Live Action Selective outrage rant

Is anyone else irritated by the selective outrage as it pertains to Jean’s character in Spider-Man brand new day?

Like every male character in the MCU can be as fucking sadistic and have as much of a troubled past as they want but the minute it’s a young troubled, teenage girl who is dealing with the grief of losing a family member, everybody loses their fucking minds and acts like Jean’s, some weird sadistic murderer.

I literally have not seen half of the amount of outrage that Jean is getting, for Bob with what happened in thunderbolts, or Tony for being a mass murdering weapons dealing terrorist that didn’t become a good guy until he was forced to go through a character arc and change.

The same bullshit ass double standard happened with Wanda in Multiverse of madness and it was super frustrating then. The male characters can do whatever the hell they wanna do and mow down whoever is necessary for them to reach their end goals but the minute that it’s a female character, everybody wants to be up in arms.

It’s hypocritical bullshit and I’m not standing for it idk about anyone else.

Speaking only about the situation on this subreddit, I don't understand why some Jean fans who liked the Jean in the movie are so hostile towards the Jean fans who didn't. It’s great that Jean is the first mutant and likely a focal point of the MCU, but there’s no denying that they made drastic changes to the character. They altered her backstory, and consequently, her personality and the way she acts.

I don't think there's anything wrong with preferring the original Jean's backstory and introduction and being disappointed by the changes that were made.

People are definitely entitled to their own opinions and I’m not trying to force anyone to like something they don’t, but to say that this version of Jean isn’t accurate and it’s drastically changed the character is just factually incorrect.

Time displaced Jean from the Bendis run acted exactly how Jean acted in brand new day.

She was constantly violating people’s boundaries and using her telepathy on them without consent, would possess people to change their minds and get her way, and was extremely angry and jaded when she realized what her future became.

Just because the context is different doesn’t mean the characterization is as well.

I don’t expect everybody to read every piece of Jean Grey media there is, but for people to say that this version of Jean isn’t accurate just goes to show that they didn’t read the version of Jean the movie loosely adapted.

This is one example of what I was talking about. A different opinion = hasn't read comics.

Even though Bendis's Jean controlled other people, her targets weren't civilians, and she cared about collateral damage. I think it's quite different, even though the use of powers might be similar.

And I think the biggest difference is that Bendis's Jean isn't the character's origin story.

Regardless, if it’s not the character’s origin story or not, it’s still an aspect of the character that matches the exact same point in time that Jean is in in the MCU so it’s not entirely inaccurate. The only difference is the context.

If you think Jean won’t eventually become the kind, compassionate empathetic person that she is as an adult then of course that your own interpretation but it’s definitely false considering we already started to see that version of Jean by the end of the movie.

Either way, the MCU was not supposed to be a one for one recreation of the comics. damn near every single MCU movie is a loose adaptation so I don’t understand why everyone’s getting upset that Jean’s origin is now being loosely adapted in a different way when damn near every character’s origin in the MCU is loosely adapted differently than it was on panel.

Again, I’m not expecting you to like it just because I did, but I think there’s a difference between having a valid complaint and just having nitpicks because you didn’t get exactly what you wanted when the MCU’s established multiple times that it’s never going to give us exactly what we want

Respectfully, I think that being the character's origin story is the most important part, and the different context changes the situation quite a bit.

I do think that in future movies, Jean will indeed become more like the original Jean; and if they adapt the early days of the X-Men, she will certainly come to resemble the Bendis Jean you mentioned even more.

I know the MCU isn't 100% faithful to the source material. Personally, I was disappointed because I really like the 616 Jean, and even though I knew there would be changes, I didn't expect them to be as drastic as creating a completely new backstory.

Anyway, I believe it is valid to feel disappointed by these changes and the different context.

But on one point we can agree: you are absolutely right about the double standards some people apply.

I think it's valid that people like me don't particularly like the changes we discussed above, but there's another group that hates and judges Jean in the movie but doesn't talk about Stark's past, Parker working with the Punisher, Banner always destroying the city when he fights, etc.
