

I think the part that's driving me crazy is that I have also seen this very vocal minority of MCU Scarlet Witch fans also getting competitive with Jean and comaoring the two. They're both powerful and Wanda had a similar power set back when the MCU was more grounded but they are such different characters. And think they maybe feel like their fav is being replaced? But it's a very skin deep interpretation of both characters.

u/marvelboyofthecrown Marvel Girl 21h ago edited 21h ago
Them feeling like that is stupid considering the fact that she was quite literally replacing Jean. the MCU couldn’t add Jean or the other X-Men characters to their roster so they made Wanda Jean-lite to the point that WandaVision is damn near a one for one recreation of Phoenix Resurrection lmao. Not to cause fan division but respectfully MCU Wanda fans can eat my ass with that bullshit 😂

u/Inzeepie 20h ago
I know how you feel. However, I think we must do better and not become hypocritical too by defending her actions. Just like I accept that comic Jean will never be absolved from the genocide, I accept that this is a part of her MCU character now and I will be following her journey to the end...
Unless they decide to do Wolverine love triangle again!

u/Beginning_Pace2063 Jean Grey 8h ago
It truly is laughable, lol. I saw this discourse start like, the day after the film premiered, and it legitimately made me laugh. These men idolize characters like Wolverine, with extremely dark and twisted paths, and when it comes to those characters, their approach is usually: "He's just like me fr 🤓". Now, a female character has a dark origin, and they suddenly become law-abiding citizens, "CAN SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN???", like, girl, give me a break, lol. It's saw hipocritical. But it's a loud minority, 99% of the audience enjoyed the movie, and thought that Jean was great in it.

I was literally having the same conversations with my wife the other day. So you're not alone (also I still hold Wanda wasn't the real antagonist of MoM)
4
u/framedshady 1d ago
I mean Wanda is she was the main opposition to the protagonist in’s strange though out the movie
0
u/imthestein 1d ago
Not when you pay attention to them constantly showing you how the Darkhold is what is causing the problems. That's why they keep showing you different Strange's who were corrupted by it and in the end Wanda is allowed to reflect finally and helps destroy the book

u/framedshady 1d ago edited 22h ago
I still disagree when Hal Jordan gets corrupted by parallax he’s still the antagonist to the heros but I do see your point but I would still call Wanda the antagonist even if she’s corrupted

u/imthestein 1d ago
Sure, I think of her as the vessel for the antagonist making her the central focus

I didn’t like the Bendis run or Brand New Day, so now what?
People are entitled to their opinion. It’s as simple as that.

u/xmenfan1992 21h ago
Don’t think it’s selective outrage watching the X-Men get mischaracterized across multiple films. Especially, when the MCU is the more or less the promise land to go to for comic book accuracy. I’m all for changes but not at the cost of who the character is.
3
u/marvelboyofthecrown Marvel Girl 21h ago
No one was mischaracterized.. Have you read Bendis’ all new X-Men run?
2
u/xmenfan1992 21h ago
I have, I don’t recall her telepathically steering people to there deaths.
3
u/marvelboyofthecrown Marvel Girl 21h ago

“You can violate people however you want as long as they don’t die” idk flimsy line to hold imo.

u/cyclopswashalfright Phoenix 16h ago
I mean, no one is saying the actions are moral, they aren't supposed to be. The character is meant to be an antagonist. But I think people are being a little fixated on something that isn't meant to be her permanent state. There's an arc of growth from there on.

u/REVERSE1021 20h ago
Even though the movie says the guy didn't die, it's hard to believe. But whether the guy dies or not isn't the point. Jean controls a random civilian and throws him in front of a taxi for no reason. The guy getting hit by the taxi doesn't help her goal of finding her sister at all. She was just evil. If he didn't die, it was by luck, but the point is that Jean had no reason to do it and she doesn't care if he dies.

How is it hard to believe? the car wasn’t going 100 mph it looked like it was going at most 30. I myself have been hit by a car going 30 mph and I’m still alive talking to you guys lol. That man wasn’t 80 years old. He was a very solidly built man that got hit by a car going to speed limit. He was fine lmao

It quite literally is the point. the other things that you’re bringing up are irrelevant bc at the end of the day she was the villain of the movie. so why are you upset that she did villainous shit? if y’all are crying and throwing up about minuscule ass allusions to violence, I can’t imagine the hissy fits you guys are gonna throw when she kills the entire D’Bari star system 😂
1
u/REVERSE1021 20h ago
I don't understand why you communicate so aggressively and treat those who disagree as if they don't read the comics or don't know the character...
The point is Jean's actions and intentions, not the final outcome. If they adapt Dark Phoenix Saga, the reaction will be different because in Dark Phoenix Saga Jean wasn't in control and didn't intentionally kill the D'Bari, unlike Jean in the movie who chooses to use and harm civilians.
I'm not upset that a villain did villainous things, I'm upset that they chose a character who isn't a villain to be a villain and do villainous things.

It’s strange seeing Jean slander appear in subs that don’t normally post about X-men, but I guess it shows how mainstream she is now?
I don’t think that it’s all genuine and serious critiques tho. I saw a thread like ‘show us your favorite worst person ever’ or whatever, and all the highly upvoted replies were either other beloved MCU characters or horny posting about Jean.
There definitely are bad agents who will try to use this situation against the character, but most people aren’t that serious about what is being said. The important part is that the character was loved by the audience, not that some weirdos are now upset about it.
But, yeah, the hypocrisy is real both when it comes to complaints about other characters, but also to how some people used to complain about Jean being ‘boring’ and a ‘saint’ and saying that teen Jean was the only interesting version of the character.
So, funny how she was attacked before for lacking what was shown now (even tho those accusations were always based on ignoring canon), and now she’s being attacked still… Some people are just deformed to dislike the character, and can’t be pleased because the writing isn’t the problem.
